Hey James, so glad to hear you enjoy the books! Age of Swords (book #2 of Legends) is off to the copyeditors so it is out of my hands for awhile. This is probably the question I'm asked the most. And it's not a 15-second answer so bear with me.
So, when I wrote Riyria Revelations I created all six books before signing book #1. This made it so I had a very definite story arc with a very carefully determine beginning and endpoint. So, when I finished it, I didn't think there would be any more books with the pair or in that time line. What I did anticipate was:
* Books that show the forming of the First Empire (and hence Legend of the First Empire was born)
* Books written in Esrahaddon's timeline (which also provides background information for Nevrik and Jerish.
Now, along the way people wanted more Royce and Hadrian, and so The Riyria Chronicles came into being. Because I didn't want to "tack on" to what I felt was a very satisfying conclusion, I went back in time rather than forward.
I stil stand by my desire not to "tack on" - but as I've been writing the past I do have a lot of ideas for the future so I could see books past Heir of Novron. What I don't know at this time is (a) how far in the future would they take place (i.e. right after Heir of Novron - which may or may not feature Royce and Hadrian and the gang, 20 - 30 years in the future where some of the younger people of the book are now grown and therefore could be main characters, or very far in the future where most of the people from Revelation's time frame are dead.
Basically I have several ways I could go, but I don't know which (or even if there will be any) until I actually sit down to write them. In any case I'm going to be pretty tied up for the near term (release schedule below). Once those are out of the way - I'll seriously consider it.
* Jun 2017 - Age of Swords (Book #2 of Legends of the First Empire)
* Oct/Nov 2017 - Untitled (Book #4 of the Riyria Chronicles
* Jan 2018 - Age of War (Book #3 of Legends of the First Empire)
* Jun 2018 - Age of Legends (Book #3 of Legends of the First Empire)
That's 4 books in a year's time so I'll be plenty busy during then. I'd say I'll know a lot more come June 2018 - so stay tuned!

Hello MJS. I am going to find your book The First Empire. I enjoyed just reading what you have here on this page. I will start it in less than a week and let you know how I like it. My reading group is looking for a new author to start in on. We just finished all of JRRT books and so a new adventure begins in Jan. Is there a better starting book from you?

Hi Mr. Sullivan! Really enjoyed reading who influenced you as a writer. Can you provide any recommendations for people of color in the genre? Are there any that have influenced or continue influencing your writing now? FYI I am a white person looking to read more diverse voices in the field, and would love to learn who my favourite authors read. Thanks so much!

Hello Michael, I'm looking into reading your books because of recommendations on goodreads. I noticed your influences include Stephen King who most would say falls in the category of horror/thriller. King is one of my favorite authors and I was wondering if you write a darker fantasy or if they are filled with suspense like King's books? Maybe like the suspense and adventure from The Dark Tower series? Thanks!
