The subject of my thesis is unionism from the founding fathers to the civil war. I love early American History the most however I also enjoy books on the enlightenment, books about the Cold War, books about the Civil Rights Movement, books about Lyndon Johnson, books about diplomacy, books about Immigration, and books about Economics. My top five favorite historians are Joseph Ellis, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Richard Brookhiser, David McCullough, and H.W. Brands.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the group and new to Goodreads! Glad to be here, and excited to figure out how to make connections on this site.

I'm a word nerd, and a historical fiction addict. I'm a stay at home mother of four young kids, so reading is the only escape I get most days. I love all historical fiction, but have a particularly special place in my heart for World War II. I was a Russian minor in college, and spent time studying in Ukraine, so I've spent a lot of time studying and reading about the Great Patriotic War from the perspective of the former Soviet Union.

Self Promotion excluded

I currently live in Florida with my husband and children. I look forward to learning from all you history buffs, and finding new books to read!

Glad you joined us, Andres. This is the place for the avid history buff. We have many topics for you to peruse and we have discussions on lots of different books. Hope you can join in.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Jhankar | 1 comments Hello Everyone!

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group.

I'm Jhankar from India and a lawyer by profession. I've always been intrigued by history, not just Indian but also international and understanding the psyche of people back then, both the good and the bad guys. I'm however wary of the way history is projected today to suit the political agenda. This group, however, seemed to be a perfect platform to help me in the right direction.

Look forward to reading with you lovely people.

Warm Regards,
Jhankar

Lisa M. Hello everyone,

My name is Lisa, I am 17 years old and I'm from Belgium. I study archaeology at the university of Ghent, which is the beautiful medieval city I grew up in. As you may expect of an arhaeology student, I do love history! Other things I enjoy include: art, music, science, sporting and of course reading! Unfortunately, it is hard to find the time to read lately because of my studies.
The reason I joined this group is to meet other people that have the same interests as I do and also to learn new interesting things about history.

Furthermore I'd like to apologize in advance for any mistakes, English is not my mother tongue, nor my second language. But if you notice any mistakes, you may always bring my attention to them!

Patricia (patricia_bjaaland_welch) | 1 comments Hi. I'm Patricia, American by birth but have lived in Singapore for the past 20 years where I work as a senior docent at the Asian Civilisations Museum, guiding and training/teaching our new docents. (I've also lived in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Oslo, Norway.)

I used to teach Asian history & religion at Boston University and my love is obviously Asian history, but I've been branching out to other geographies as I become more and more curious as to how China interacted with the Roman Empire, Central Asian influences on SE Asian art, etc. I finance my love of travel by being a 'specialist speaker' on cruise ships in the region, which enables me to keep up to date in my research and visit new sites. Most recently, I visited Sicily with an Italian friend and was totally enchanted.

Like most of the group's members, I am an avid reader, usually reading 3 or 4 books at the same time so I can pick up just the right one to suit a mood or allotted time (there are 'bus' books and 'bed' books and "I need to be at my computer when reading this" books).

I started up a non-fiction book group with some friends a few years ago and thought the Goodreads history group would be a good next step for me as I'm always looking for recommendations.

I am an Americanist (as much by accident as by any particular fascination with the U.S.—I can't speak any other languages, unfortunately, so that sort of limits my geographic focus), trying to include elements of environmental history, history of race, labor history, and the global history of capitalism into my studies and my work. I don't have much time to read outside of my classes presently, but I'm always interested in hearing what people think about history they are reading and talking about history in general.

Dale Pearl (hollowman777) | 2 comments Hi my name is Dale. For most of my life I have been an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy. Recently though I discovered that history is not only for more interesting but in most cases stranger than anything fiction could come up with.
I particularly like history with a twist. The Romanov sisters and how Russia's final tzar was overthrown. How a wrong turn in a vehicle led to WW I. Napoleon's haemorrhoids as a possibility to his inexplicable loss at Waterloo.
In all honestly though I love just about all genre of books once my OCD kicks in. Hopefully this group can steer me through the jungle of historical books and memoirs towards the best of the best. I am also looking forward to contributing my suggestions and input in the upcoming months as well.
Thanks for having me here and for the excellent group.

Hi,

I am Nadia and I am 29 years old. I live in Montreal. I am a software engineering student. History was my favorite subject in high school, and I would like to feed that interest by reading history books.

I don't have any favorite books to list as I haven't read anything other than assigned textbook readings. In school though I was always intriuged by recent Western European history, WWI and WWII. I would like to branch out though, and I am hoping that by being a part of this group I will be able to widen my horizons and read books that I might not have heard of otherwise.

I am looking forward to turning the pages!

Assaph Mehr | 1 comments Hi All,

I've always loved history, though I tend to read primarily historical fiction. I supplement it with non-fiction history works, as I find that just increases my enjoyment of well-researched novels.

