Inspiration for Cloud Whispers
The daughter she gave away. The family she always wanted. The journey to redefine her fate….
I was inspired to write Cloud Whispers after experiencing a devastating motorcycle accident. One beautiful June afternoon, my husband and I were riding our motorcycle when a car appeared out of nowhere, barreling toward us. With a steady stream of traffic on all sides, there was nowhere to go to avoid collision. Panic assailed me as the car smashed into our motorcycle. My husband maneuvered the bike to avoid a T-bone hit, undoubtedly saving our lives. Even so, my right foot and leg sustained major injuries.
After every storm, there’s a rainbow. While recovering from the accident, I received ongoing bursts of story inspiration. Over the next several months, the plot for Cloud Whispers sprang to life.
After surviving this motorcycle accident and a house fire during the same time span, I transformed my life by examining old patterns, expectations, and beliefs and learned to tap into my intuition and creative abilities. This quest led me to study energy healing and become a Reiki Master. I also studied at the renowned Chopra Center, earning certification as a Primordial Sound Meditation instructor.
In Cloud Whispers, Katie Callahan is burdened with a long-held secret. When a twist of fate brings a second chance at motherhood, she knows the time has come to reveal the truth to her husband. She’s caught between joy and fear of her husband’s rejection of another man’s child. On the cusp of admitting the events of her past, she experiences a near-fatal motorcycle accident.
With her body trapped in a coma, Katie finds herself in the dreamlike space between Earth and the afterlife. Guided by her spirit guides and the soul of her beloved dog, she learns the life-changing power of intention and self-transformation. From her ethereal vantage-point, she watches as her loved ones work together to resolve long-held contentions and to connect the pieces of their broken hearts. Katie's only chance to transform her world means completing an impossible journey back to life. Back on Earth, her newfound knowledge must transcend time and space to help Katie achieve her greatest wish of all.
Cloud Whispers is a mind-expanding women’s fiction novel with a strong spiritual message. If you like headstrong heroines, heartwarming stories of family and forgiveness, and new age concepts, then you’ll love this empowering tale.

Spiritual Themes in Cloud Whispers
My goal as an author is to write fictional stories that not only entertain but also inspire and captivate by incorporating thought-provoking concepts. While my novels include plenty of conflict and family drama, in the end, you’ll always find a happy ending! My philosophy aligns with this quote from Jim Henson: “Life’s like a movie; write your own ending, keep believing, keep pretending...”
In my work-in-progress novel, Nora’s Promise, spiritual themes include the power of now and animal telepathy & compassion. In Cloud Whispers, the overarching theme relates to the Law of Attraction, however, other new-age topics are included as well. Below are some Cloud Whispers Book Club questions for your thought-provoking pleasure!
Cloud Whispers Reading Group Guide Excerpt:
• Do you think Katie was in the clouds in an alternate dimension or was it all in her head?
• Bear telepathically communicated with Katie, and she and Pan had a particularly close relationship. Do you think dogs, cats, and other animals, are more intuitive than humans?
• Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not?
• Some people believe that dream consciousness is every bit as real as waking consciousness but it takes place in a different dimension. What do you think?
• There is a growing field of energy healing that includes services similar to those offered by Simone. Do you believe in this healing modality? Why or why not?
• An overhead cloud whispers to Katie, “The power to manifest your desires comes from within.” Do you believe in this power? Why or why not?
A full list of Reading Group Guide questions can be found at the end of Cloud Whispers and on my website at: my link text.

New Release—Nora’s Promise (FREE on Kindle thru 10/11)
I’m thrilled to announce the release of my new novel,
NORA's PROMISE: She trusts animals more than men. He runs through women like tires. Can one orphaned boy force them to change gears?
Kindle promotion – free today through 10/11. Tap link for your free copy: https://amzn.to/2zV8p12
With her sister’s death, Nora’s life changed in an instant. Forced to raise her orphaned nephew, the animal rescuer doesn’t expect to be dumped and fired by her kid-hating boyfriend/boss. After her own close call and a message from beyond, Nora introduces the little boy to his handsome, fast-living absentee father.
