Short Story 14

Momo

I’ve had plenty of relationships that seemed like they’d work on paper, but in practice, they were a bad idea. Not just dating either, normal relationships. Friends. Animals. Nothing seemed to work out. That was just life I suppose.

Instead of bothering myself with attempting to create these connections which had grown an unattractive air I spent most of my spare time reading. An archaic performance most chose to ignore or generally replace with television, internet videos, and ...

Short Story 13

The A Political Mind

There aren’t enough towels in the world to stop the sewage flowing from his mouth. But the pathos of the words rang true and as was the practice the crowd applauded as soon as the speaker had finished. He would go on record for having communicated his rather robust options at a rate of fourteen words for every one breath and a marked improvement in blinking which now proceeded every twenty-fourth word. It would later be said that nothing quite so metaphoric and transfor...

Short Story 12

Another Day At The Office

Honestly, I didn’t care much for the first season, so I didn’t bother with the second. Amazingly this fact did not reach other people and they, like the wonderful people that they were, would not shut up about it. I couldn’t understand their compulsion and they just ridiculed me for not seeing it through. I had no idea how to respond to this level of stupidity. Why would I force myself through something when what I was looking for was entertainment. These were prob...

Short Story 11

Cry Wolf

A pendulum swings, a heavy metal ornament at the end of an invisible line, moving back and forth with the motion. The call of an owl. Steady, cool, lifeless, darkness spreads out. The only light is coming from the metal ornament all glittering polished brass.

“Shandra, are you paying attention?”

The woman shook her head calling herself back it seemed from another world. The sun was out, the scent of fresh bread, coffee, and pastry emanated from the café where she a...

Short Story 10

Present and Future

A man who looked like an older version of him appeared in a flash. Rex froze, eyes fused to him. Time felt like it stood completely still as they took measure of each other and then in a similar flash the older man was gone. Blinking several times, he challenged the thought and then his own sanity. Crossing the street on the next light, he went to the small alley where he had seen the man standing. Though it was possible he had cut down one of those further back, there ...

Short Story 9

A Strange Offer

“The Majority of banks are introducing this system.” The smile that stretched across her face was elastic.

“That’s great, but I think for now I’ll pass. I just want to open an average checking account.” This was my first time in a bank by myself. My mom was supposed to come with me, but something came, and she couldn’t make it.

“Are you sure? This is an opportunity of a lifetime.”

The woman before me was a photocopy of a 1950’s stewardess. Her black hair pr...

Short Story 8

Playing Possum

A boy sat in a sycamore tree staring down at the roots. He seemed to have no proclivity toward his position and generally possessed no physical attributes of distress or interest for how he came to be so high up. The sycamore tree was quite old and grew by itself at the top of a hill in the center of a wide valley. About two miles from this location there was a town more rural in nature and this town was the type to always have a level of cloud cover.

Not many people c...

Short Story 7

On The Bright Side

She was a firm believer in the power of McDonald’s chicken nuggets to fix all problems. But somehow today they just weren’t cutting it. Even with sweet and sour sauce the delicious compressed chicken was not fixing it. The cure all that had helped her since she was four had fallen flat. Nora took a sip of her Dr. Pepper wondering what had gone wrong.

It had all started that morning when she came in late for work, it hadn’t been her fault really, the elevator was ...

Short Story 6

Chance Encounter

Everyone was busy, so I went to the movie alone. There was nothing particularly special to see. Just an old noir in its perfect black and white. I took a seat far from everyone else, sitting toward the center to have the best view. I wasn’t really a movie buff, but it filled time I wasn’t sure what to do with. Most people thought I really loved black and white pictures. It wasn’t that, not that they were bad, or I hated them, they just always played inexpensively during odd ...

Short Story 5

A Lot On Ones Plate

Malinda Blare was a housewife. She married shortly after high school at the age of nineteen to her husband Nelson who had been twenty-two at the time. They proceeded over the span of nine years to have five children. She had both lost and gained a series of pounds and now retained a comfortable form that was resistant, contrary to some people’s beliefs, to go back to the slender form of her youth. She spent much of her day balancing the family finances, answering the pho...