I've always loved history, probably since I first started reading Asterix in grade school. These days what I read is a bit more mature ;)

My favourite period is probably anything up will WWI - as long as it's well researched. I'm partial to ancient Rome, and I'm planning on reading up on 19th century Russia for a future project.

I'm here mostly to lurk, but I'll jump in if I have anything to meaningful add.

Cheers!

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Hi all! I am Athira and I am from India but staying in Virginia. I love history but just don't read enough of it.

Couple of years ago, I started reading and listening to more nonfiction, focusing mostly on narrative nonfiction. Then I started reading more subject-focused books, such as The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease, Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, and Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation.

Now I'm looking to read the books that I consider most challenging for me - books about important historical events - the wars, certain specific Middle Age time periods, even events going very far back in time. Hopefully, I can discover some wonderful reads over here! Excited to start exploring!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) A warm welcome, Athira. So glad you decided us to join us and further your interest in history. We have just the topic that will meet your current interest.

Ancient History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mentioned should look:

The Story of the Human Body Evolution, Health and Disease by Daniel Lieberman by Daniel Lieberman (no photo)
Stuff Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things by Randy O. Frost by Randy O. Frost Randy O. Frost
The Emperor of All Maladies A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee by Siddhartha Mukherjee Siddhartha Mukherjee

rosianna (rosiannas) | 1 comments Hi all,

I'm Rosi, from Indonesia. I work in development and I studied the same topic for my master degree last year in UK. I only spent one year there to be amazed to find out that there are lots of Indonesian history-related books that I've never encountered before piling up in the university library. I then start reading more historical books, not only about Indonesia but also Asia, in general. Moreover, I've been an avid fictions reader for a long time but then I find a number of interesting fiction books with Indonesia history as their background. I now find interests in pursuing a research on how development is narrated in fictions. This is only a personal research for now, but who knows I may be able to pursue a doctoral research on the topic. So, I would love to expand my reading lists by joining this group, and hopefully to contribute in the future!

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 10 comments Hello History lovers, I live in Queensland, Australia. I have no qualifications in history but discovered the importance of history while reading my favourite genre, historical fiction. I am not a fan of Science Fiction because the stories are based on speculation of what might happen in the future.

I think we need to understand our past to make better decisions for our future. I also like Memoirs but pure History books can be a little dry for me depending, of course, on the author's writing style. I also quite like Historical Fantasy.

Thank you to the Moderators for this Group.

Dragos A big hello to everyone here. My name is Dragos, I know it's a pain to spell it, so you can call me Steve :-) (and by the way my name is not connected to the word "dragon" :P) and I live in Romania.
I have three big hobbies during my spare time: my baby daughter :-), reading and playing video games.
I like history (ancient history) and history fiction and I have an obsession for ancient Rome, ancient Greek states, Egypt and Babylon.
Joining this group would enable me to discover new books, what you all read and share experiences.
Glad to hear news from you all!

PS. I'm a beginner with goodreads.com, so I really hope I haven't done anything wrong when posting this "Hello World" message :-)

What is wrong with your name Dragos? It is easy to spell. Have you seen some of those Welsh names? I want to call you Dragos. I am a new member too. Dragos sounds Spanish to me so it is interesting that you come from Romania..

Dragos, I love Goodreads. This site has opened up new discoveries for me and Goodreads has taken over from TV for my relaxation during evenings. I have added so many books to my "to read" list, all of which I really want to read, that I am afraid that at 66yrs old, I will run out of time to read them, especially as I add new ones to my list almost daily!

P.S. What did you name your little daughter? No need for you to say, I am just curious, being a Grandmother to five littleies.

Hi Laureen and thank you for your kind welcome :-)! Yes, indeed, I have the same very pleasant surprise with always discovering more and more new books I would like to read.
Regarding my name, I can confirm you that Romania is somehow related to Italy, France, Spain and Portugal - our countries were conquered by the Romans and were part of the Roman Empire. As a matter of fact, the Romanian language is so close to Italian that we can understand whole phrases in Italian, without actively studying the Italian. Also the grammar is somehow similar (all these language are called Romance language - please kindly find an article in Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance...). So your intuition was correct :-)!
Regarding my daughter, her name is Erika-Alice, which is a quite common name in my country :-).
All the best and keep in touch,
Dragos

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 10 comments Thank you Dragos, your comments are very interesting. My Grandfather on
my father's side emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy many years ago. Unfortunately, I never learnt the language. My tongue could never do that trill. HaHa.

You have given your daughter a very fine, beautiful name. We had a Romanian girl work for us. She was a magnificent seamstress and very beautiful. Her name was Magda. I will look out for your reading list as I hope you will mine.

Ciao, Laureen.
