From the Detroit Free Press: Real life intrudes on any sport you choose

"Dad, will you throw a ball with me?"

"In a minute. I'm watching ESPN. Come on. We'll watch together."

"What's the show?"

"It's called 'The Year in Sports.' It's got all the big stories of 2014."

"But I want to play outside."

"It'll be quick. Sit next to me. There you go."

"Who's that?"

"Ray Rice. He's a football player."

"How come the TV's black-and-white?"

"It isn't. That's a recording from an elevator. That's his fiancée getting in it with him."

"Are they having a fight?"

From the Detroit Free Press: Dr. Football on Raiola suspension, Rodgers

The eggnog is gone. The cookies have crumbled. The holiday hangover is in full bloom. And Dr. Football is here to make it better.

Hey, Dr. Football. So what did you get for Christmas?

Let's see. The Lions are in. The Eagles are out. Johnny Manziel has been humbled. I'd say I pretty much got everything I wanted — except one of those big TV screens Aaron Rodgers gave to his offensive linemen.

Yeah. Why did he do that?

To make sure Ndamukong Suh doesn't touch him this weekend.

Tigers swept by Orioles

mitch albom: Winter comes early again and who knows what this team will look like next year

Winter began to creep into the city just after six o'clock Sunday night, courtesy of a man named Nelson Cruz - or, as he is known around here, Death. Cruz, the Baltimore Orioles' designated killer, swatted a David Price pitch in the sixth inning of a scoreless game and lifted it toward rightfield. It appeared, at first, to be a harmless foul.

From the Detroit Free Press: Sick, weary, Diane Bailey endures to help others

Subhead:

Second in an occasional series

Chemotherapy can burn, but right now Diane Bailey is cold. With gloved hands, she holds a warming pack to her mouth and tightens a scarf around her neck. The dripping chemicals slide down a tube and enter her bloodstream through a port in her chest.

When she turns, she can see the wintry Detroit afternoon through a single hospital window and the skyscraper Fisher Building a few blocks away. She works there, for a janitorial company, and she will go back to work after this treatment, once she wakes up from "sleeping all day."

From the Detroit Free Press: Dr. Football, on Cutler, Harbaugh, more

Dashing through the snow, laughing all the way. The office is open. Dr. Football at your service.

Doc! Did you hear the news? Jay Cutler is sitting!

BULL! Oh. Wait. I thought you said "smiling."

Sitting! He's benched for the Detroit game this Sunday!

Why are the Bears being so nice to him?

Jimmy Clausen is starting.

Why are they being so nice to us?

Honestly, Doc. Did you know Jimmy Clausen was still in the NFL?

I didn't know he was still in the country.
