Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Glad you joined us, Louis. This is the place to be for the history lover. You might want to go to the following link to join in the discussions of your favorite topic.

India

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Elizabeth John | 3 comments Hi
Elizabeth, from England, now living in California. For me, the past informs the present. I love English history, especially from the Wars of the Roses to the Restoration, and grew up surrounded by reminders of these times. I ran through our local village library at a young age, reading everything from Anya Seton to Mary Stewart, and I can't leave the house without a book, terrified that I'll be stuck somewhere without a friend. (Yes, I do have a kindle, but ...).
Moving to America I found a whole new perspective on British history (y'think so?!) and spent time in Williamsburg and New York. In California, I fell in love with the Missions and their rich heritage, and the impact they continue to have on our native culture.
Looking forward to exploring and contributing to the group.

Serene | 4 comments Hi, I'm Serene from California. I've always loved history. I remember being 13, 14 years old, reading this 2 inch thick book on the kings and queens of Europe, then reading something about the Chinese dynasties. Lizzie Borden, the Titanic, the explorations of North America, into the Artic and Antarctic, all are intensely interesting.
Then I became a Baha'i, a member of the Baha'i Faith that is only 171 years old founded in Persia, so I've read a lot about Islam, the world in the 1800s, stories of the early believers in the Baha'i Faith, etc so this has only deepened my interest in history of all sorts.
I consider myself the 'black sheep' of my family. Converted to a different religion than my family, lived in another country, have a sense of purpose in volunteering and I consider myself to be very social - none of this is my family! What happened to me??
Any-whoo, that's me. Serene from Sacramento, CA

Sam, below the empty comment box, there are two check-boxes. The second one says "Notify me when people comment on this group" which you can edit. When you click on edit, click on "none". Try that, and let me know if it works.

I studied History in college extensively (a few units from a Bachelors) but ended up switching to Psychology instead (I know, unfortunate!). I want to focus my literature efforts on American History to prep for a Nationwide trip. Any author or title suggestions would be appreciated! I look forward to participating with other like minds.

Cynthia Nobles | 2 comments History is my passion -- and I'll read anything on the subject, all the way from the origins of the earth to modern political figures. Especially love food history, biographies, European History, American History (I have a degree in American History from the University of New Orleans) and history of mankind in general. South Louisiana has an extremely interesting history, and I spend lots of time in libraries and in dusty university archives researching our ancestors' antics.

Francesco Brancato Hi everybody,

My name is Francesco, 31, originally from Roma now living in Berlin.

I always loved history, initially I preferred contemporary but eventually I extended my interest in almost all times and places (in particular Roman age, for obvious reasons).

I was lucky enough to study politics at the university, which involves a lot of history books. This gave me a solid background, but I now want to dig deeper.

Every now and then I also enjoy reading historical fiction. My other favourite genres are politics, fantasy and philosophy.

I am currently reading two books that I am finding quite nice, so I'll share them with you:

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Volume I by Edward Gibbon by Edward Gibbon Edward Gibbon

Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy, #1) by Ken Follett by Ken Follett Ken Follett

Thanks for accepting me in the group,

Cheers!

Hi Francesco,
I'm new here too. I loved the Fall of Giants and the rest of the trilogy. I usually read non-fiction, but Follett did a great job of incorporating the history with a good story.

Gregory Klages | 1 comments Hello, my name is Gregory.

I teach at several Canadian universities, and cover topics ranging from Canadian 19th and 20th century history, law and ethics, media and cultural policy, Aboriginal histories, etc.

Most of the books I read concern history. A few recurring themes include:
- Canadian history (particularly 20th century politics, cultural and intellectual history, and war),
- 20th century military history (focusing on European battles, but also include the South African, SE Asian post-WWII wars, and other smaller skirmishes ranging from the Falklands to the Afghan War),
- cultural and intellectual history (particularly arts advocacy, 20th century art history, and 19th and 20th century philosophy esp. French and German)
- I also read political history quite widely, covering from Athenian democracy to Italian fascism to US contemporary issues
- A sideline curiousity is Biblical revisionist history perhaps most popularly known as the kind written by Bart Ehrman

I look forward to contributing, and learning from the HBC.

(Strange aside, HBC are the initials for the Hudson Bay Company, which in the 1670s was granted the exclusive right to harvest furs from much of what is now Canada. The HBC's stewardship of the territory, and the large Aboriginal population within the HBC territories, is one that is not entirely celebrated in Canada, particularly among Aboriginal peoples.)

Alex Pizarro (alexpizarro) Hello everyone. My name is Alex, I'm a high school student looking forward for a History degree. I'm from Mexico although I'm currently living in the United States. I clashed with history for the first time while reading the classics. I would say it is rather difficult reading the classics without also reading about history.

I don't particularly have a historical time period or subject that I have more interest than for others, but If I had to name some I would say that I get thrilled reading about:
-History of science
-Development of religions, conflicts and controversies (Salem, Reformation, Crusades, Heresy.)
-The medieval period
-History of monarchies
-Revolutions and rebellions of countries
-Law history (Impacting court cases, laws being introduced)

Really glad to have joined the group! I hope I can explore more reading recommendations through here.

Koskinen Sari (leofurioso) | 1 comments Hello and good evening/night, it depends where you are.

My name is Sari Koskinen and I'm from Finland (which means that I will be sorry if you have some problems to read my texts, because English isn't my mother tongue). Yes, in this small country which one neighbour is Russia. I'm 26, un-employee at now, because economical situation isn't so good in here. Trying to get some jobs, reading some things to my entrance examinations of university to get my Master's degree (I have bachelor's degree of engineer). I have always like to read books and that's why my bookshelves are "quite big" because amount of books.

