Since the audio version of Basilisk Station failed me, lol, I was nearly without anything to listen to at work. Almost a situation to cause panic!

I finally decided on Still Life with Crows by Preston & Child. So far, it's hitting the spot marvelously!

I'm glad to hear it, Jason!

I am now (also) reading The Twelfth Imam. Actually starts out by allowing me to relive the late '70s hostage crisis. Once we got passed that it slows way down and spends a lot of time introing the characters (including some teen romance angst, I hate teen romance angst). Maybe a quarter or third of the way in now and it seems we may have finally gotten to the meat of the book. I hope.

Mike-LOL

I started a review of the book, and suddenly WHOOSH... no idea where it went. So, back to the drawing board... yeesh.

White Heat by M.J. McGrath
M. J. McGrath takes readers to the coldest, northernmost inhabited location on the planet: Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic, where winter temperatures regularly plummet to –50C, and the sun remains absent 24 hours a day a full four months of the year. This is a story of survival in extreme with a touch of murder. Great characters. Highly recommended, if you don't want to buy it than try your luck on new york journal of books giveaway. Okay, I'm going to give that pesky review on Event another try. If it blows up again... I'm going to ... well, not sure what I'm going to do, but I won't be happy.

I just finished Skinwalker. It's UF, but it has some pretty nasty fight scenes, so I would consider it AAA-worthy. :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 2933 comments Mod
The problem here is that I have thousands of books waiting and every third book I see I think, "Hum, have to look into that".

Jason, same with me. Event has a lot...less than enthusiastic reviews, in fact it seems most of them. Now having read what Hugh has to say I'm considering it.

and like I said, the average score is 3.57 stars. If that means there have to be more 4 and 5 star ratings than 1 or 2s. Go a few pages in and they pick up. THere are over 400 raters so that's a pretty stable average.

Don't mind me, I'm just trying to point out there are others who liked it so I can stay one step ahead of the mob if you guys don't like it.

I know. When you like a book it's hard to see people dis it and you want to give new readers a clear picture.

message 67: by Traci (new)

Traci I'm trying to get into Legend. Just not getting into it. But the reviews are positive for it so I don't want to give up. Atleast waiting until the seige starts before I decide.

You are wise beyond your years Mike... like Yoda, except taller.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 2933 comments Mod
And talking backwards, I'm not.... err, I mean, oh well.

Traci, I love that book, Legend. I realize going in it may not be for everyone, we can't all have the same tastes. But as noted I really like that one, it's on my favorites list I believe. How far in are you?

message 70: by Jason, Gone but not forgotton (new)

Actually, for all we know, Mike is Yoda! Other than the talking backwards thing, he certainly is wise enough indeed! :)

Almost a third. I like it a little better now that the book has introduced and is following Druss. I like Rek and Virae as characters but the instant-ness of their great love for each other was a bit jarring. I'm sticking with it I think.

Btw I've always been more partial to the wisdom of Obi-Wan.

btw I loved The Pawn.

Traci, my wife reads that In Death series. She loves them and always tries to get me to read them. I plan to someday, but I have to be in the mood and it's I have so many books of my own to read. lol

I hope you enjoy them as much as she does! :)

Traci, the action parts are good. It's more suspenseful, but I thought the mystery part was very good. I liked Eve a lot. Rourke ain't shabby either!

I have to admit being a big fan of the "In Death" books. I can't remember now which one I picked up first, but it was in mid-series. I enjoyed it enough I went back and started with the first book and plowed my way through all of the series written at the time (several years ago). I have the whole series and re-read every so often when I get tired of trying a whole load of new-to-me books from the library that I can't get into at all. They are just simply tremendous fun!

message 81: by Traci (new)

Traci I like the futuristic part. It's not too much. Just enough to be realistic. And there's some gadgets I want.

message 82: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 449 comments I absolutely love Eve's ongoing battle with her cop cars ... and when Roarke finally has one made to order and after all her resistance she's absolutely awestruck because it is UGLY and utilitarian instead of one of his fancy high $ vehicles.

I know just how she feels ... I looked all over WY, MT and CO to find the plain-Jane black Dodge diesel 3/4 ton stick shift crew cab 4 x 4 pickup ... when all the dealerships wanted to sell me a CITY TRUCK!

Alexander Draganov (darthsparhawk) I just finished "Excavation" by James Rollins. Awesome novel. I have reviewed it in the site.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 2933 comments Mod
Got a couple of Vince Flynn books I haven't read... Like the Mitch Rapp books.

message 86: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 449 comments Finished my first James Rollins book, The Last Oracle. I knew it wasn't the first book in the series but didn't realize there was so much 'back story' involved and that the story continues from this 'ending'.

I liked the writing the the characters but I have to admit I have a personal prejudice against a series of books that kind of don't have a beginning or end. Too much like soap operas, I guess.

I can deal fine with two types of series, a trilogy, or even more, 4 or 5 books, but you know that at the end of "X" number of books you're going to have the whole story. I also deal fine with a series where the characters remain mostly the same but each book is a separate story.

Library has the first of this series and I've put it on hold, so will try it from the beginning and see if it works better for me that way.

Sharon, I think you'll like it. I just read The Devil Colony (Sigma Force #7) by James Rollins and I think he's getting ready to wind the series up. It's a fun read. I started with the "Last Oracle, and read them in a shuffled order. Reading them in order would have been a lot better.

message 88: by Traci (new)

Traci Took a break on Naked Death and will be finishing that today. And then on to Best Served Cold. Wish there were a way to read quicker or easier to read multiple books at the same time. Lol.

message 89: by Alexander (new)

Alexander Draganov (darthsparhawk) I'm reading the latest Shannara novel. Interesting book, but could have been better. In my opinion Terry Brooks needs a break.

I'm just about to finish Ice Station... so, how does one miss an entire submarin with his magnetic grapling hook?

message 94: by Richard (new)

Richard Hugh (The other Hugh) wrote: "I'm just about to finish Ice Station... so, how does one miss an entire submarin with his magnetic grapling hook?"

I know what you mean. Those books do make me stop every now and then to tut and shake my head.

message 95: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 449 comments Maybe I'm overly critical, but things like that end up completely bumping me out of a story, especially if it's something I'm particularly aware of. I'm sure there are things in "city" books that urban people shake their head at ... with me it's usually horse or dog or 'outdoor' things. But once I'm bumped out of a story with something like that, it's like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop and many times I simply have to give up on the book.

I have finished Ice Station (review coming) it's a fun read. It reminded me more of Clive Cussler without the Barbie-Doll characters (which is a good thing with or without the BD-Cs). It goes in the like collumn. Thank you gang. Lining up my next reads now.

message 98: by Alice (new)

Alice (nationofcrumb) | 297 comments I just started Stranger in a Strange Land. I don't get the feeling it's going to have a lot of action like Starship Troopers, but I do enjoy a good Heinlein.

message 99: by Traci (new)

Traci Started Best Served Cold sort of a realism fantasy. Recommend it to anyone though who likes Dirty Dozen type of action. Good.

I will be starting Joe Abercrombie sometime soon. I've heard lots of good things. I haven't read any Heinlen. I need to read more Sci-Fi.
