Review: Firefly by Belle Whittington

15702004

“The darkest days are ahead of us,” Andrew whispered as the drape of shadows slipped away, allowing Blair to awaken. And in her heart of hearts she knew it was true. The unmistakable signs were all around her, growing within her. She was becoming something more than human. All she could do was accept the inevitable.

“I’ve become a freak … an alien. I no longer belong to the human world,” Blair told her true love, and he held her close, determined never to give her up.

“I’d stay in this darkness forever as long as I could be with you. Wherever you are … that’s my home.” Everett meant every word. In fact, he’d willingly give up his own life to protect the girl he’d always loved.

But there was a storm brewing … a firestorm so strong and catastrophic that it could keep them apart forever.

That storm roared into town wearing a brown leather bomber jacket and riding a motorcycle.

Ash was like a secret in human clothing … a dangerous secret. Everything about him was mesmerizing – right down to the swirls of ink that flowed over the smooth muscles across his chest and around his arms. Being with him was like playing with fire.

Blair knew all about playing with fire.

She knew something else, too. A small quiet voice deep within whispered that she really would be separated from everyone and everything she’d known and loved.

Because some secrets run too deep.

Cindy’s Review:
5 STARS

As the second book in the Cicada Trilogy, Fire Fly picks up right where Cicada leaves off. The story of Blair, her older bother Andrew learning they are hybrid Humans from an ancient alien race. Blair is left to try to fit the puzzle pieces of her and her families lives as her Brother and the love of her life Everett leave to places unknown in a fight to stop the destruction of an alien race. As the story unfolds it ties in the ancient cities of South America where the mystery of their origins begin. As Blair discovers she has abilities beyond human nature she also learns she is being hunted by beings who appear to want to kill her. She realizes she will need to learn to control her powers in order to save not only her human family but her alien family as well. As Blair struggles to make sense out of her life a handsome stranger comes into her life whose only goal is to make her his “Queen”. Belle Whittngton give an old subject a different twist drawing the reader into a world of ancient beliefs in today’s time. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Review: Mark of the Mage by R.K. Ryals

Mark of the Mage Cover

Books never die, but they can be forbidden.

Medeisia is a country in turmoil ruled by a blood thirsty king who has outlawed the use of magic and anything pertaining to knowledge. Magery and scribery are forbidden. All who practice are marked with a tattoo branded onto their wrists, their futures precarious.

Sixteen year-old Drastona Consta-Mayria lives secluded, spending her spare time in the Archives of her father’s manor surrounded by scribes. She wants nothing more than to become one of them, but when the scribes are royally disbanded, she is thrust into a harsh world where the marked must survive or die.

Jessica’s Review:
5 STARS!!

A scribe ignores a fierce battle between 3 dragons, trying to finish The Book of Truth, a prophecy about the kingdom. Unfortunately, he is unable to finish. The last line… “The girl, the phoenix of peace, will bring…”

Stone is the illegitimate daughter of nobility, mostly ignored and allowed to learn with the scribes. Her nurse, Aigneis, carries a brand given to all mages. One day, Stone is told she is no longer allowed to visit the scribes in the archive. She is 16, it is time to go to court and marriage. The first of many tragedies happen on the path to court. They are stopped by rebels and Stone is forced to watch the violent death of the most beloved member of her family. She is branded with an inkwell, cracked to symbolized how broken the scribes are. It is Kye, a king’s guard who helps her escape. But nothing is what is seems and all too soon everything Stone knew has been turned upside down and backwards. Kye has his own secrets he is trying to keep hidden.

I loved the balance between Stone and Kye! They still have so much hope, even with the sadness, hurt and pain. I can’t wait to read book 2! I went & downloaded it immediately after finishing Mark of the Mage, because I can’t leave this story where it stopped!

Review: Unexpected by Faith Sullivan

A young couple kissing

One day forever changes the destiny of college overachiever, Michelle Rhodes.

Shattered, confused and alone, no one understands the trauma consuming her until she meets Connor Donnelly.

A native New Yorker, he believes he can aid in getting her life back on track. But what if he’s even more broken inside?

Offering her a chance at a fresh start, Connor convinces Michelle to move in with him. Hiring her to waitress at his bar, their mutual attraction only complicates matters.

As more details surrounding Connor’s past emerge, Michelle uncovers the full magnitude of the loss he’s trying to hide. Refusing to let her feelings for him hinder his recovery, she makes a decision that winds up hurting them both.

By sacrificing her heart, Michelle thinks she is helping Connor come to terms with his grief. Little does she know, Connor is gambling everything for the sake of having a future with her.