I have always loved history and it was my favorite subjects when I was school. If I can choose where I want to go if time-travel trip is possible thing to do, it will be Czar's Russia or time around in 1918 in Finland. Maybe it is part of my own family history which made those years interesting, because my grandparents for my dad's side were emigrants from St. Petersburg and their childhood was difficult because the Civil War of Finland in 1918. When I have read many books which tell what kind of live was this time, I can understand more what my own grandparents means when they told their stories before they were gone. I was small kid when they died, but when I become older, I can understand those things better. I'm thankful that I got to know those stories.

I don't have any special subjects or times after those which I mentioned, where I have interesting, but I like read different things like:

-History of sports
-Ancient Egypt
-History of science
-Asian's history (Japan, China, Korea)
-Military history (WWI and WWII non-fiction and fiction)
-Crime history (which included mafia, yakuza, triad, cartels etc...and for examples biographies of criminals, what kind of live was women's who lived with crime family or who were part of the Civil War in 1918 and were called like red girls or something like that (Finnish term is "punatyttö").

Well I'm happy that I found this group. And I hope that sometimes we also can speak with each others because I think that even our views with history might be different and we know different things because our own history or what were main points in school etc.
-Sari

Pequeniosaltamontes | 1 comments Hello! I'm Susana from Tucumán, a place in the north west of Argentina. I love reading and History is one of the subjects I like best. My favourite literature author is Jorge Luis Borges. I have a lot of history subjects I would love to read about, like ancient history of people like the summerians, egyptians, greeks, romans, incas, history of my country, history of the first and second world wars, biographies of a lot of people (Newton, Napoleon, Churchill, Hannibal, Shakespeare, Bertrand Russell, the caesars, etc.), history of music and computing, etc.. In fact, I think I'm curious about almost everything.
I was a Shelfari user and I had bad luck with the import to Goordreads of the bunch of books I had there, so I'm adding them little by little again. :-(
I hope that I can contribute with something to the group, and I'm sure that I will learn a lot from you all.

message 740: by Sindre (new)

Sindre | 2 comments Hi everyone! The name is Sindre, out of Norway (the most beautiful country in the world, FYI :D ). I'm 25 years old, and I'm a big military history buff.

My history interest started when I was very young, listening to my grandpa's stories from growing up in occupied Norway during World War 2. The War (as it is simply known in Norway) has therefore always been a part of my life, and my greatest passion.

Recently, my field of interests has become ever more narrow, and I regard World War 2 naval history as my home field, with particular emphasis on the Royal Navy. My field of expertise, if you can call it that, is naval aviation (especially the British Pacific Fleet and the American Fast Carrier Task Force) and general ship design, hereunder gunnery, anti-aircraft gunnery, fire control systems and doctrine/tactics. These subjects have completely absorbed my life the last few years, as I find them enormously interesting, and I'm thinking about getting a degree some day. Nothing definitive, though, but I have written a series of articles (in Norwegian) on an online forum about these subjects, so I do at least have some practice. All in the future, so we'll see!

I am, apart from that, also interested in military history in general and, as I usually say, also "interested in knowledge", so I have no problems reading a book as long as it is well written. Books I have read includes subjects such as the Roman Empire, the Thirty Year's War, the Napoleonic Wars, modern wars (the Cold War, Vietnam, Falklands, Iraq/Afghanistan), as well as great power politics and relations. I've even read (and am currently reading) a few fantasy novels as a challenge, and I've really enjoyed it!

So anyway, that's me!

Have a lovely evening, everyone!

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck by John Steinbeck John Steinbeck

Veronica Shawcroft | 3 comments Hi, I'm Veronica and my main areas of interest in history have been the Civil War, World War I & II, the Middle Ages and other early European history although all history is fascinating since it makes up the world we live in.

Currently, I'm reading The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 by Christopher Clark which has an excellent account of how Serbia's culture and politics impacted the start of the war. Most accounts of how the war began typically include only a few paragraphs about the Black Hand's assassination of Duke Ferdinand; this more in-depth account adds other facets to the mosaic.

Michael Stone | 1 comments Hello,

It is a pleasure to meet everyone here. I enjoy reading all genres. I am currently reading Marcus Aurelius "Meditations", written over two thousand years ago. I will be reading Thomas Paine, "Rights of Man" next. Feel free to drop me a line anytime.

Avicena Azkha (grand_exile) | 3 comments Hello, my name is Azkha. I'm a university student from Indonesia. Due to my nationality i mostly read on the colonial and post-colonial era of Asia ( specifically South East Asia ). Importance of trade on commodities such as coffee, sugar and spice in 18-19th century have always interest me. Right now, however, i'm interested in early modern european society and i'm trying to get books on native american ( especially the mississippi region ).

For my favourite writer, i think it would Pramoedya Ananta Toer, and his Buru quartet ( i personally think more people should read it ).

message 749: by Anne (new)

Anne Strachan Hello everyone. I'm Anne from the UK. I'm passionate about history. My long-term interests are medieval and Tudor history which I studied in school and at University. However I'm interested in any period or theme. The more I know, the more I realise I don't know.

I read around the places I plan to visit on holiday and when something crops up in conversation or on TV that shows a huge gap in my knowledge.

Currently I am looking for a good readable overview of the Second World War. My travels in 2016 will take me to Naples and Catalonia. I would be delighted for any pointers to sub-groups.

I look forward to finding out much more about history and the members here.