Davey Johnson is a hot-shot NASCAR driver who never wanted to be slowed down by fatherhood. But when he finds out he has a nine-year-old son, he vows to be a better father than his old man. When his first efforts fail in a big way, he enlists Nora’s parenting help. But what starts as a chore transforms into something way hotter than a final lap.
When Davey’s sponsors clash with Nora’s vegan ways, he’s forced to choose between his passion for racing and his love of Nora. Will they be able to blend their lives or will their romance run right off the track?
Please enjoy the below excerpts from Nora’s Promise:
Excerpt 1:
Five minutes later, Davey arrived. He quickly spotted her, but spent the next little while signing napkins, papers, and a ball cap as he made his way toward her. With each interruption, Nora’s jaw clenched. By the time he slid into the seat across from her, she was simmering with irritation.
“Glad you could finally make it,” she said, her voice heavy with sarcasm.
He raised a single brow and nodded at her mug. “Haven’t had enough caffeine this morning?”
When Davey turned to look for the waitress, she shot over faster than Nora could blink.
Nora rolled her eyes while Davey laid on the charm. She had to admit he was good-looking. That is if you liked the sun-kissed blond, blue-eyed, tall, lean look. And apparently, the waitress did. As Davey signed her order pad, she hung on his every word. She told him that he’d had a great season and that she had cried after he’d wrecked in some race.
Cried? Seriously? It was a race, not a matter of life and death. Finally, she took Davey’s order for a cup of coffee. When she started to walk away, Davey touched her arm and the woman turned back. Her eyes sparkled and her face flushed as she glanced back and forth between Davey’s hand on her arm and his face. “Amber, could you also bring Nora—” he nodded in her direction “—another tea?” His lips ticked up into an obnoxious grin. “She seems to be a little short on caffeine this morning.”
After Amber pulled herself together and made her way toward the kitchen, Nora pinned a look on Davey. “It must be exhausting to be you.”
Excerpt 2:
He let out another low, sexy laugh. “Let’s see, where should I begin? You’re an amazing mother-figure to Ben. You’re kind and nurturing. You love animals and they love you.” She shifted on his lap, a little uncomfortable but at the same time completely flattered by his words. “Dogs are a great judge of character and Daisy adores you. You’re honest, fun, and you have a great sense of humor. But what I like best of all,” he said, gazing into her eyes, “is that you’re real.” He gave her a slow grin. “All that and you’re smokin’ hot too.”
Too stunned to speak, she gaped at him. He framed his hands around her face, leaned in, and brushed his lips over hers. Then he kissed her slowly, taking her on a soft, tender journey that reinforced every word he had just spoken. When he drew back, her insides were soft and gooey, her breasts were aching, and she was hot and moist between her legs.
“Tell me what you want, Nora,” he said. “If you don’t want this, say the word.”

New Age Themes in Nora's Promise
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
As an author, it’s my aspiration to write stories that not only entertain but also inspire. Given this, my novels include romance, conflict, and family drama as well as a sprinkling of new age, thought-provoking concepts.
One of the key themes in my work-in-progress novel, The Perfect Lap, is the notion that everyone’s doing the best they can from their current state of awareness. In my new contemporary romance, Nora’s Promise, new age topics included are animal compassion, kindness, and the power of now.
Below I’ve provided a selection of Nora’s Promise Book Club questions for your thought-provoking pleasure!
- Steph indicates that “Kindness is a choice.” Do you believe that practicing kindness is a choice? How can you implement this in your life?
- Steph turned to the Law of Attraction for help after she was diagnosed with cancer. Are you familiar with the Law of Attraction? What are your thoughts on this law?
- Nora’s grandfather tells her, “When you dwell in the past, you’re giving away your personal power to create what you want in this moment.” What do you think this means? Do you agree?
- Steph, and later Nora, practiced gratitude to ground themselves. They used a simple technique of closing their eyes and silently listing their gratitudes. Have you ever practiced gratitude—meditatively, journaling, or through another method? How did it make you feel?
