Deb E could never write a *short* story for English class assignments. She took up writing stories as a hobby in high school, often sharing these with her friends at lunch time, but pushed fiction to the side for the sake of a few serious years of science writing for under- and post-graduate study in Zoology. Then it was time to adult and get paying work. Eventually, she landed a job that didn't occupy her mind fully enough, and soon pen joined paper and a fantasy novel had begun which, after several false starts and some shaping and moulding, turned into Healer's Touch.

Deb lives near Dunedin, New Zealand with her family and a menagerie of pets.

But for winter, I'll be continuing on with Ben Galley's Heart of Stone, and then I am really (*really*) looking forward to Sonya Lano's The Ever Spirits... that'll be next.(less)

Althou…moreI think I would have to say Jamie and Claire in the Outlander series. At this time, I just can't think of another couple I adore quite so much. Although, if we step outside of books for a moment, I totally root for Felicity and Oli... Why couldn't Arrow explore a healthy relationship working together? That being said, I like that they are adult enough to work together after splitting up.
But, yeah, Claire and Jamie. They're passionate about each other, but it's not all passion all the time... they DO stuff as a couple. The romance is central, but it's not ALL. (less)

AI Continues to Waste Time

Just felt like sharing this. For writers who have been around the sun a few times, they’ve likely seen this in various forms over the years and know how to roll their eyes and hit “Bin it”. Newer writers may find it harder to dismiss. I’m a lot more jaded than I used to be. ...

“They want your sons.”
“My–? But I don’t… ew!”
Deb E. Howell, Healer's Touch

“could see. He pulled his arms from her and loosened the next button, letting her explore further. Her towel, no longer held firm about her, fell to the floor. “Oh, what did you do to Karlani?” he asked, unbuttoning the rest”
Deb E. Howell, Healer's Touch

“If you gotta scratch the itch, scratch it. Or, if you want to do away with the day job, scratch, itch or no!”

“Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city.”
George Burns

“The truth is, everyone likes to look down on someone. If your favorites are all avant-garde writers who throw in Sanskrit and German, you can look down on everyone. If your favorites are all Oprah Book Club books, you can at least look down on mystery readers. Mystery readers have sci-fi readers. Sci-fi can look down on fantasy. And yes, fantasy readers have their own snobbishness. I’ll bet this, though: in a hundred years, people will be writing a lot more dissertations on Harry Potter than on John Updike. Look, Charles Dickens wrote popular fiction. Shakespeare wrote popular fiction—until he wrote his sonnets, desperate to show the literati of his day that he was real artist. Edgar Allan Poe tied himself in knots because no one realized he was a genius. The core of the problem is how we want to define “literature”. The Latin root simply means “letters”. Those letters are either delivered—they connect with an audience—or they don’t. For some, that audience is a few thousand college professors and some critics. For others, its twenty million women desperate for romance in their lives. Those connections happen because the books successfully communicate something real about the human experience. Sure, there are trashy books that do really well, but that’s because there are trashy facets of humanity. What people value in their books—and thus what they count as literature—really tells you more about them than it does about the book.”
Brent weeks

“We accept the love we think we deserve.”
Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

“Love blurs your vision; but after it recedes, you can see more clearly than ever. It's like the tide going out, revealing whatever's been thrown away and sunk: broken bottles, old gloves, rusting pop cans, nibbled fishbodies, bones. This is the kind of thing you see if you sit in the darkness with open eyes, not knowing the future.”
Margaret Atwood, Cat’s Eye

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”
Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
