Positive Thinking
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right!" - Henry Ford
I love this quote! It's a great reminder to think positively and to stay focused on our goals and dreams.
Happy Friday fellow readers and writers! I'm challenging myself to make it a positive thinking day....anyone want to join me?

The Law of Attraction in Cloud Whispers
These days most people have heard of the Law of Attraction, the concept that we attract actions and experiences into our lives through our thoughts and vibrations. The Law of Attraction is built on the belief that the universe and everything in it is vibratory.
Like attracts like. If you put out positive vibrations, you’ll attract positivity into your life. If your thoughts and actions are negative, that’s what you’ll receive in return.
Sounds easy…right?
But if this is true, then why don’t we have everything we want? This question is contemplated in my new novel, Cloud Whispers:
“I don’t understand,” Katie said, wiping cloud wisps from her arm. “If it’s that easy, how come we can’t think things into being on Earth?”
“The vibrational concept works the same way on Earth,” Posie said. “You can think things into being.”
“Then how come everyone doesn’t have everything they want on Earth?” she asked, still not getting it.
“Sometimes it takes longer on Earth,” Black Eagle acknowledged. “It requires a greater faith, but it still works. That is, if you can overcome the greatest obstacle down there,” he said, waving a hand toward the blue-green ball rotating beneath them.
Katie’s brows knitted together. “What’s the greatest obstacle?”
“The mind.” Black Eagle tapped his index and middle finger on his temple.
Now she was completely confused. Her guides had just explained that she could think things into being. If that was the case, how could her mind be the greatest obstacle?
“I’ll show you.” Black Eagle rubbed his hands together as his expression turned gleeful. “Chair,” he said, snapping his fingers together.
A chair appeared in front of him.
“I ask for it and it’s delivered. Now granted, the pure love and positivity up here result in quicker manifestation of desires, but on Earth humans could get things a lot faster if they didn’t over think everything.” Black Eagle’s lips curled into an impish grin. “You see, I just thought ‘chair.’ ‘I need a chair.’ I didn’t flip-flop, consider whether I deserved the chair, if I could afford the chair, or if a loveseat would really be better.” He glanced at his backside. “I didn’t wonder if this particular chair would make my butt look big.”
Katie snickered, thinking about the many times she’d wondered the same thing about a dress or a pair of jeans.
“I simply asked for a chair and got a chair. When you ask for something the universe begins its work to deliver that request to you. If you start questioning it, the universe hears, ‘I don’t know if I want this,’ ‘I might not really need this,’ or ‘I don’t deserve this,’ Black Eagle said. “You must be clear and consistent with your request and believe it will manifest. If you do so, you will receive. It’s universal law.”

My Ban on News
“I believe if you just go by the nightly news, your faith in all mankind would be the first thing you lose.”
I love this line from Luke Bryan’s recent hit song, “Most People Are Good.” There’s a lot of positivity in our world, yet the media chooses to spotlight doom and gloom.
Years ago, I had the honor of studying under the late Dr. David Simon, co-founder of The Chopra Center. One of the many things I learned from him was that everything we ingest affects our mind, body, and spirit.
Most of us are aware that the food we consume impacts our bodies, either positively or negatively. But have you ever thought about the influence of what you watch on television, read on social media, or hear in conversations from those around you?
I pondered Dr. Simon’s wisdom, especially when I turned on the nightly news. Watching murder and mayhem, political combat and corruption, wide-spread disease and natural disasters, made me feel dark, depressed, and hopeless. There’s so much goodness and kindness that occurs in our communities and our world, but according to the media, that’s not what sells.
As I aligned with my internal wisdom, I realized that listening to this negativity day in and day out clouded my vision of the world…so, I implemented a ban on news.
I’ve gotten a lot of grief over my stance. I’ve been called naïve and uncultured, ignorant and uninformed. But I’ve held steadfast because watching the news makes me feel ugly inside. I have no need to hear about the latest fight between the White House and Congress. I can manage just fine without listening to mud-slinging by the Democrats and Republicans. When disaster strikes and wars break out, I don’t need to hear every minute detail.
I’m not completely in the dark. I’m aware, on a macro level, of what’s going on in the world. When I surf the net or log onto Facebook, I see the day’s headlines. It keeps me connected enough to say a prayer and to send positive energy toward those in need. Afterward, I redirect my attention to something positive.
If there was a happy news channel, I would rethink my stance. Until then, I’ll keep feeding my soul through Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, and I’ll continue to choose peace and joy over destruction and devastation.