- In order for Nora and Davey to make the changes necessary for their happily ever after they both had to grow spiritually. Nora had to learn to focus in the present moment and Davey needed to learn to trust the universe and align with his own values. Do you think spiritual growth is an important component in most relationships? Can you think of examples to support your position?

Everyone’s Doing The Best They Can
“Everyone’s doing their best at every moment based upon their current state of consciousness,” Dr. David Simon, The Ten Commitments
I was introduced to this concept while studying for my meditation certification at The Chopra Center. It resonated with me so deeply that I included the idea in one of my novels, The Perfect Lap.
In The Perfect Lap, AJ Ryan’s granddad teaches him that “everyone’s doing the best they can from where they are.” AJ listens, but he doesn’t understand what it means until he meets Clare, the mother of the children he’s co-fostering.
So what does this statement mean?
We’re all on our own unique paths in life. We got where we are through a series of experiences, beliefs, and choices. Because we’ve all had different life experiences, we’re all in different places along our path.
We evaluate situations through our lens of experiences, and it’s natural to judge others through this lens as well. The old adage, “Don’t judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes” is fitting. We all too often make judgments based on what we perceive on the surface. Another piece of wisdom I learned from Dr. Simon is that “everyone has a story.” Without knowing a person’s background, experiences and choices…without “walking a mile in their shoes,” it’s impossible to truly understand their story.
“The ability to observe without evaluating is the highest form of intelligence.”—Jiddu Krishnamurti
In The Perfect Lap, Clare appears to be a bad mother. She smokes, drinks, and leaves her young children home alone for days on end. Like everyone, Clare has a story. After AJ and Ella get to know her and learn her story, they realize she’s made the best choices she could based on the options available to her.
I won’t give away a spoiler, however, I will note that…compassion arises from understanding a person’s story.
“Everyone may not be good, but there’s always something good in everyone. Never judge anyone shortly because every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.” —Oscar Wilde

8 Spiritual Themes in The Perfect Lap
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
As an author it’s my desire to write stories that entertain and inspire. To this end, I’m blending traditional romance and women’s fiction with new age spirituality. My novels include plenty of romance, conflict, and family drama, along with new age concepts like the Law of Attraction and Focusing on the Now.
There are many thought-provoking themes in my newly released contemporary romance, The Perfect Lap, including:
- Non-judgment
- Everyone is doing the best they can from where they are
- Giving from a place of love
- Prioritizing joy
- Living in the now
- The difference of one
- Gratitude
- No such thing as perfection
Below I’ve included select questions from The Perfect Lap’s Reading Group Guide related to these themes to prompt further contemplation.
1. Non-judgment: Ella has a preconceived notion about the Piper kids’ mother before she meets Clare. After she gets to know Clare, she finds someone entirely different than what she had envisioned. Have you ever experienced this? What did you learn?
2. Everyone is doing the best they can from where they are: AJ’s grandfather taught him this concept. What do you think this means? Do you agree or disagree with this philosophy, and what supports your position?
3. Giving from a place of love: Cruz tells AJ that he needs to give from a place of love. Do you think the reason for giving makes a difference, or is it just the gift that matters? Please explain your position.
4. Prioritizing joy: AJ suggests that Ella make an important job decision based on what makes her happy. What do you think about this advice and why?
5. Living in the now: AJ’s granddad used to tell him to “stop fretting and live his life.” What do you think he meant by this?
6. The difference of one: Ella’s aunt taught her that one person can make a difference. Do you agree? Why or why not?
7. Gratitude: In the New Age Parenting class that Ella and AJ attend, they learn that giving gratitude shifts your energy from negative to positive. Do you believe this? If so, how does this work?
8. No such thing as Perfection:
a. AJ’s grandfather taught him that there’s no such thing as perfection; in racing this translated to no such thing as a perfect lap. What are your thoughts on perfection?
b. AJ taught Ella and the kids that you don’t need to be perfect to be successful, you need to consistently do your best. Do you agree? Why or why not?

Looking for a romance novel or a spiritual book—why not try a blend of both?
