What a nice introduction, Isabella. We welcome you to The History Book Club. We have a variety of folders which may interest you. There are many topics for you to peruse and we have discussions on lots of different books. Hope you can join in.

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

1984 by George Orwell by George Orwell George Orwell
The Name of God is Mercy by Pope Francis by Pope Francis Pope Francis

Michael Darmody | 1 comments My name is Michael Darmody. I'm a leadership development consultant who loves to read books on many topics, but especially history. I believe we truly need to understand where we've been to reflect on how things may have been done differently for better results. Humans have short term memories so we tend to repeat our mistakes, but at least history books are there for us if we will uses them. Some of my faves include Team of Rivals, A Brief History of Almost Everything, The Ascent of Money, Peter the Great, and Medici. All fascinating

Gillian Wiseman (gillianwiseman) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Gillian (not Jillian); I'm a Reference Librarian, in a busy branch library of an urban Texas library. I love to read, obviously, and history is one of my pleasures, but I also purchase history titles for the Adult Collection, so as I, for example, remove older books in a subject area, I am always looking for new, high-quality books on specific topics, whether they be broad or narrow. I look forward to asking for, receiving, and sharing good advice!

Lindsay Chervinsky (lchervinsky) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Lindsay. I'm a historian by training and trade, but it's also my passion. I primarily read history books on American history, especially on the presidency, politics, and military history. (I do read fiction for fun too, especially historical fiction!).

One of my favorite books is The Hemingses of Monticello An American Family by Annette Gordon-Reed by Annette Gordon-Reed. I also really love Affairs of Honor National Politics in the New Republic by Joanne B. Freeman by Joanne Freeman.

Thanks!

George Fairbrother Thanks for the opportunity to join and contribute. For fun, I dabble in a few biographies about identities of 20th century America. In particular the early moguls of Hollywood and the music industry, and presidential politics up to and including President Reagan. In terms of historical fiction, at the moment my three authors of choice are Patrick O'Brian, Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.

Professionally my interest is 19th and 20th Century Britain, and I'm currently contracted for a series of political/historical fiction novels with a UK publisher.

Thanks again, and it's nice to be part of the group.

My name is Bill. I enjoy reading non-fiction History, national security, military history, and ancient history. Studying history as it pertains to national security is my avocation. The most compelling book on my list is The Proud Tower by Barbara Tuchman. I also enjoy philosophy and poetry.

On the fiction front, I enjoy literature such as Faulkner. If I Forget Thee Jerusalem is one of my favorite books. Last but not least, I enjoy spy novels like John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Solder, Spy.

Thank you for allowing me to join your group.

Jason Hello and thanks for having this group on Goodreads. I am originally from upstate New York and I have traveled in or lived in 60 different countries. I like studying the histories of the places I have been to (Asia, Middle East, Europe, North America). My primary preferences are for modern history (19th century to present), social and cultural history, and political conflicts and upheavals. I have a strong interest in countries that have been written about less; I would rather read a book about Laos or Indonesia than a book about Japan or China for instance. But I also do not limit myself to too narrow a range. Hopefully by joining this group I can find good discussions and book recommendations for the things I like reading about. Otherwise, I am also interested in science, literature, art, cooking, and travel narratives. I also have a strong interest in counter-cultures, subcultures and groups of people that have fallen outside the boundaries of mainstream society. I am definitely not interested in conspiracy theories (real conspiracies are OK though) or revisionist history unless they are written about as sociological studies.
