Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Leslie. Welcome to the History book club!

You are quite a traveler. I wish I could say I do not envy you. We are so glad to have you here and we apologize for not welcoming you sooner.

Since Chile is you next destination, I suggest you check out our thread on the history of Latin America. You can access it through this link:

History of Latin America and Caribbean - Introduction

I suggest you also check out our homepage and find recommendations for the rest of your traveling to-do list. You can access it through this link:

HBC mainpage

And most importantly enjoy every step of your journey.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

My Invented Country A Nostalgic Journey Through Chile by Isabel Allende by Isabel Allende Isabel Allende

Michael Bennett | 1 comments Hello, My name is Michael Gordon Bennett. I inherited my love of history from my father. I've been fortunate to travel the world thanks to my father's Air Force career, starting in Madrid, Spain when I was just 5 years old. I've traveled to more countries than I can list here, thanks to dad, and my years running part of The Travel Channel. I currently live in Las Vegas. I have a degree in journalism and write for several blogs including The Huffington Post.
Thanks for having me.

James Lloyd | 1 comments Hello. I'm not good at introductions so I'll keep this very brief. I'm James and I live in the US. I'm mainly interested in modern history, because I just find it easier to relate to. I love reading about the World Wars, and the 20th century in general. I've also recently taken an interest in the American Civil War.

Well that's about it for me.

Crystal Klimavicz (goodreadscomcrystal_cole) | 2 comments Hello, everyone! Of the 18 grandchildren, I was the only one who would sit at my grandfather's feet and ask him questions about his past, particularly his time spent in WWII.

I love learning about history, and hearing stories from those who have the most of it... people who lived during the Great Depression, WWI, WWII and more...

With regards to historical novels, Tai-pan, by James Clavell, is one of my favorite epic novels, as well as The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. Reading, writing, running and skipping off to the beach in those moments in between, are what make me the happiest in this world.

Robby Hamlin My name is Robert Hamlin and I joined Goodreads a year ago on a friend's suggestion. Only in the last couple of months have I spent much time on the site. History was a dreaded course in my school years, but no longer. Maybe the lack of interest I had was the emphasis on memorizing battles and the names of generals, but most everything about history interests me now. It is such a fine privilege to have good enough eyesight to read, and a handy little gadget (a laptop) to access "everything I always wanted to know but was afraid to ask." I have called several locales along the Atlantic coast my home, and am sort of retired in South Carolina for the past nine years now. Looking ahead to learn more about the world we live in, people, places, and things here in the HBC.

Brett | 21 comments Hello! My name is Brett. I live in the US and I am a high school history teacher. I actually joined the group back when it was private, but I left because I was unable to put in the time ( I was in school at the time). But I have graduated and I have a bit more time now. :) I love medieval and Renaissance history, inter-war period stuff, imperialism, WWI and II, women's history, civil rights issues, history of medicine and disease, ancient history, and recently I have been getting into African and Latin American history.

Brett | 21 comments John wrote: "Brett, what aspects of WWI and II are you interested in?"

Russia especially in WWII. I feel like they do not get enough credit for WWII. I also like learning about all the art that was stolen in WWII. For WWI I like studying about how it started and ended, and how it was so different from anything they had seen or experienced and how it effected the war and it the outcome.

I find the basic political and social trends in these more simple ancient societies are easier to disentangle than in modern societies. I am most interested in topics related to "the few and the many" and the interaction of political/economic/military trends. I'm glad to have learned about this group and enjoy the posts.

I'm Kenmuel, a second year law student. I've joined your History Group with grand enthusiasm and a great crave of learning history matters. As a law student, history it's very important for me. I deeply care about subjects like minorities, racial equality, American history regarding politics and constitutional development, of course international relations.

I hope to find the best book tittles here, so I can learn the most.

I'm currently reading "The case against the Supreme Court" by Erwin Chemerinsky and so far has been a good book.

PS. English it's not, by any means, my first language. So pardon my errors! :)

Sharon (sqin) | 4 comments Hello!

My name is Sharon, and I am from California, USA. To be honest, history was my least favorite subject in school. But as I went through graduate school, traveled to different parts of the world, and now working as a full-time professional, I realized how important history is. Like George Santayana once said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I don't want to sound silly in a conversation or make bad decisions in life and work simply because of my lack of knowledge in history. I did not read much history books (non-fictions) in the past and I do not know much history, and that's why I'm here. I hope this group can provide some guidance as I go through my journey of history self-study, and that the historians / history buffs here can give me some recommendations on good and worth reading history books.

My subject of interest can be anything: sports, pop culture, movies, music, arts, biographies or autobiographies of leaders and famous people, etc.

Thank you very much!

Happy to be here and look forward to interacting with everyone!

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Caitlin. Welcome to the History book club!

Since you are a fiction reader, why don't you start looking for interesting topics through historical fiction. Pick one book (maybe you already have a favorite) and look for non-fiction book about the period described there.

Also, you may want to scroll through our homepage and see if you can find anything of interest among various threads we have here. You can access it through this link:

If you want to see what our historical fiction-loving members recommend, check out this thread:

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author.
