One thing’s for sure—I’ve never identified so much with a character until this book.

Here are some of my favorite lines from the book and how I perceive them.

“I just need to know that someone out there listens and understands and doesn’t try to sleep with people even if they could have. I need to know that these people exist.”

At the first part of the book, we see a character struggling with the first days of high school. He just lost one of his closest friends, Michael, to suicide, and now he doesn’t really know what to do. So he’s here, writing a letter to someone who he believes will listen.

“Sam screamed this really fun scream, and there it was. Downtown. Lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder. Sam sat down and started laughing. Patrick started laughing. I started laughing.
And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.”

By the end of the first part, we see Charlie describing his drive with Sam and Patrick. It must have felt great to be with the right people at the right time. Sometimes all you need to feel infinite is a simple midnight drive under a tunnel with the perfect music chosen for the best people. I’ve never had that sense of emotions before, but Charlie really did capture such a moment.

“It was an old 45 record that had the Beatles’ song “Something.” I used to listen to it all the time when I was little and thinking about grown-up things. I would go to my bedroom window and stare at my reflection in the glass and the trees behind it and just listen to the song for hours. I decided then that when I met someone I thought was as beautiful as the song, I should give it to that person. And I didn’t mean beautiful on the outside. I meant beautiful in all ways.”

What I really appreciated with this book is that it also had very interesting songs, the best books from the classics, and fascinating movies. When I read these lines, I was really touched, because Charlie was so pure in a way that he was giving this record—one of the greatest love songs—to someone who he really adored.

“I wish I could report that it’s getting better, but unfortunately it isn’t. ”

I wish I could get right inside the book and hug my dear Charlie and say that things are going to be all right soon, but unfortunately I can’t. There will always be times that we will mess up big time and we won’t even understand how to fix the mess that we made. That was his feelings, and reading about it made my heart really ache. Not only because of the fact that I’m sad for Charlie and all that he’s been through, but also the ugly truth that these emotions really does happen in real life.

Maybe that’s why I like this book so much. It’s a great book about self-discovery and deep thinking. He speaks like he’s in my generation, talking about my struggles as a teenager.

“So, if this does end up being my last letter, please believe that things are good with me, and even when they’re not, they will be soon enough.
And I will believe the same about you.”

What a satisfying and comforting prologue for such a soft-spoken but special character. ...more "
