Hailee | 277 comments It was mentioned a few months ago but I was just wondering whether people were still interested in doing a buddy read of Don Quixote some time in 2017?

message 653: by Pink (last edited Dec 13, 2016 03:27PM) (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Abbey, yep that's right. There will be discussion threads already set up for previous group reads and these can be used to comment for buddy reads too. That way we don't end up with multiple threads for the same book.

Here's a link to the Pride and Prejudice discussions https://www.goodreads.com/group/comme...

Ellen B I will join a buddy read of Don Quixote. It's been on my TBR for way too long, and now it's on my Bingo card. I'm thinking I'd be ready for it by March at the earliest.

Great :-) March would probably be the earliest I could manage it as well and there is also a buddy read of The Count of Monte Christo tentitively planned for May and I don't want to be reading both of those at the same time but we can finalise the timing later. I just wanted to gage if there was still any interest.

message 656: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments ditto Don Quixote
March would be fine, but I'm flexible...

Great, the more merrier :-)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments I'm a maybe for Don Quixote. ;-)

message 659: by Sue (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments Don Quixote was on my Bingo card for 2017 too but I decided to start it now after starting on The Three Musketeers and it referenced Don Qixote right off the bat. Absolutely loving it. It's passionate, funny and just plain fun! I'm reading the Edith Grossman translation and can't imagine a better one for a first reading. It flows so easy. I'm a little over half way through book one.

message 660: by Brina (new)

Brina A lot of us have The Scarlet Pimpernel on our women's century challenge. Anyone interested in a buddy read?

Great, when we firm up a date hopefully you'll have time to join :-)

I'm glad you're enjoying the Edith Grossman translation as that is the one I bought. I did a bit of research on the internet before and heard it was good but hadn't talked to anyone I knew who had physically read it.

Shout out to Edith Grossman! I tried Don Q. multiple times with older translations and never got through it. Grossman's translation is the one that taught me to love Cervantes. Also, the footnotes are excellent.

Hi Brina. I'd be interested in reading that book. When were you thinking of starting it?

message 665: by Brina (new)

Brina I'm happy to read on the next month or so if that works for you.

I'm in for the Scarlet Pimpernel too.

Amanda R (fairyteapot) | 86 comments Would anyone like to buddy read A Tale of Two Cities in February?

message 670: by Ellen (new)

Ellen B I think I might join the Scarlet Pimpernel buddy read too. Must check if it fits one of my open bingo squares...I think it might. ;)

message 671: by Phil (new)

Phil J | 621 comments Darren wrote: "Phil wrote: "Darren wrote: "long shot, but would anybody be interested in a buddy read of Darconville’s Cat?
Darconville’s Cat by Alexander Theroux."

Finally got my copy today and read the front matter. It's something else. Put me down for starting this book immediately and finishing it never. It looks like a book that will choose its own time.

message 672: by Paula W (new)

Paula W Those of you who were interested in the War and Peace buddy read can message me with a timeframe that is good for you. I think early- to mid-February will work for me as a starting point but would like to hear from anyone else and accommodate as many people as possible. If I remember correctly, there were several people interested, and there are discussion threads already out there so BONUS!! Happy reading, everyone.

I've got a friend of mine who lives in San Francisco bringing me a copy across the Pond when she comes to visit at New Year (it's quite difficult/expensive to get hold of in the UK) - can't wait to get it in my grubby little mitts! :oD

message 675: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 468 comments Would anyone else be interested in reading The Maltese Falcon as a buddy read in February? Its definitely not going to win the poll.
It was done as a group read before so there is a thread, but it would be more fun to do with other people.

message 676: by Angie (new)

Angie | 496 comments I would be interested in The Maltese Falcon.

message 677: by Brina (new)

Brina If others read it I will. More motivated to read as a group.

message 678: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 468 comments Angie wrote: "I would be interested in The Maltese Falcon."

Cool. It seemed to generate interest well enough in the nominations thread, just not enough for the polls so I hoped there would be interest in a BR.
When in the month would work better for you early or mid? We can always adjust the closer we get, but a plan might get more people involved.

message 679: by Brina (new)

Brina Beginning of the month please. Mid month I am reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn with Celeste :)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments ditto The Maltese Falcon - my copy just arrived in the post the other day!
The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

Good!

Sounds like we should have a good group for this!

Pink | 5491 comments Shall I add The Maltese Falcon to the list for Feb?

How about Darconvile's Cat? Le Mort d'Arthur? Don Quixote? A Tale of two Cities? War and Peace?

Sorry if I'm losing track, but I can't see any definite plans or dates for these at the moment. We can decide a timeframe later, but just give me a shout if you want anything else added now!

Yes, please add The Maltese Falcon to the list for February, Pink.
Thanks!

I think for Le Morte d'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table we are currently leaning towards later March.

I'd like to join in on a Buddy Read for Le Morte d'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table. March works for me.

Great! The more the merrier.
Paula W was the one to bring it up. She's doing War & Peace in February, which is why late March is our tentative plan for this one.

message 691: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Ok, so I'll add The Maltese Falcon for Feb with links to the existing discussion thread and Le Mort d'Arthur for March, but I won't create a discussion thread for that yet.

It sounds like Paula W wants to start War and Peace in Feb, does this suit other people, or do those interested want a later start? The threads are already there anyway (I'm currently reading and commenting as I go) so you can read it whenever it suits you. I won't include it on the buddy read list until I know a definite month to put it under.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) | 757 comments I'm okay for February.

message 693: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 52 comments I would like to join the Buddy read for the Maltese Falcon. It has been on my TBR list for a long time. Would be more likely to buckle down and read it if there was a good discussion.

message 694: by Renee (new)

Renee | 727 comments I'll probably join in The Maltese Falcon buddy read also. It's on my list for next year, and has been on my shelf for too long unread.

message 695: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments Pink - re Darconville’s Cat I think there was a general leaning towards later in the year, although after I get my copy in my hands next week I may not be able to restrain myself for too long!
will keep you informed... ;o)

message 696: by Amanda (new)

Amanda R (fairyteapot) | 86 comments Pink, no buddy found for A Tale of Two Cities. I guess I'll read it on my own!

message 697: by Pink (new)

message 698: by Nell (last edited Jan 13, 2017 02:02PM) (new)

Nell Beaudry McLachlan (lightfoxing) I'm really into participating in a buddy read for Darconville's Cat some time this year! It's on my bingo list for a 'new to me' author (and it was recommended by a good friend!).

message 699: by Alexw (new)

Alexw | 81 comments I would like to buddy read Advise and Consent by Allan Drury-is a Pulitzer Prize winner and very pertinent to todays headlines as is about a controversial secretary of state appointment and the intricacies of the vote in the US Senate. Is quite a long book at 673 pages

message 700: by Sarah (last edited Jan 17, 2017 01:22PM) (new)

Sarah | 468 comments We've had interest in the nominations, but apparently not enough for the polls for Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. Its going to lose the March polls (its currently in 4th, with the book in first having nearly double the number of votes it currently has).
Since its fairly short, would there be interest in doing it as a buddy read?
