Short Story 38

There's The Door

The hand sanitizer was actually clear glue or at least so it appeared. No one seemed to notice or care, even when their hands were fixed in place against each other they just walked looking unnaturally pleased with everything. It was a wonder that this wasn’t a problem. It could be that the glue gradually gave up its natural desire to hold things tightly together. Or it could have been that this particular set of office workers got as much done with their hands moving as the...

Short Story 37

Her Two Faces

She looked into the mirror and saw another person. It was that face, her face. The one she had created and manufactured. This was a different person from herself. Everything about her. What she ate, what she wore. This was not a person. It was an image. Something unreal, an opaque shield she had developed to manipulate and deceive. It had worked. How it had worked. It was amazing how many people flocked to her and idolized the unreal.

Taking a facial swab she dampened it ...

Short Story 36

An Unwanted Acquaintance

What’s your favorite game to play?

Is that such a strange question to ask when you first meet someone?

Or maybe you think it’s childish?

I just love playing games though.

How about this, why don’t we play a game together?

I think that would be a perfectly lovely idea, don’t you?

Let’s say hide-and-seek.

You hide.

I seek.

But I do hate counting in minutes.

How about we go for days.

And how about I look for you only for a certain period of time.

Let’s say I sea...

Short Story 35

Shot in the Dark

Have you ever noticed when you spit toothpaste into the sink and the water begins to drag it away, it resists, pulled apart in white threads down the basin and then out of sight? It is interesting the things people are aware of and even more the things they aren’t.

“What are you trying to suggest?” His stern long face revealed nothing, the question sagging from his thick lower lips. He was the sort of person where every word came from his lower lip, sagging off of it f...

Short Story 34

Sentimentality

I made myself a peanut butter sandwich as I didn’t want to subsist on veggie crackers. It was easy for my sister she wasn’t a picky eater, except for the whole save the universe by ignoring her canines and extended small intestines. I wasn’t a big fan of the brand of peanut butter and jelly she bought, but they were far tastier than those cardboard fake grains filled with starch. This of course, was my rather unpopular and unwelcome opinion. I didn’t share it much anymore unle...

Short Story 33

Just My Luck

I could hang out with her. Being a conscientious person this was an offer I did not make. There are people in life that a pleasant afternoon could be spent with little to no inconvenience. The one in question was not one of those people. She was rather a tyrant when it came to time, and also had strong expectations of other people, this also included rather low expectations or rather effort from herself. It was not her fault, she was in position of a rather low EQ score, which di...

Short Story 32

Repaying a Debt

Every store around her seemed to have retail space for lease, but was it really that surprising in this economy. She hated to admit it and yet she couldn’t deny that it was more of a shock that she had managed to stay open during the closures. Maybe it was because they sold food or maybe it was because her grandparents had established the place over sixty years ago.

Even so, business wasn’t doing quite as hot without more businesses to attract people, and with the cost...

Short Story 31

Reset

Mary realized if her calculator had a history it would be more embarrassing than her computer browser history. Though in truth the two put together would make the other make more sense, it was none the less incredibly difficult to admit, with clearly displayed facts what a failure she was. The old saying, ‘numbers don’t lie,’ ran through her head on a never-ending circuit.

It was fine, she could figure something out. She just had to imagine a way to pay down her credit cards, tha...

Short Story 30

Still Small Voice

Poison ivy grew through the fence they said was impenetrable. It was one of those anomalies no one understood or really tried to understand. There was a general lack of knowledge about when the wall was built or how it came to be, and now this thriving lifeform that managed to penetrate the unknown was an homage to the structure’s existence, a highlight against something perfectly inanimate.

A woman stands before this wall while others walk past. Her eyes are fixed a...

Short Story 29

Errand

The banana was completely brown, even the inside. Staring at it, there was no doubt that even banana bread would have protested having this used in the recipe, let alone a person being given it to consume. It was a wonder there was no mold on the external flesh. All of this didn’t seem to bother the man who held it, he was handsome, beautiful even, so it was quite a surprise when with a large swinging motion, he took a bite.

“So, what exactly do you want?”

Raina strained t...