The Power of Thought
Have you ever woken up on the proverbial wrong side of the bed, grumbled and resisted, and found that over the course of the day things only got worse?
You’ve probably heard of the Power of Positive Thinking and the Law of Attraction. But did you know that quantum physicists have uncovered scientific evidence backing the power of thought?
Don’t believe me? Go ahead and GTS (Google That Stuff…or if you’re Irish like my hubby, ‘Google That S*@#!’) You’ll find countless books and articles that describe our material world as a vibration of energy. Our thoughts are one form of this energetic vibration.
Many fascinating studies have been conducted on this subject. In an experiment with athletes, one group was assigned to perform a physical activity, while a second group was assigned to visualize the activity. The results showed that the same neuro pathways were used in the brain in both groups. Even more surprising—the physical results between the group that actually did the activity and the group that only thought about the activity were similar.
Positive thoughts create positive vibrations. It really is as simple as Henry Ford once said: “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” Buddha said: “The mind is everything. What we think, we become.”
Positive thoughts create a positive life!

Holiday Unity
There is great religious and thought diversity in our country with nearly thirty different holidays celebrated between November 1 and January 15. Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanza, Diwali, Bodhi Day, Winter Solstice, and many others.
While the nightly news highlights the issues caused by this diversity, there is also much compassion and kindness shared between those with different beliefs. Food served to the homeless, an Angel Christmas tree, an encouraging word, a smile, a hug…people helping people across religion, race, nationality, sexual orientation and a multitude of other differences.
At our core, we’re all the same. We have the same basic desires—peace, love, joy, and compassion. Maybe even more important, we’re all connected. Genetic studies have shown that everyone on Earth is related to everyone else if we go back a few thousand years.
Namaste is an ancient Sanskrit greeting that means, “the Spirit in me connects with the Spirit in you.” What a beautiful way to greet others and to acknowledge and honor our connectedness!
What if we focused on this connection instead of our divisions? What if we looked for the good in others instead of fixating on our differences? Focusing on the positive creates peace within and in the collective consciousness. Imagine what our world would look like without judgment, without an ‘us’ versus ‘them’, without hate.
During this holiday season, let’s celebrate our unity. Let’s spread holiday cheer by practicing non-judgment, compassion, kindness, and acceptance. One by one, we can create peace within and be the change we want to see in the world.
Wishing each of you a Happy Holiday in whatever way you celebrate it and a New Year filled with peace, love, and connectedness.
Namaste!

The Secret of Shifting from Negative to Positive: A Proven Method to Transform a Bad Mood
This past week wasn’t my best. I had difficult choices to make, a loved one had a health scare, and nothing I did went as planned. After recent rains, my dog dug holes all over the yard and my beloved Preds lost last night’s game. The list goes on, but you get the idea.
I know all about the Law of Attraction and the Power of Positive Thinking. I blog on these topics…I write about them in my novels. But knowing and doing are two entirely different concepts. I believe with every fiber of my being that putting out negative energy creates more of the same. Even so, at times the material world offers adversities that pull me down. Knowing what negativity does makes it all the worse. Wallowing in pessimism is like asking the universe, “May I have some more crap, please?” And so it goes….
Earlier today on my morning walk with my digger, Milkduds, I noticed a small tree at the edge of the woods. Tiny Kelly-Green buds trailed up long branches that just yesterday were bare. Studying the beautiful tree and its overnight growth, an awareness emerged. Today is a brand-new day and a new opportunity to create enhanced life experiences.
I spent the rest of my walk drawing in the beauty of nature and giving gratitude, because being grateful is a sure-fire way to improve a bad mood! Even when things aren’t going my way, I have plenty to be grateful for.
Studies have shown that when one is feeling genuinely grateful, it’s impossible to at the same time feel angry, anxious, or any other negative emotion. For this reason, gratitude has been an important part of spiritual teachings throughout the ages. There’s an inspiring chapter on this powerful process in the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.
“What can you do right now to begin to turn your life around? The very first thing is to start making a list of things to be grateful for. This shifts your energy and starts to shift your thinking.”—Dr. Joe Vitale
We are continually creating our lives through our thoughts and our feelings. The Universe simply reflects our energy and returns to us what we put out. Considering this, I let go of the issues that plagued my week and shifted my thoughts toward the positives in my life. It didn’t take me from zero to one hundred, but I’m well on my way toward a happy day.
“Gratitude places you in the energy field of plentitude. Glow with gratitude and see how awe and joy will make their home in you.”—Michael Beckwith