What happens is truly unexpected.

Jessica’s Review:

4 STARS!

This was such an emotional read for me and it took me signifigantly longer to review than most books I read. Everyone knows where they were on 9/11. The feelings of loss and pain and fear hit everyone, regardless of what part of the country they were in.

For Michelle, she was 2 miles away from ground zero. It was her first time away from home, first time going to the “big city” for college. The first chapter exposes just how scared and helpless a young woman can be. Not surprisingly Michelle needed to go home, away from college and NYC. Eventually she sinks into such a depression that an intervention happens. Her friend’s roommate’s brother needs help as well. Connor offers her a job, a place to live, and friendship. He wants to show her that NYC isn’t all bad, that there are good parts and people in his city. What quickly becomes obvious is that Connor has another reason for needing Michelle in his life. He needs her as much if not more than she needs him. Can 2 people so completely broken “fix” and heal each other? How can you save someone if you aren’t on steady ground to begin with?

What stuck with me about this book was the honesty, fear and emotion you felt from Michelle. Connor was harder to understand, a bit less clear. At times it felt a bit disjointed the way the relationship between Michelle & Connor happened. Then I realized this was 2 people who were deeply impacted and affected by PTSD. They wouldn’t think clearly, react normally. This book reminded me to be thankful for how far we have come as a society regarding PTSD and mental health.

I will be looking for other works by this author.

Review :WICKED SENSE AND BROKEN SPELL BY FABIO BUENO

Lizzyland is happy to present Wicked Sense and Broken Spell by Fabio Bueno

imageWitches inhabit our world, organized in covens and hiding behind a shroud of secrecy—the Veil.

Skye’s London coven sends her to Seattle’s Greenwood High to find the Singularity, an unusually gifted witch who may break the Veil and trigger a dangerous new era of witch-hunting. Things get complicated when Skye meets a charming new classmate, Drake. Skye’s job becomes even trickier when she clashes with Jane, an intimidating rival witch.

Drake falls for the mysterious Skye, but odd accidents, potion mix-ups, and the occasional brush with death kind of get in the way of romance. Once he discovers Skye is a witch, he goes to war for her, even though his only weapons are a nice set of abs and a sharp sense of humor.

Fighting off wicked Jane and the other dark forces hell-bent on seizing the Singularity’s immense power, Skye and Drake will risk everything to save the covens.

Going on a date has never been harder

CINDY MOIT’S THOUGHTS

Wicked Sense (The Singularity Series, Book 1) Fabio Bueno takes a familiar story plot andadds his own twist to it. The Daughter of a stage star has enough to deal with but when compounded with being a White Witch life is even more interestingly difficult. With her gift of being able to sense other witches, Skye is senttothe US from herhome in England to attend a school and help her andher mother’s coven find the “Singularity” the one Witch whose powers are unbounded by the laws of nature or man. This must all be done without breaking the “veil” that protects the existence of witches. When she arrives she not only discovers there are other witches within her community, but that some of the are dark witches of the Night Coven who also are looking for the Singularity in order to use her and her powers for their evil intentions. One of whom mayhave beenplaced inherschoolforthe same reason. Feelingalone and unsure of herself Skye never dreams she will meet a boy who will not only take her heart but will become an important part of her quest to find the Singularity. A Fabio Bueno must read for anyone who enjoys a simply yet well written plot line.

The vicious Night covens seek retribution at all costs. Wicked Jane has returned, scarred from her last confrontation with Drake and Skye, and holding a baffling secret that may change everything.

Dangerous alliances arise. The Veil is about to be broken.

Falling in love has never been harder

CINDY MOIT’S THOUGHTS

Broken Spell (The Singularity Series, Book 2) As Skye continues to struggle in her quest to find the Singularity she is quickly learning things may not always appear to be what they truly are. The one bright spot in all that is going on is Drake. She still can’t believe is she lucky enough to have such a wonderful boyfriend. When he learns the truth of what she is and why she is at his school her worst fears are laid to rest as he begins to help her find the Singularity and tries his best to protect her from Jane the Dark Witch at their school and the Night Coven’s. As the pace of the book picks up it becomes evident that the Singularity is indeed at the school Skye was sent to and it becomes a race to identify her before the Night Covens do. Things begin to spiral out of control after she discovers the Singularity when she accidentally blows up their school. Then challenge then becomes how to hide the newly found Singularity from not only the Night Coven but her own sisterhood as she realizes all parties involved only want the Singularity to control her powers. Betrayal and surprise allies make for great plot twists and another must read from Fabio Bruno I am looking forward to number 3.
