Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) We are so glad you have joined our international group of history lovers, Jonathan, Abdi and Marithe. There is a lot going on here....good group reads, discussions, and the sharing of book recommendations. It is the place to be for the history buff. Enjoy!!

message 52: by Eric (new)

Eric (ringger) Greetings from Seattle. My name is Eric, and I love to read history. Given the choice between fiction and history, I pick history almost every time. Somehow it helps me see the world more clearly, sympathize with people more deeply, and hope for a better world. I love exploring, and sometimes exploring through a book is what fits in my everyday life. I have lived in Germany and Austria and gravitate to understanding those places, but other places can also captivate my attention. Let the best parts of history repeat themselves, and let's learn from the more difficult episodes. Onward, --Eric

Mark (mdub1607) | 1 comments Greetings--my name is Mark and I'm happy to have found this book club (and goodreads). Originally from Seattle (now live in Utah), son of English immigrants, degrees in German Literature, so I'm very interested in English/German/European history, particularly from the Weimar Republic through WW2. I do dabble in some fiction in German to keep up my language skills, but I gravitate towards non-fiction. Looking forward to learning from many of you!

Stephanie | 1 comments Hello! My name is Stephanie. I'm 24 and I'm from Canada.

I love prehistory, Ancient Egypt, the Minoan civilization (any ancient civilization, really), Victorian Britain, WWI, WWII, and Canadian history. There are probably other things I'm forgetting but those come to mind.

I just wanted to join an active group and see what kind of books other people who like history are reading.

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Mark. Welcome to the History book club!

We are equally happy that you discovered Goodreads as well as HBC. I do hope you will find what you look for here and stay with us as long as possible.

We have a lot of different topics here on HBC so check out our homepage and see what we offer. You can access the main page through this link:

HBC mainpage

Based on your introduction, I recommend you to check out these threads:

British history,

First World War

and

Second World War

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Rose | 25 comments Hello History lovers!

My name is Rose. I have a keen interest in historical non-fiction, in particular (but not limited to) British History in the Medieval and Renaissance eras (including an emphasis on historical warfare), Western Classical Music History, Western medicine and also some WWII-era reads.

History has always been fascinating to me. The accounts of each era representing one chapter in mankind's awe-inspiring Autobiography. In knowing who fought before us and how those battles, plagues and revolts shaped us and our own unique migration patterns, in my opinion, helps us to better understand who we are today, what shaped our core beliefs, how we've advanced..and just how much has remained the same.

Greetings from Canada.

Rose | 25 comments Hello Edith,

I noticed in addition to the interests you mention in your post, you also have an interest in fashion formulas of years past.

There are two books you may want to peruse if you haven't already, the first of which is

A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield by Amy Butler Greenfield Amy Butler Greenfield

which covers the 'discovery', trade, political strife and corruption over the quest to procure and control the supply of "the perfect red" dye, derived from Cochineal.

The second book I'd recommend is the classic

Medieval Life Manners, Customs & Dress During the Middle Ages (Annotated) by Paul Lacroix by Paul Lacroix (no photo)

which you may find interesting especially if you are interested in daily life in the Medieval period. This classic wealth-of-information book covers everything from customs, dress, trade, laws, to cooking and pastimes. A fascinating read.

Edith wrote: "Hi I'm really into books between 1066 and 1600. I am especially interested in old skills. Formula's for paint, glue, and other useful items. I own a wide range of books of this time period. Int..."

I am Spicedmama. I have an interest in American History, particularly southern (but not necessarily Civil War related). Your group seems quite active, and I was surprised to receive this type of welcome where rather than reading and moving along, I have to respond to the request of why I am interested in being a part of the group. I love genealogy and in loving it I have grown to really love history and historical topics. I am looking forward to seeing where this group leads me with respect to materials that are within my interests.

Best!

Jukka (kindlereader_85) Hello. I started to read history and historical fiction from a very early age on. One of the first books I read since being able to read was Sinuhe the Egyptian. It is truly a masterpiece centered around acient egypt. I grew to like other books by Waltari too. I read a lot of books in my childhood and teens, most of which are not included in my bookshelves on this site. After a decade long pause I have now started to read again particularly enjoying books written in 1800s and early 1900s.
