Zippy (navyman135) | 1 comments Hello, my name is Craig and I live in North Texas. I have had a passion for reading ever since I was a child. The majority of my favorite books to read are non fiction especially history (although I do read the occasional Stephen King). Another interest is classical literature. I'm a big fan of Dickens, Steinbeck and others. World War II has been an especial interest for me including the Holocaust that went with it. As a former navy intelligence specialist I enjoy all things military and weapons related books and magazines.

Julie (scrapsofhistory) Hello Everyone, my name is Julie and I live in Southeast Kansas with my husband and four kids. I am a high school history teacher and have a passion for reading, and history. My favorite time readings have been about the presidents and other world leaders, individuals who revolution the world, or people who make a difference in people's lives. I also enjoy reading about daily life of average people all around the world. I'm also up for a good revolution now and then, as long as the cause is worthy. When reading about a war, I like to focus on the social, political, or economic aspects rather than the weapons and tactics used.

I can't wait to get involved in this group and have missed discussions with other history enthusiasts.

message 353: by Erich (new)

Erich Eipert | 1 comments I’m Erich and I’m a reader. Sounds like an AA introduction, doesn’t it! Anyway, as a new member I’m looking forward to participation here and there. By way of background, I've been reading for decades. Was once a scientist, so I like science and like to read about science topics of all kinds. But not all the time. Although most sciences—even if they study events in the past—aim for the future, I found long ago that I also liked to examine the past as an end in itself. Hence, I relish books that make that past come alive. Maybe I missed my calling and should have become a historian.

Just about everyone with an interest in history realizes much of history is unavoidably about war. War is ugly, as anyone who’s had a taste of it knows (I experienced a little of it in Vietnam, and my parents got more than just a taste of it on the losing side in Europe during World War II). Despite the brutality of war, or maybe because of it, war is a fascinating topic and I’ll admit, I’m drawn to it. Drawn enough to read about it, and drawn enough to join discussions about it here.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Hello and welcome, Craig. Thanks for the great introduction and thank you for your military service. You might want to try the following link which has myriad topics about your favorite subject.

World War II

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

The Story of the Human Body Evolution, Health and Disease by Daniel Lieberman by Daniel Lieberman (no photo)

Additionally, if you mention a particular author, please add their link as well.

Stephen King Stephen King
Charles Dickens Charles Dickens
John Steinbeck John Steinbeck

Alister Aldridge Hello ! My name is Alister and I'm a History student in France.
If I am interested in every time period and topics I enjoy very much the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, mostly European history. To be more specific one of my favourite topic is the relation between the aristocracies, people and the monarchies.

Lately most of the books I read were in French but I can easily read books in English as well.

Sam (purplesky36) Hi, I'm Sara; I am a design engineer who loves reading speculative fiction and non-fiction history. I'm currently interested in Ancient History, the early 20th century and social histories but I am not usually picky about periods or topics as long as it's a well written book. :) I just finished reading The Poisoner's Handbook:Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York and I just started The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt. And let's see if I can do these citations properly from my phone...

R. Matthias | 1 comments Hi Folks, I'm a Canadian academic librarian who majored in history while at university. I love anything historical: historical fiction, biographies, traditional "history books," anything at all. In terms of time period and region, I'm all over the map although I have a weakness for Late Medieval and Enlightenment era topics. I guess what draws me to history is that you have all the aspects of a gripping story with the added benefit of learning about the world you live in.

I've always loved history, although my readings are really poor concerning this category. I read about the Lebanese civil war, the Great War, and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. However, I usually watch documentaries since I lack English books. I hope to find a lot much more about history with you guys, and I also hope that you could post a soft copy from the books you will read. I'm interested in political history, and political theory. Further, I really got excited when I saw you guys reading On politics by Alan Ryan I wish I joined you earlier so we could discuss it together. Enjoy your readings.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Leni and I am a Norwegian currently living in Wales. I have had an interest in the Ancient world ever since childhood, and have branched out quite a bit since. I studied both history and history of religion briefly at university, but my main fields are English and philosophy. That said I enjoy reading both fiction and non-fiction from a wide range of centuries and cultures.

I have lately taken an interest in the Renaissance, a period I know far too little about. So I was pleased to find a History book with a focus on non-fiction. (I like historical novels that are historical by virtue of being written in the past. I'm less keen on the contemporary "Historical Novel" as a genre. I make and exception for non-fictional accounts given a fictional coating by a historian with strong literary qualities.)

J.R.A. Ortiens Stratzmann Hello - my name is Jules. I am 22 years old and I am in my second year of the bachelor Arts & Culture at Maastricht University (the Netherlands). Also, Maastricht is the town I was born and raised. This summer I will move to Tartu, Estonia, the former Soviet Union. As I am interested in the history of the European family and sexual culture, I am at the moment very focused on Russian patriarchal history and its differences/similarities with European patriarchism (if Russia is seen as something separated from Europe of course). Moreover, I am interested in anything that has to do with European history, politics, gender studies, philosophy and sociology, and to a smaller extend the same counts for the New World. This month I will have little time, but I am looking forward to join your reading challenges from 2016 on! I see that you have already a political history marathon going on - I hope it will be somehow possible to join your activity in the middle of it. :)

I am also interested in medieval and Victorian England, the Mayflower, the American Revolution, and women in the Middle East.

Bernard Wilkin | 1 comments Hi everybody,

My name is Bernard and I'm Belgian (although I live in England). I am a professional historian teaching war history at university. I was born in a family of historians (father, mother and brother... didn't have a chance in life) and have always been interested in the past. I am particularly keen on Napoleonic history, the 19th century and the First World War but also read about other periods of time.

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Jonathan. Welcome to the History book club!

That's one awesome legacy and so much history. We are glad to have you here and we apologize for not welcoming you immediately.

I suggest you to check out our homepage and see if you can find anything of interest. You can access it through this link:

HBC mainpage

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

My Early Life, 1874-1904 by Winston S. Churchill by Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill
