Short Story 58

There was white-out conditions in the town; subsequently, the roads were impassable. Sitting in the small lobby of the town’s only inn Hector watched as the external white flurry moved against the thick windowpane. It was impossible to see more than an inch distance and what was perceivable was a vacant patch with no interest.

Sighing, he glanced at the magazine he had been pretending to read for the past three hours. There was nothing to do. Phone reception was terrible, it was only...

Short Story 57

There was knocking on the window that led out onto the old fire escape, frantic knocking. Gravity ran to it throwing back the curtains. Maxum looked back at her from the darkness directing her to let him in, something she did without hesitation.

“Why are you here? Is something wrong?”

“Yes, it is,” Without pause he climbed in casting off his coat, “Where is he?”

“In his room, he said he was tired. What’s happening?”

“I’m not sure yet.”

The room was dark when t...

Short Story 56

He needed thirteen stitches. The seam across his cheek was a raw reminder of the knife that had nearly run it through. The victim ran his tongue against the opposite side smiling at the man gathering his things on the warehouse floor.

“Is that it?”

He looked up at him blank-faced, “What were you expecting?”

“I don’t know. I thought by now you doctors would have learned to do something showier.”

“You talk so much, do you have no pain receptors?”

“Oh no, it actu...

Short Story 55

He wondered if it could be called a beach if there was no sand. You couldn’t make a sandcastle and if you tried to make a ‘pebblecastle’ it would all fall apart into a pebble mountain or maybe a hill. The water was cold here and because of the channels in the rocks the waves water was wetting the hem of the towel. Not that the towel could do much good for anyone, no one was planning on swimming on an overcast day like this one and every stone could be felt through its bristly hairs.

T...

Short Story 54

What Goes Up Must Come Down

Have you ever felt cheated by a story. You’ve begun it, you dedicated time to reading it, and then it ends flat or not at all. It’s like a ball being thrown in the air and never coming down. You could stand there for an eternity and never have the pleasure of catching it. There are other things that are like that. Poorly made movies, a half-cleaned bed, unfinished lunches... Or falling down the stairs.

That was the strange thing that happened when Mr. Wiggi...

Short Story 53

I don’t know why he bought instant coffee when there was a free espresso machine around the corner, which was constantly stocked. But, that was just Guy’s habit, I guess. Maybe, he liked the flavor more. Who could really say? I suppose I could ask him why he did that, but that would be way more involvement than I ever intended to put into his life.

Guy took a seat across from me, stirring his bland cup of black instant coffee without saying a word. On the television the news was playi...

Short Story 52

“The itsy-bitsy spider crawled up the waterspout.” The soft sound of shoes against a cement surface, “Down came the rain and washed the spider out.” They stopped, the dark room coated in a film of silence, “Oh there you are.”

“You weren’t supposed to find me so easily.”

“Wasn’t I? Well, you should have hid better if that was the case. Now come out, it’s time to finish our game.”

He crawled out from under the fringe of the bench dusting off his clothes with a rather hosti...

Short Story 51

The bug was having an excellent day until he hit the windshield. The smear left was terrible, evidence of the tragedy. The two had collided at high-speed going in opposite directions. It was a blessing that the impact had killed the poor thing immediately. The wiper blades were ignited to remove the evidence of what had happened, but all it did was make the situation rather worse. Windshield wiper fluid was engaged, but there was none loaded in the reservoir to extrude, which meant the winds...

Short Story 50

“I went to the dentist the other day and he let me pick a prize out of the prize box.” Her eyes shown as she related the story, “They said I had the best teeth they had seen in years.”

“I know, I was there.”

“But he let me take something out of the prize box.”

“Did he?”

“Yes. And I’ve never been so happy about something in my life.”

“I can tell.”

Helen hadn’t stopped smiling since yesterday. Arguably her teeth seemed whiter even though she had only gone i...

Short Story 49

“Please sit down.”

There was a chair, covered in red brocade with lavender throw pillows, it was here that he sat. He couldn’t see the person talking, they were behind a wall made to look like a Japanese shoji screen, their ambiguous shape all to suggest their existence. There was no room for him on the chair with all the pillows.

“Feel free to move them if they’re in the way.”

“Can you see me?”

“Of course, all appointments are recorded, I’m watching from a screen on...
