message 2057: by Dan (last edited Jul 30, 2021 07:10PM) (new)

Dan | 95 comments I propose a buddy read for At The Sign Of The Cat And Racket by Honoré de Balzac for August 16-31, 2021. It is the first work in Balzac's long series, La Comedie Humaine. At 21,322 words in the free translation provided by Gutenberg this work is by definition a novella, hence the half-month's reading time proposal. An old (but probably adequate) translation of the work is available for free on Kindle and for free for those comfortable side-loading from Gutenberg.

A group of us just finished reading Père Goriot as July's group read. By my count about as many of us did not care for the work as did. In any event only one character repeats from Pere Goriot, and that is Marshall Carigliano. He was a very minor character in that book. He lives in Paris around 1820 and hosted a ball that was attended by most of the principal characters. He is married to the Duchess de Carigliano, whom if I am not mistaken has a female lover, the Duchess de Berry. The two may just be friends; it's hard to know from what was given. We know nothing else of the Cariglianos, at least not from Pere Goriot.

I think reading this novella together as a buddy read could be an interesting experience for us.

message 2060: by George P. (last edited Aug 13, 2021 12:49PM) (new)

George P. | 422 comments There were a lot of votes in the August poll for The Saga of Gösta Berling by Selma Lagerlöf. I would like to read this before the end of the year.
Who would like to buddy-read it? It's not too long, 360 pgs.
Kindle has translations to English for $1 to $5 (more for the newer translation). Betterworldbooks.com has at least one paper copy for about $7 incl shipping in US. Librivox.com has a volunteer-read e-audiobook free (probably of the older Flach translation).

Natalie (nsmiles29) | 842 comments Hey friends! I know we were planning on starting War and Peace in July but I haven't seen anyone commenting on the threads. Since I started at the beginning of the year I'm about 60% through. I'm slowly going through and writing my thoughts on the previous discussions. Was anyone else able to start? I'd love to discuss with people! :D

I would also like to read The Saga of Gösta Berling, but I'm not able to add anything to my schedule until November...which might be far too long to wait for the rest of you. I will be interested in seeing what you all think of it, though, if you buddy read before then.

I cant start until after September 17th but I'd love to buddy read Frankenstein. Its one of those "I know I read it but cant remember it, books. It would count towards my Fall monster mash too. I'm sure there's a thread for it already so we could discuss it there instead of creating another. Lemme know

Natalie (nsmiles29) | 842 comments I might be up for reading Frankenstein again a little bit later this year. I’ll watch and see when you guys start and if I’m able to jump in, I will. 😊

message 2069: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1088 comments I plan on reading Elizabeth Barrett Browning's novel length poem, Aurora Leigh 361pp, in November and was checking to see if there was any interest here. While it is classic, I am not sure how popular it might be with the group. Are any interested as a serious buddy read?

message 2070: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5197 comments Sam, if you should still be interested in January, I will read with you Aurora Leigh.

I have set up the thread for Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles, which begins on September 15th. Be glad to have anyone who is interested join.

Katy, when you have a chance could you add it to the schedule. Thanks.

Sam | 1088 comments Cynda wrote: "Sam, if you should still be interested in January, I will read with you Aurora Leigh."

Thanks Cynda, that would be fine. My object would be to see if we could find more participants who would welcome the challenge. Between feminists and classic completists we should be able to find a couple more by then. In anticipation I will read Sonnets From The Portugese a month or so earlier.

Terry | 2381 comments Lori and I will be reading The Good Earth as a Buddy read, possibly in September. I was trying to recall if someone else expressed interest in joining us. Was there anyone interested and was September workable?

Also, Lori and I also plan to read Look Homeward Angel in October. Would anyone like to join us?
