Francie Grice Hello, Sanda. Welcome to The History Book Club. This is the right place to find lots of suggestions and great discussions.

We have a variety of folders which may interest you. Why don't you start with our Home Page and look through the current book reads and discussion threads.

You may also be interested in the following discussion:

One Man Against the World: The Tragedy of Richard Nixon

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Eileen Shepherd | 1 comments Hi there, I recently retired (I was an academic librarian at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa - where I live) so now have ample time to indulge my interest in history. I enjoy reading British history, particularly medieval and earlier; pre-history and archaeology of Europe and Britain (e.g. Frances Pryor, Barry Cunliffe). I think I should have been an archaeologist?

A Special Welcome to Newcomers who introduce themselves from all over the world. We are a large global group which specializes in all things historic. We are based in the United States but our moderators represent various locations in the world and within the US.

We are gearing up for a very special Thanksgiving holiday in the United States - today in preparations, tomorrow when we celebrate with our family and friends and Friday when we try to get over the celebrations, or are spending it with family that has flown or has driven in to our various locations across the US.

Therefore if you do not get an immediate or even a delayed response from the US based moderators over the next three days - that is why.

We are preparing, cooking, eating, celebrating and having some family time.

We wish everybody across our country a very blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving where we can all be thankful for what we have no matter how big or how small - and give thanks to God for our health, our loved ones and our surroundings.

May we hope for peace around the world in the year to come and our thoughts and prayers go out to those in Paris and elsewhere who were taken from their families and loved ones too soon.

A very Happy Thanksgiving to all of your wherever you call home from all of us at the HBC (The History Book Club).

Best Wishes,

Bentley

Amanda | 2 comments Greetings! I am Amanda. I live in the USA, am married to Chris, and we have three boys and two dogs. My favorite areas of history are the ancient, medieval, and Renascence periods. I also love reading about church history.

I joined this group in hopes to be inspired to read more, which has been a challenge in recent years as I have lived a busy life. Within the last year, life has slowed down so I have more time to enjoy reading. I am looking forward to growing more in my knowledge of history and hearing other's perspective.

areas of the US. Both parents served in the Navy during WWII and have a distant connection to Jimmy Doolittle. Grew up hearing about The Great Depression. Remember seeing the McCarthy hearings on TV. 'Look', 'Life',
and 'Saturday Evening Post' piled up on the coffee table after much perusing. Find memoirs fascinating for small details but not limited to just that genre. ~~ 20th century amazes and saddens me.
Thank you for admitting me to this group of ideas.

Kate Ferguson (krferg) Hi. I'm Kate. I've always been interested in history so much so I studied it at university. I did my degree in global modern history but I wrote my dissertation on the Canadian home front during the Second World War with emphasis on crisises that occurred in the country -eg the internment of Japanese Canadians and other "hostile" citizens. I love reading in general and love reading and learning new things. Thanks for having this group.

My name is Rachel. I just joined the group today. I am from the USA, I like history because I think it gives us perspective and can help inform our decisions today. Admittedly I am a bit of a historical newb, since I figured most of my college studies on science and engineering. I joined this group because I want to be more well read on American, South American, and world history. History on a human evolutionary scale is particularly interesting to me.

Thanks, looking forward to the December 5th reading challenge!

Katia M. Davis (katiamdavis) Hi all, my name is Kat and I live in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK. I was however born in Australia. I moved over here just under 15 years ago. I studied Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology at Sydney University in Australia and used to dig up 4000 year old skeletons in the Arabian Peninsula, so I have a bit of a passion for pretty much any historical text, ancient or otherwise. I'll read historical fiction as well as non-fiction, but the fiction has to be well researched otherwise I get mad. Aside from archaeology, I am particularly interested in WWI, WWII, Victorian history, the history of medicine and disease, American Civil War, pre 20th Century LGBT history. I hope to be part of some interesting discussions.

Jess Erin (theadventuresofmsfortune) | 2 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Jess and I am interested in ancient Egyptian history. It all started when I was a little girl, afraid of mummies. When I was afraid of something, I would learn all I could about it. My fear turned into a lifelong fascination with ancient Egypt. I was fortunate enough to travel there in 2008. My favorite authors are Justin Pollard and Terry Jones- yes! The one from Monty Python. He is a Medieval History historian who writes about the funny things that happened in history. :)
Thank you!

Karen | 1 comments Hello Everyone,
My name is Karen and I love history although in some of my research I have found myself seething from what I found in the depths of my research. My love of history started early in my life because of my passion for horses. I couldn't get enough of learning about horses and where and how they got here. Most of all I became fascinated how horses have been an important partner in the history of mankind. What a revelation for some one so young at the time. Always fascinated with history, when I went back to school in my fifties (and not being in school for over thirty years), I majored in you guessed it, history. Now that I have a BA in history I plan to continue on for my masters and PhD. My interests are varied from history of the America's (Pre-Colombian and the first couple of centuries after), Eurasia, the medieval era, and ancient/archaeological history (Eurasia).I enjoy historical fiction and some if my favorites have been the "North and South" series. I just finished a historical fiction series of the Mongol Empire from Genghis to Kublai. The series "Khan Dynasty" by Conn Iggulder had everything (that is important to me!), middle ages, Eurasia and of course an ultimate horse culture.
Thank you!
Karen

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Jess. Welcome to the History book club!

I definitely second that fascination with ancient Egypt. I absolutely love everything about it.

Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out our Ancient African history tread (includes Egypt), which you can access through this link.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:
