"A relic from a time the Soviet Union wasn't just presented as a unified 'Great Satan', where the debased gutterscrapings of anti-communist wasn't propped up as legit history (think Pipes, robert service, Black Book) and something like the USSR could be treated with a degree of fairness, even sympathy, as complex and multifaceted, deserving of proper analysis. Basically: lenin was right on almost everything." Jul 02, 2025 12:03PM

Artists do not have to be blinded or burned to be silenced; their suppression can be as simple as creating or maintaining economic precariousness and allowing books to fade away.

T.S. Eliot
“What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust. ”
T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land and Other Poems

William Shakespeare
“Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp’d towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.”
William Shakespeare, The Tempest

F. Scott Fitzgerald
“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Edgar Allan Poe
“I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.”
Edgar Allan Poe

Friedrich Nietzsche
“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”
Friedrich Nietzsche
