History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

Washington A Life by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow Ron Chernow

It has really added a new dimension to my reading and I am really excited to delve into topics that I find interesting (i.e., Women's History, Soviet Union, British Monarchy, Renaissance Period to name a few!).

I look forward to interacting with you all and for all the book recommendations :)

Jim Yarin | 5 comments Hi, I joined some months ago, but never introduced myself. I live not far from Lexington and Concord, Mass. I want to read an eclectic selection of history to broaden my horizons, of the nonfiction kind. I'm partial to Civil War, circus history, frontier America, and Jewish community histories.

Vinisha Olivia Pinto | 1 comments Hi, my name is Vinisha Pinto. To be honest with you guys I'm a novice when it comes to history. I've enjoyed reading books for the entirety of my life and this year I've decided to explore new genres. History has always been something I wanted to delve into but found it daunting, I guess it's better late than never. I'm glad I've got to be a part of this group and I look forward to reading some great books.

Joseph Hello from Texas. My name is Joseph. I am in my 30s and have found reading to learn a lot of fun! I enjoy reading primarily non-fiction and biographies/memoirs. I was a knuckle-head in school and didn't give US or World History its fair shake. Now I am playing catch-up.

Gina Buonaguro (janiceandgina) | 1 comments Hi - my name is Gina and I am a historical fiction reader in Toronto, Canada. My favorite historical eras: the Renaissance, any time in Italy, WW2, American Revolution, Tudor England, and ancient Rome and Greece, though I likely would read anything historical! I just finished The Gown by Jennifer Robson (England in the aftermath of WW2) and am currently reading The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker (Trojan War). Thanks for having me!

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

Lately I have been reading historical true crime and anything on the beginning of forensics and what we would now call crime scene work. I really like all of but the top right now would be primary civilizations, early 20th century, WW2 and I’m starting to explore local history.

I have always loved reading nonfiction and fiction, starting with the Classics Illustrated series when I was a wee lad. I have a litigation practice, so my pleasure reading tends to be sporadic and reserved for the early morning hours. I usually have one nonfiction and one fiction going simultaneously. I have already been inspired to read a number of recommendations by the HBC, and look forward to many, many more this year and beyond.

I also love reading about politics, and often that comes into play in books about history. I’m currently most interested in learning more about the history of Asia. I work at the US office of a Korean company, and most of my coworkers and people I connect with are from or live in (South) Korea and China. As we talk about growing up, news of the day, etc. I realize I am grossly unfamiliar with the history of that region, and would love to get a better understanding.

Mohammad Al Refaei | 1 comments Hello, my name is Mohammad, I am from Syria. Although that I am a medical doctor, history is one of my favorite subjects because it tells our story, the humankind story which is with no doubt an epic one. I personally prefer four aspects of history, the first is science history because science is somehow the language of the natural world, and those who understand it will discern the mysteries of the universe; thus, the history of science help us understand the image of the universe the past generations had in there minds. The second aspect is the history of pre-history! I love reading about this era because it is a story written by the pioneers, our ancestors. The third one is the WWII, it is definitely a blink of an eye compared to the entire human history but it shaped our modern world. The last one is the history of religions. Religion (including all of its form, atheism, agnosticism etc) was and is in the core of most of the historical events.
Looking forward to read great history stuff with you.

Welcome to our group, Radana! We're very happy you joined us from the Czech Republic. We have many different topics and books being discussed here so please feel free to explore and jump in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in this topic:

China

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

SPQR A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard by Mary Beard Mary Beard
