I don’t listen to music while I write. I prefer the cacophony of my own thoughts as I put word to page (or screen). Don’t get me wrong. Music is inspirational, exciting, enthralling. Music helps draw my stories in directions I never expect. And I never know when inspiration will hit. While I’m listening to an awesome workout playlist? While I’m driving? Eating breakfast? Playing Boggle or Scrabble (two of my fave games) on the iPad? When a friend shares a playlist?

That’s what happened recent...

I’ve been thinking about way back YA. Young adult books surged to the fore with Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga. But they must have been around before that, right? I remember reading Nancy Drew books as a kid. And one book that jumps out in my memory is May Nickerson Wallace’s The Ghost of Dibble Hollow—I found it on the shelf in the school library when I was 11 or 12. I wonder if those stories would be considered YA or middle grade in the current system of categorization—I’m thinking middle...
