Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

My interest in history is very very broad, from ancient history to contemporary topics, from the history of civilizations to the history of the Earth. I'm just a history lover trying to grasp past times, I always want to know how it was and why.
Recently I've been intrigued by the daily life in the WWII in Europe particularly in Germany, and about the WWI in general. Any suggestions?
Last book read: Guns, Germs, and Steel The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond by Jared Diamond.
Currently reading: A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson by Bill Bryson
Probably next: 1491 New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann by Charles C. Mann
I hope to enjoy history even more!

While I read many different genres, I love to learn about cultures through their history. Then to read historical fiction placed in those times to get more of a flavor, a context that strictly non fiction accounts can't give as well. I am especially interested in the British Isles and in Ancient Cultures. Political history as well, both in the US and other places.

I look forward to participating :)

Having never been interested in history when I was in school, I was surprised to find out that I'm now very interested in all history from all around the world, from all centuries. I was interested in starting my own book club to help educate people in history & politics until I found your book club. Jani - Nice to meet you and welcome to the club. With your interest in American Civil War here are a few book recommendations:

Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin (About Lincoln, his political genius in crafting his cabinet and leading the country through the Civil War)

Crucible of Command by William C. Davis (A parallel look at the country's two greatest generals during the war, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant, from birth through the end of the war, how their lives were similar and dissimilar)

Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson (As the title states, this is the story of the hunt for Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth)

Killing Lincoln by Bill O'Reilly (O'Reilly takes an unconventional approach to the telling of Lincoln's assassination, it is like reading history and a novel all at once).

I hope you try one of the above and if you do, let us know what you think.

There are also many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books should look:
