Short Story 28

All she wanted was the answer, but she had no idea how much she would hate it. Body cold, she stood before the window looking out through a lustrous fog that had played itself across the glass. There was snow falling, but within she knew it wouldn’t stick, it never did these days. The wind pushed and pulled against it in a drowsy manner, the world outside was silent.
In the back of the house there was movement. It was calm, but its pattern drew on her nerves straining th...

Short Story 27

She was constantly looking for a new job. It was a habit she had when she was unhappy. One of the easiest things to change. People didn’t understand, but she didn’t ask their opinions, she didn’t see how it much mattered if the only person who was inconvenienced by it was herself. Her general portfolio of careers was far more robust than most, and she was notorious for never having a job longer than sixteen months at any given point. This didn’t have much of an effect on her living...

Short Story 26

How long did it take?
How long was it supposed to take?
Not long.
It took longer than that.
I see.
Is that a bad thing?
I suppose, however, I can’t guarantee that that will not be held against you
when under review.
So, then it’s a bad thing?
Possibly.
I see.
But you will have the ability to submit documentation in support of yourself.
Well, that’s good.
Though that is rarely taken into consideration.
That’s bad.
Well only because it is a general waste of time, but m...

Fool's Gold

“What do you see?”
There was light everywhere so blinding nothing could be perceived through it, “Light.”
“Light?”
“Yes.”
“And nothing else?”
The light began to melt away and there was… grass, yellowing grass. “Grass.”
“Go on, I want you to try and see beyond the light. See beyond the grass.”
The light gave way to a wide-open sky of dark blue that stretched out like an ever-flowing ocean. Mountains highlighted the distant sky, texturing...

The Sudden Death of Mr. Brake

He was a slow-moving man. That was just one of those things about Mr. Brake that most people found oddly charming, so when he died rather quickly it came as quite a surprise to all those who knew him. The funeral was a simple thing, and oddly enough there were a lot of people there, though none of them could say they knew him well enough to do so. It was more that they were curious to see if anyone else did. Everyone was disappointed to see that no one had any ...

The Gray Face of Luck

The jeweler mounted a big pearl in the brooch. Its size was near too great for the setting, but with some finagling it managed to remain in position. There was something about it glittering there surrounded by all that silver and clear cubic zirconia that brought out the creamy glow of the opulent pearl.
Pulling a handkerchief from a trouser pocket the jeweler dabbed at his face. There was some concern that he should have used real diamonds, but that would have ...

Ticket

The train leaves in ten minutes. She held the ticket firm in her grasp looking out at those populating the station. There were only two trains, both were quite large though one was filling at a far faster rate than the other. The apparently more popular of the two was luxury in appearance. The external hull was waxed black of unearthly depth, with a long maroon strip of rich red flowing across its length. Beside this was its more archaic rival. A pale white with a golden trim.
