My all time favourite has always been Alistair, The Duke of Avon and Leonie, from The Old Shades.
The reasons are varied. Firstly, it was one of the first romances I read in my teens and it left a lasting impression and a love of the Georgian era, including the Regency. Secondly, I have always been a sucker for cross-dressing females and Leon/Leonie does it so well. Thirdly is that quintessential wounded hero in need of reform, the Duke. Sigh. What more could any girl want?
The excellence of the writing swept me away to another world at a time in my life when I was pretty lonely. Perhaps it is this last that makes this couple endure for me. Not only were they characters in a book, I lived their lives with them. They were my friends.