New Age Parenting: Use this technique to restore calm with your kids!
In my contemporary romance, The Perfect Lap, Ella and AJ unexpectedly join forces to co-foster three children and quickly learn they’re out of their league. They attend a New Age Parenting class, and one of the topics covered is the Law of Attraction.
Below is an excerpt:
“The first concept we’ll cover is energy vibration.” Adrian moved to the flip chart and wrote: Like Attracts Like. “Now, let’s talk about what this means.”
He walked through the basic concept of the Law of Attraction. According to Adrian, the earth was a spinning ball of vibration, and the thoughts and emotions you put out are what you receive back.
AJ scrunched his face in disbelief. It sounded like a bunch of what his granddad had called Class A Hooey. He stole a glance at Ella and was surprised to find her sitting on the edge of her seat and jotting notes in her phone.
Well, damn.
He returned his attention to Adrian and attempted to open his mind.
“For those of you who think this is a bunch of bunk,” Adrian said, making AJ squirm, “there’s scientific evidence to back up what gurus have known for centuries. I’m not going to get into the quantum physics this evening, but if you’re interested, Google it.”
AJ made a mental note to do just that.
Adrian moved back to the flipchart and tapped on the words Like Attracts Like. “Why is this important?”
“Most children learn based on the limitations that society teaches. But children who learn to direct their thoughts in a positive manner dream bigger and learn how to manifest their desires.” He made eye contact with each of the participants. “When you teach your kids about energy, you’re empowering them. When they understand energy and how to effectively use it, there’s less drama and fewer behavior issues because they’re able to self-direct.”
Less drama and fewer behavior issues. Now he was talking. If that was true, AJ was willing to give it a try.
“I’m going to call the Law of Attraction ‘LOA’ going forward.” Adrian flashed a grin as he spelled out the letters with his hands. “It’s impossible to talk about the LOA without also talking about the power of positive thinking.” He circled around the front of the classroom. “Everyone wants to be happy, right?”
Participants in the room nodded and a few people shouted, “Yes!”
“Those who are happy are putting out positive vibrations and getting positivity in return. Those who are sad, mad, frustrated, and so on are putting out those vibrations and getting similar vibrations in return. You can’t put out negative vibrations and expect to receive positive vibrations back.” Adrian leaned against the whiteboard in the front of the class. “So how do you stop the negative cycle?”
“Think positively,” Ella offered.
“That’s right.” Adrian smiled at Ella. “If the kids aren’t there, call a timeout.” He rocked back on his heels. “Not a sit-in-the-corner timeout, but something fun. Come up with a family word. Once it’s said, everyone takes a minute—or whatever time you agree on—to re-group, re-center, and check your energy vibrations.”
A young blonde—Sandi, maybe?—raised her hand. “I get the idea of the timeout, but then what? I can’t see my boys going from mad to happy just because we took a minute of silence.”
AJ was glad she’d asked the question because he’d been wondering the same thing.
“Great question, Sandi.” Adrian moved to the whiteboard and wrote, Energy Check and Gratitude. “The timeout isn’t a fix-all. It simply offers a pause so everyone can ground themselves. Afterward, you’ll need to provide a lesson or deploy another technique, like gratitude, which we’ll talk about in a few minutes. But,”—he drew out the word but as if to build anticipation—“after your family members become experts in energy, you may find that the timeout moment is all it takes because your children have learned how to redirect their own energy.”
Ella, AJ, and the kids chose the word ‘mistletoe’ for their timeout. The process worked just like Adrian described, and they all had fun with it, too!
“Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.” — Colin Powell
Why not try this process with your kids, grands, and nieces and nephews? The key is to stop negative energy before it boils over. Once negative energy reaches the boiling point, it takes a long time to resume calm. It’s like water…if you put the kettle on to make tea, when the temperature reaches 212 degrees, your water will boil. To avoid the boiling point with your kids, give this timeout technique a try!
“You can’t make positive choices for the rest of your life without an environment that makes those choices easy, natural, and enjoyable.”—Deepak Chopra