I love reading spiritual books that offer personal inspiration and transformation. The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire by Deepak Chopra, The Ten Commitments by David Simon, and Ask And It is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks are among my favorites.
While I enjoy these books, it takes me a while to finish reading them because I need to process the outlined ideas and ponder how I might integrate what I learned in my own life. Years ago, while contemplating this, an inspiration formed. I could write fictional stories about real characters with real issues and embed spiritual concepts to show how they might work in real-life situations.
These days, I'm doing just that! I’m blending traditional romance and women’s fiction with new age spirituality. In a recent guest blog post, Laurie Sander’s described my blended genre as follows:
I’m sure you’re all familiar with the inspirational romance category. Some of you probably read it and maybe even write it. I enjoy inspirational romance and count authors like Karen Witemeyer and Autumn Macarthur among my favorites. And have I blogged about Karen’s book The Short Straw Bride over here.
But what Sedona Hutton is doing is different from the inspirational romance that we know and love. Sedona is blazing new trails by blending traditional romance with new age spirituality. What’s emerging is a unique blend of romance and spirituality with themes like The Law of Attraction – being present – being in the now – that I’m really enjoying. The books are spiritually uplifting with fully developed romance plots and enough heat between the sheets to keep you turning the pages.

New Age Parenting: Use this technique to restore calm with your kids!
In my contemporary romance, The Perfect Lap, Ella and AJ unexpectedly join forces to co-foster three children and quickly learn they’re out of their league. They attend a New Age Parenting class, and one of the topics covered is the Law of Attraction.
Below is an excerpt:
“The first concept we’ll cover is energy vibration.” Adrian moved to the flip chart and wrote: Like Attracts Like. “Now, let’s talk about what this means.”
He walked through the basic concept of the Law of Attraction. According to Adrian, the earth was a spinning ball of vibration, and the thoughts and emotions you put out are what you receive back.
AJ scrunched his face in disbelief. It sounded like a bunch of what his granddad had called Class A Hooey. He stole a glance at Ella and was surprised to find her sitting on the edge of her seat and jotting notes in her phone.
Well, damn.
He returned his attention to Adrian and attempted to open his mind.
“For those of you who think this is a bunch of bunk,” Adrian said, making AJ squirm, “there’s scientific evidence to back up what gurus have known for centuries. I’m not going to get into the quantum physics this evening, but if you’re interested, Google it.”
AJ made a mental note to do just that.
Adrian moved back to the flipchart and tapped on the words Like Attracts Like. “Why is this important?”
“Most children learn based on the limitations that society teaches. But children who learn to direct their thoughts in a positive manner dream bigger and learn how to manifest their desires.” He made eye contact with each of the participants. “When you teach your kids about energy, you’re empowering them. When they understand energy and how to effectively use it, there’s less drama and fewer behavior issues because they’re able to self-direct.”
Less drama and fewer behavior issues. Now he was talking. If that was true, AJ was willing to give it a try.
“I’m going to call the Law of Attraction ‘LOA’ going forward.” Adrian flashed a grin as he spelled out the letters with his hands. “It’s impossible to talk about the LOA without also talking about the power of positive thinking.” He circled around the front of the classroom. “Everyone wants to be happy, right?”
Participants in the room nodded and a few people shouted, “Yes!”
“Those who are happy are putting out positive vibrations and getting positivity in return. Those who are sad, mad, frustrated, and so on are putting out those vibrations and getting similar vibrations in return. You can’t put out negative vibrations and expect to receive positive vibrations back.” Adrian leaned against the whiteboard in the front of the class. “So how do you stop the negative cycle?”
“Think positively,” Ella offered.
“That’s right.” Adrian smiled at Ella. “If the kids aren’t there, call a timeout.” He rocked back on his heels. “Not a sit-in-the-corner timeout, but something fun. Come up with a family word. Once it’s said, everyone takes a minute—or whatever time you agree on—to re-group, re-center, and check your energy vibrations.”
A young blonde—Sandi, maybe?—raised her hand. “I get the idea of the timeout, but then what? I can’t see my boys going from mad to happy just because we took a minute of silence.”
