Happy Halloween!

For your viewing enjoyment, here are this year’s pumpkin offerings courtesy of hubby—who carved offerings one and three—and older son—who carved offerings two and four.

Three fun exercises to help you get to know your characters

Here are three fun exercises to help you get to know your characters better. You’re welcome to share your results in the comments :-)

Exercise A:

1. My character wants _______________________ more than anything else in the world.

2. My character will do anything to avoid________________________. (What a character wants to avoid can be as important/compelling as what she/he wants to gain.)

3. My character’s greatest fear is____________________________. (May be the same or different than what she/he...

Easy Fixes for Four Common Mistakes Beginning (and Not-So-Beginning) Writers Make

Writers write. We do it in isolation for the most part, alone with a computer and a bunch of wild and wonderful thoughts. And despite a ton of information available through the internet, magazines, workshops, writing courses, and mentors, we make our own mistakes. Because part of figuring out how to be the best writer you can be is by making mistakes and learning from them. Still, it’s nice to have a warning, a bit of advice from the trenches, so here without further ado are some easy fixes f...

Critique: How to give it and how to take it

I’ve been meaning to start up Writer Wednesday posts for a while now, but something always came up. So today, I put it at the top of my to-do list (well, sort of at the top…there were only about seven things ahead of it) and here it is, my first Writer Wednesday post. If people enjoy it, I’ll keep going and post writing advice at least a couple of times a month.

Street Team!

Street Team! I created a closed group for readers/bloggers/reviewers who love my books. There will be fun tasks every week, and I'll be sending out bookmarks, offering prizes and more—just for team members.

If you'd like to be part of the team with special access to prizes and deleted scenes and chapters written just for team members, head over and join.

The team will be for both my YA and adult titles, but you're welcome to participate only in tasks that involve one or the other.

The Story of RUSH

**Originally posted at Once Upon a Twilight.

The story of RUSH:

Rewind to 2011: I had two ideas for young adult books. The first was a post-apocalyptic story set in the frozen Northern Waste with ice truckers and rebels and Reavers and action. The second was…well, we’ll come back to that.

I loved both ideas, so I tossed a coin and went with the first idea. I wrote a proposal, sent it to my agent. The timing for that proposal was off and it didn’t sell. Clouds gathered, heartbreak ensued and I wa...
