Hannah Diana wrote: "i liked some of these books but the vampire idea is SO over-used now..."

Yeah, it gets a tad annoying that every other new books released (especially in the young-adult genre) are mostly about vampires.

message 4: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Jones Twilight, are you kidding me? Where is Stephen Kings's 'Salem's Lot?

message 5: by Rachal (new)

Rachal More like "New Moon". I really dislike that book.

message 6: by Kethnie (new)

Kethnie how come you didn't add the blue blood seires better than twilight to me

message 7: by Crystal (new)

Crystal OH. MY. GOD. I seriously CANNOT believe that Twilight is on the top of this list. I know it's a major cultural phenomenon, especially among young teenage readers, but IMO it is most definitely not worthy of being called one of the "best" vampire books.

i totally agree! i love this stuff, and every book is different, puts a new spin on the vampire universe.

Kirsten Crystal wrote: "OH. MY. GOD. I seriously CANNOT believe that Twilight is on the top of this list. I know it's a major cultural phenomenon, especially among young teenage readers, but IMO it is most definitely not ..."

My thoughts exactly. Why is Twilight at the top of the list and Dracula is only number 3? There's a problem here.

message 11: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten I'm also very surprised that no one has added the Anita Blake books to this list. I'm not going to because I thought they were awful, but I was under the impression that that was a very popular series.

message 12: by Tiani (new)

Tiani I love vampire books. You may think " Ho hum, its only because of the twilight saga," but im not a big fan of that. I love books of things that can't happen, as in Vampires and wearwolfs.

message 13: by Jason (new)

Jason A good list, but how about these other vampire books...

The Stake
Bite
The Travelling Vampire Circus
(all are by Richard Laymon)

or...

The Keep (by F. Paul Wilson)

or...

The Thirst (by Robert McCameron)

or...

Carrion Comfort
Children of the Night
(both are by Dan Simmons)

or...

Gideon (by Stephen Laws)

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Great list. I love most vampire books, including Twilight. I really don't know why so many people get up in arms over it - it's just a story. Okay, the vampires sparkle, but at least that's different. Everyone would be equally unhappy if Meyer had gone out and copied every other vampire novel.

message 15: by C-tim (new)

C-tim I have read way too many books about vampires.

message 24: by Gina (last edited May 23, 2010 09:21AM) (new)

Gina Twilight isn't a book about vampires . . . Just because Meyer says they are doesn't make it true.
Kind of like how in the last book at the very end she suddenly reveals the pack aren't 'werewolves' but 'shapeshifters.'
Or how she says Bella is smart >_>

message 25: by Lilly (last edited May 25, 2010 11:38PM) (new)

Lilly Why the hell is Twilight above Dracula on this list? Dracula practically defined a whole genre. When people hear the word 'vampire' Dracula is the first thing that many think of. Twilight is a housewife's poorly written sex fantasy. It's a fad and one that can't die out fast enough.

message 26: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess Vampires dont sparkle.
Sorry, but its true.

I did love TWILIGHT untill the movies.

But even then, DRACULA was better.

The Count for everrrrrr

message 29: by Andrea (new)

Andrea How could anyone with any taste rank Twilight above Dracula? Pretty pathetic. It's funny how it took a book that bad (Twilight) to get people interested in vampires...a subject that has since been ruined by the aforementioned book. A book that took such an engaging and terrifying subject and turned it into Vampire 90210. Vampires sparkle in the sun...are you kidding me?

message 30: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Lilly wrote: "Why the hell is Twilight above Dracula on this list? Dracula practically defined a whole genre. When people hear the word 'vampire' Dracula is the first thing that many think of. Twilight is a hous..."

Well put, I couldn't agree with you more!

message 31: by Adriana (new)

Adriana It seems that no matter where I go, Twilight follows. It makes me wonder why people think this is a vampire book, when the author has clearly said that she doesn't like vampires, has never read a vampire book other than Interview with the Vampire, doesn't watch horror movies because they scare her, and can't understand why people are interested in these monsters and want to read about them.

message 32: by Bridget (last edited Jun 28, 2010 09:52AM) (new)

Bridget Spencer To al those twilight haters...
Twilight is an amazing book.. I've read the vampire academy and that series is amazing to.. but their different kinds of amazing for different people. I like both but that doesn't mean everyone does. U can sit there and say twilight is this and that but when it comes down to it well there is a reason while it is at the top of the list so get over it!! And for those complaining about them sparkling I mean really!!... unless u no a real vampire dam live vampire (which I'm pretty sure u dont) then don't act like u no how they r suppose to b! Vampires vary from book to book, humans rnt all the same either some might have 9 or 11 fingers instead of 10 that doesn't make them any less human now does it!? both twilight and vampire academy also give u different views on vampires that's y they r so popular.... look at the moroi, where besides vampire academey have u have heard of vampires being weak and needing to b protected by half humans. People!!... this is FICTION not life it all comes down to the authors version/interpretation of vampires... since the time when dracula was written vampire ideas have evolved like the rest of the world always has and to b honest that's not who I think of when I think of vampires I think of a being who have to drink blood to live if the character has that then guess what.. its a vampire. whenever u c twilight listed in the nonfiction section then complain.. there's a reason its not.... they rnt real!!! end of story

message 33: by Adriana (new)

Adriana oh, ok. let's see.... so I'm supposed to love twilight because it presents a different view on vampires right? because according to Stephanie Meyer they... sparkle, and that's fine because nobody said that she should at least loosely follow the different ancient myths and legends that gave birth to the figure of the vampire; it's only fiction and there I guess I even might agree with you.