AJ was glad she’d asked the question because he’d been wondering the same thing.
“Great question, Sandi.” Adrian moved to the whiteboard and wrote, Energy Check and Gratitude. “The timeout isn’t a fix-all. It simply offers a pause so everyone can ground themselves. Afterward, you’ll need to provide a lesson or deploy another technique, like gratitude, which we’ll talk about in a few minutes. But,”—he drew out the word but as if to build anticipation—“after your family members become experts in energy, you may find that the timeout moment is all it takes because your children have learned how to redirect their own energy.”
Ella, AJ, and the kids chose the word ‘mistletoe’ for their timeout. The process worked just like Adrian described, and they all had fun with it, too!
“Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.” — Colin Powell
Why not try this process with your kids, grands, and nieces and nephews? The key is to stop negative energy before it boils over. Once negative energy reaches the boiling point, it takes a long time to resume calm. It’s like water…if you put the kettle on to make tea, when the temperature reaches 212 degrees, your water will boil. To avoid the boiling point with your kids, give this timeout technique a try!
“You can’t make positive choices for the rest of your life without an environment that makes those choices easy, natural, and enjoyable.”—Deepak Chopra

Pass on Perfection & Live a Happier Life
Aiming for perfection makes perfect sense for doctors performing surgery, engineers designing an airplane, and anyone working in life and death situations. For most of us, our day-to-day work doesn’t include those implications.
We strive for success in our respective pursuits but seeking perfection isn’t the best approach. Psychology Today calls perfectionism “a trait that makes life an endless report card on accomplishments or looks” and “a fast and enduring track to unhappiness.”
Perfectionists fear making a mistake might cause others to think poorly of them, get them fired, or any other plethora of negative outcomes. This obsession with perfection creates an unachievable standard and a toxic focus on failures.
Experts have found that perfectionists are made not born. It starts at an early age, and unfortunately, demand is on the rise. Parents are increasingly insisting on perfectionism from their children and seeking status from their kid’s performance.
In The Perfect Lap. Ella’s parents expect Ella to be perfect. Ella puts undue pressure on herself in an ongoing attempt to meet their expectations. That is, until she learns another way. Below is an excerpt from The Perfect Lap where AJ shares his views on perfectionism with Ella and the kids they are fostering:
“My granddad taught me there’s no such thing as a perfect lap. He always said that I should give every race my best attempt, and the rest of it would find a way.” AJ shifted his gaze between the kids and Ella, who looked every bit as enthralled as the kids. That pleased him because his granddad’s wisdom was for her as much as it was for the kids. In some ways, it was even more important for Ella.
“So, you won even though you didn’t have a perfect season?” Madison asked.
“Darlin’,” he drawled, making Madison blush, “last season was so far from perfect you can’t even imagine. I lost my ride in April—”
“Huh?” Zach scratched his head.
AJ chuckled. “I got fired from my race team.”
The kids were obviously shocked by his admission. Zach’s eyes popped, Madison sucked in a sharp breath, and Kayla’s mouth dropped open. Ella also looked surprised. Knowing Ella, she had thoroughly researched him and knew his history. Her surprise was likely associated with his admission of imperfection. But he wanted the kids and Ella to learn what he had learned—you don’t need to be perfect to be successful, you need to be persistent.
“Yep, I got fired. I sat out for two races before Davey asked me to join Team Johnson.” He smiled at the attentiveness he had from Madison, Kayla, Zach, and Ella. “Throughout the season, I led a lot of laps and I sucked in a lot of laps, too.”
The girls giggled.
“I did what my granddad taught me—I tried my best each and every lap. Sometimes I won. Sometimes I didn’t, but I still accumulated a lot of points. Other times, despite my best efforts, I didn’t do well at all.” He slid his gaze between the kids and Ella. “When that happened, I told myself it was okay, that I’d do better the next time.” He leaned in toward Zach.
“You know what? I always did.”
Let’s take a pointer from AJ and not buy into the pressure from society, our family, friends, and even ourselves. As Leo Tolstoy wrote in Anna Karenina, “If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.”