Kindness is a Choice (Nora’s Promise FREE on Kindle thru 9/5!)
**Special note: Nora’s Promise is available for FREE on Kindle, now through 9/5!**
In my contemporary romance, Nora’s Promise, Steph tells Nora “Kindness is a Choice.”
Like Steph, I believe kindness is a choice that we make in each moment. Sometimes it’s easy to be kind; other times, not so much! When people around you aren’t kind and/or when you ingest a steady stream of negativity, it can be a real challenge.
If you focus on the news, the world is all doom and gloom. We’re a country divided and a people full of anger and hatred. But if you look beyond the television to your friends, neighbors, and community, you’ll find a growing trend of kindness and compassion.
Choosing kindness requires presence, intention, and a connection with your true self, but it’s worth the effort. Your act of kindness, however big or small, has wide-reaching impacts. It can make the difference in another person’s day, week….or even in their life. “Constant kindness can accomplish so much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate.”—Albert Schweitzer.
Today, I invite you to join me in choosing kindness—Offer a smile, a hug, a kind word, forgiveness, an unexpected visit, a small gift—the list of opportunities is endless. Your single act of compassion can make all the difference!
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to cause many ripples.”—Mother Teresa.

6 Easy Ways to Practice Gratitude
GRATITUDE: NOUN
“The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” —
Lexico–Oxford Dictionary
No matter where we are on our life’s path, we always have something to be grateful for. Luke Bryan states this well in his smash country hit, “Most People Are Good”: “…every breath’s a gift, the first one to the last.”
Even on a bad day, there are so many things to be grateful for—our breath, shelter, food, family, friends, pets, our planet, and even for life itself. The list is endless if we take time to contemplate.
When we feel gratitude for the blessings in our lives, we cultivate a deep sense of positivity. According to Psychology Today, feeling grateful boosts happiness and delivers physical and psychological health benefits. Our gratitude also benefits others. When we’re feeling grateful, we’re kinder, more generous, and more giving toward our family, friends, and really, everyone around us.
So how does one cultivate a practice of gratitude? There isn’t just one way, but many paths to gratitude.
In my contemporary romance, Nora’s Promise, Nora uses an easy technique—she runs through a mental list of gratitudes in her mind. Below is a brief excerpt:
Nora needed to pull herself together and focus on the now. Using a technique Steph had taught her, she silently listed her gratitudes. Ben, Davey, Steph, Cruz. Cosmo, Concordia, Chance. Ella and Hud. The mountains and open land around them. Her mood lifted and she felt a smile tug at the corners of her mouth. Her list had barely scratched the surface. With so much to be thankful for, how could she be in a bad mood?
6 Easy Ways to Practice Gratitude
1. Like Nora, make a mental list of the things you’re grateful for (this works no matter where you are—in a car, on an airplane, in line at the grocery store…the possibilities are endless!)
2. Write your gratitudes in a journal every morning.
3. Give gratitude at the beginning of your meditation or yoga practice.
4. Take a mindful walk and give thanks for the experiences along your journey.
5. Take turns sharing gratitudes with a group of family members or friends.
6. Perform a random act of kindness (this can be as simple as a smile or a hug, a cup of coffee, or a gift to someone in need.) When you show compassion to others, it’s hard not to feel a corresponding sense of gratitude.
There are so many ways to practice gratitude. This short list is offered to get you started and to inspire you to establish whatever technique works for you.
Gratitude is a powerful process that fosters optimism by shifting energy from negative to positive. Given the significant benefits, why not make gratitude a part of your daily routine?
“Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for happiness. It’s the spark that lights a fire of joy in your soul.” – Amy Collette