What all of you "twilight lovers" out there don't trully understand, is that this isn't the only problem this book has. The grammar is poor, the writing style is terrible, the characters are flat and annoying, and I don't have to pretend that I like this book just because you and 1000 other frustrated girls say that I have to. I have a RIGHT to rate this book with a 1 star just like others have the same right to hate books that I love. (And yes, I've read it, so I know what I'm talking about)

Thanks.

message 34: by C-tim (new)

C-tim Too lazy to look at the whole list but I really liked Sunglasses after Dark.
For the Twilight fans - I read it, but not the others, and thought it was okay but not my kind of book. However, I really don't understand why people dislike it so vehemently. The characters and style work and the plot moves smoothly.

message 35: by Kathy (new)

Kathy well i read all the twilight saga books first before i got into some very adult vamp books , but only read twilight after i show the movie , because edward cullin (robert patt,) is hot and nice to the eyes lol
but there are some really good reads out there and im reading ,

I agree........... I thought I was yhe only one who thinks that way ;)

message 38: by Sojung (new)

Sojung In my opinion, Twilight is the best. Other books that are also bout vampires are too aggressive. Stephanie Meyer wrote this book for teens and young adults to enjoy. Successfully she has alot more fans than haters. I really enjoy her work and others do too.

message 39: by Jijah (new)

Jijah WTH! twilight's above dracula??

message 40: by Alya (new)

Alya agreed.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I love the Twilight books not for the vampires. Yes it makes it interesting but I love them because of the story and characters.

message 42: by Bipolar (new)

Bipolar Instinct If you think you like the book...read it, if not just put it on your "not a good book" bookshelf. Let other people said what they want.., good or bad about the book. Difference makes life complete and beautiful, so why do you have to push other people to like or dislike about one book..or more. Your words are clear enough to show other people who you really are. Good or bad enough to be a human. Come on we are only readers.. if you think you are smart enough..well trying to make a book that will be a "New York bestseller" kind of book rather than just saying something inappropriate about someone or someone's work.

Honestly? A bit too much hate IMO.
Twilight is a cliche made for teenage girls to feel good and sell well. Sure, but how many other books are like that?
And really, why do you care?
WHy do you HATE it so bad? Hate it, don't read it and avoid anywhere discussing it by all means.
I think I agree with you on pretty much all instances, and hell, Lestat is WAY MUCH MORE of a vampire than any of Meyer's. And yet, I don't think it's nice to go around bashing people for liking it (as it is not nice to bash people for disliking it). Summin up, I'm just pointing... Why so much anger?

*shrugs* I won't argue.

message 46: by David (new)

David Marks Twilight isn't even real horror it shouldn't be on a list about vampire books. They aren't even real vampires. They are whiny brats. Go ahead hate me teenagers!

message 47: by Uke (new)

Uke Jackson A reader reviewed my new "BROADWAY VAMPIRE" and had this to say -- "I liked the vampire lore of this book. It was well thought out and intriguing. Make no mistake this is a vampire with a capital V, no sparkly veggie angsty emo guy, but a murderous unapologetic drinker of human blood.:"

So, its no Twi for tweens.

message 48: by Dameyon (new)

Dameyon Moore This list makes my eyeballs ache. It's mostly just a bunch of vampire romance novels that make for good necrophiliac obsessed fantasies.

I Am Legend is at 26, and that's disgusting.

While I agree with some of your points on your "list". There are a few redeeming qualities about the story. Even though you don't get to them until the last ten chapters of the final book. Also the perfection of the whole damn thing does make me a bit queasy.
Anyway... So I've noticed that you have a bit of a hatred thing going on with Twilight, but I noticed that you've rated the "Blue Bloods" series high. Really? Twilight disgusted you but Blue Bloods was on point? Hmm...

Mayara wrote: "I get the reasons. I don't get why waste time and effort to feel that hate...

I agree. That's a lot of time and effort. But I guess we all have to have our emo hobbies. *clicks onward*

Dameyon wrote: "This list makes my eyeballs ache. It's mostly just a bunch of vampire romance novels that make for good necrophiliac obsessed fantasies..."

Well, yea... Dude the list is called, "Best Vampire Books" and vampires are fantasy. Right? But I do see what you mean. There is hardly enough gore in some of these stories. *coughs* Twilight *coughs* But I think what you're looking for may be closer to the horror genre. You can thank Bram Stoker for the concept of the passionate almost warrior like vampire image having nightly encounters with unsuspecting women.

I myself have just started reading vampire novels and have read Dracula, the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward, Twilight series and have just started Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. So far Hamilton's series is a little slow compared to the action in Ward's novels. Ward takes a total different approach to the vampire world which makes it quite interesting. I have to agree that compared to the Twilight vampires, ugh. But that's just my personal preference for an Alpha Male and an equally strong female in my stories. I can't deal with the second string warm up team. Sorry for the sports reference... I'm sure as I dabble more into the vampire novels my list will change and grow long.
