It really is. I find it increadibly hard to believe that the dumpster fire that is the Twilight is higher up than superior books such as Scott Pilgrim, Skulduggery Pleasant, and Eragon. Also, this is my opinion, Twilight stans, please don't kill me.

Same here. I'm also getting an aneurysm from seeing diary of a wimpy kid on a young adult book list.

Hi, looking for a Young Adult book I read about twenty years ago but I can't remember the title. In the story, there are three teenagers who run into the woods and end up in another world (2 popular kids - boy and a girl, chasing a fat boy who I think is called Roderick). The other world is pre-industrial and they meet a man who also fell through the portal many years ago. The fat boy adapts and becomes skinny/strong and makes friends while the two popular kids struggle. The locals plan on taking them to some towers where the rulers live. The popular boy hates this other world and wants to make it industrial/more modern etc. Does anyone know what this book is called?

Any of the Canadian author Julie Czerneda. Strong young adult female leads in crazy situations, sci-fi and fantasy, that make good ,ultimately, choices in fixing their situations.

message 1266: by Ella (new)

Ella Schnare I hate Twilight. It really isn't even written well. If you think it is, go pick up The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings, and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and then try to tell me that it is written well.
As for Harry Potter, It is ok. There are much better ones out there: Holes, A Little Princess, The Little Prince, The Maze Runner, and even Percy Jackson.

Owen Knuth I hate books

Ella Schnare then why are you on goodreads?

message 1269: by Mel (last edited Apr 04, 2023 06:08AM) (new)

Mel Foster Ok friends,
If you like to read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish or If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, those aren't YA. Those are beginning reader or early reader books. I'm not saying you can't read them. But don't tell your friends you read YA.

YA also has a general (though not universal) connotation of FICTION, so while many of these books are great recommends for teen readers, they're not generally considered YA, although the list definition is not exclusive about that. For instance The Diary of Anne Frank: And Related Readings, The Autobiography of Malcolm X and The Declaration of Independence & The US Constitution make an appearance.

YA generally has a reading level of grade 12 or below. And therefore usually YA doesn't include Shakespeare plays or Beowulf. Look, I'm an English teacher and I taught these in high school. But they're not YA.
Traditionally at least, YA didn't include explicit content that would make 4 out of 5 grandmothers cringe to read with their grandkids, like, say, 1984 orThe Stand , though tragedy and hard issues are certainly common.

So anyway, there are a number of books I like on this list. I didn't vote for them because it's the wrong list for them. I didn't delete them. But could we use this list to lift up YA?

message 1270: by Louise (new)

Louise Culmer Many of the books on this list seem rather young for the category. I wouldn’t call Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Charlotte’s Web Young Adult for instance. I always assumed Young Adult was books aimed at teenagers. This list seems very random.

Angela Fellow English Teacher here and author. I was inspired by Twilight when I co-authored the BEYOND series by Catina Haverlock and Angela Larkin.

M.M. Strawberry Library & Reviews The Secret of Moon Lake does not belong on this list, the author was using sockpuppets to put herself on multiple lists, including ones where she obviously did not belong.

Don't get me wrong, the first time you read it its pretty good but both of the movies and the book, get really cringe and after you read it a few times it gets anoyying

message 1287: by Kaija (new)

Kaija Bear Twilight is ok but after a while it gets annoying. ( And you realize how cringe it is). Harry Potters ok too, but I kind of lost interest after a while.
