message 1801: by Brina (new)

Brina Great, Jesus. Anyone else? I’m also reading in the Tracks buddy read so what time would be good for you to start?

message 1802: by Jesus (new)

Jesus | 37 comments As long as it's in December I don't have any problem starting when it's best for you.

message 1803: by Brina (new)

Brina I was going to read in January but can move things around to December. I’ll know by the end of the week about library holds and can plan accordingly.

message 1804: by Jesus (new)

Jesus | 37 comments January also works fine for me if you prefer.

message 1805: by Brina (new)

Brina I’d prefer January. Let’s see if anyone else wants to join us.

Nidhi Kumari | 246 comments I will join in January.

These have been added to the buddy read schedule :)

Margaret | 0 comments I'll join the buddy read for Waiting for the Barbarians!

message 1809: by Brina (new)

Brina Already six people for Waiting for the Barbarians. This is going to be a great discussion.

message 1810: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5197 comments Phrodrick and Jesus and anyone else, still interested in reading Orlando by Virginia Woolf starting December 15th?

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 51 comments Cynda wrote: "Thanks Phrodrick for responding. Maybe start Dec 15? I would rather finish the short novel by the end of the year. Two weeks is good. Does starting Dec 15th and ending Dec 31st work?"

I lost track on the intended start date and am well into Orlando.
IS there still going to be a buddy read next week?

If it helps it is a much easier read than I remembered.

Let's do it then! I will ask for a thread now.

message 1813: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 386 comments I´d like to read Orlando, but won´t manage in December, sorry.

Cynda | 5197 comments Michaela wrote: "I´d like to read Orlando, but won´t manage in December, sorry."

December is a very changeable month for many for a variety of reasons. Michaela next year I hope to continue reading some Virginia Woolf--a few more selections--so keep a lookout here if you are interested. Be well.

message 1815: by Jesus (new)

Jesus | 37 comments I forgot about Orlando, but yes, I think I will be able to join. Maybe I will start a little bit later than the 15th, but I will try to catch up!

message 1818: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5197 comments Mods, may Irphen and I have a buddy read thread for The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole to start January 15th and to last for one month? As usual, anyone and everyone is welcome to join in. This is a good read for those who appreciate Jane Austen, would like to read the horrid novels but can't commit to 500-page novels. The text of Otranto is just over 100 pages.

The Golden Days (The Story of the Stone, #1) by Cao Xueqin
I'm deffo reading it come what may!

message 1821: by Brina (new)

Brina There were a number of people who wanted to read The Street in February but it did poorly in the polls. Who’s up for a buddy read?

Cynda | 5197 comments Mods, may George P and I have a buddy read thread for The Waves by Virginia Woolf. We would like to read from Feb 1st to Feb 28th? Anyone interested is welcome to join in.

It's been a while since I tried reading Woolf - would be nice to join you.
However, I do not know how swarmed I'll be by february. Everything here is on lockdown till the end of the month and it is likely that this situation will continue in february (until we reach the indicator of 50/100 000 per week). But if the lockdown is lifted I'll have to work double and won't be able to join you.

message 1830: by Cynda (last edited Jan 10, 2021 05:46PM) (new)

Cynda | 5197 comments Lilly, come join in of you can. If not, we may yet be reading other Woolf works later. We have been reading at the rate of a new selection every 6 weeks or so. So look out for upcoming selections. So check in about the end of February to see what we will be reading mid-March.

message 1831: by Lilly (last edited Jan 10, 2021 05:54PM) (new)

Lilly | 447 comments Sounds great, Cynda :)
If I'm swarmed in february, march will likely be off as well. But I'll just keep an eye open for the future and hope that I can squeeze in Waves ...

message 1837: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 386 comments There were 51 votes for American Indian Stories, and 31 for Love Medicine in the February New School poll, so anyone up for one of those for a buddy read?

message 1838: by Annette (new)

Annette | 618 comments I just read (and nominated) American Indian Stories so I'll be able join in that discussion. And depending on when the buddy read for Love Medicine occurs, I might be able to join in. I tend to have multiple books going simultaneously so I move slower through each.

Philina | 1085 comments Michaela wrote: "There were 51 votes for American Indian Stories, and 31 for Love Medicine in the February New School poll, so anyone up for one of those for a buddy read?"

I'd be up for American Indian Stories. Just not in February, because I'm totally swamped with group reads. I could squash it in right now or in March.

message 1840: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 386 comments I´d be okay for March, as I´m rather busy with group reads atm too, and March is a longer month. ;)

message 1841: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 386 comments I think Love Medicine can be read in the Tracks buddy read thread, but could please some mod set up a buddy read for March of American Indian Stories? Everyone who´s further interested, please join then! :)

message 1842: by Levi (new)

Levi Hobbs | 64 comments I'm about to start reading through several works of Plato, starting with Apology. If anyone's interested, let me know a date that works for you to start. I'd prefer sometime between 2/1 and 2/15.

Also, if anyone's interested in just reading through a whole collection of Plato instead of doing one-offs, let me know.

message 1843: by Brina (new)

Brina For those reading The Street, I did not bring with me out of time. I am aiming for after the Súper bowl, the weekend of the 14-15. Feel free to start ahead of me.

message 1844: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 1285 comments Levi wrote: "Also, if anyone's interested in just reading through a whole collection of Plato instead of doing one-offs, let me know."

You tempt me. I read a fair bit of Plato in university, but I have plenty to go. Some years back I got the complete works (the Cooper edition, if that means anything to you), but I haven't gotten around to reading it. Do you seek to read everything, or just his main dialogues? I'm game if you don't set to high a pace. Plato should be savoured, contemplated, and discussed. (Also, I have a lot of other books on my plate.)

message 1845: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5197 comments Levi, I sent you an private message which I hope made it to your inbox. If Leni is interested, I can delete a personal challenge and join in on a slow read too as more the merrier. I would be interested in reading Apology, but also the whole work of The Trial and Death of Socrates too, each part read individually and thoughtfully.

message 1848: by Levi (new)

Levi Hobbs | 64 comments Cynda and Leni, a slow pace is fine with me. How slow?

Looking at the lengths of various dialogues, chunks of 20-30 pages seems a good way to measure. Some can be read in one sitting, others in two, or in the case of the Republic, each "book" in the Republic is 20-30 pages long.

How would you feel about...20-30 pages per week? per two weeks? per month?

As far as which ones to read, the Complete Works is just too long for me to commit to. Perhaps the three of us could establish a list of dialogues we each want to read. If 2 or 3 people want to read it, it goes on the list. Does that sound like a good plan?

If it does, reply back with your list. Here's mine:
- Trial and Death I: Euthyphro
- Trial and Death II: Apology
- Trial and Death III: Crito
- Trial and Death IV: Phaedo
- Meno
- Symposium
- The Republic

Depending on what it is, I may jump in on a few of yours as well.

message 1849: by Cynda (last edited Feb 02, 2021 01:53AM) (new)

Cynda | 5197 comments I am interested in

Trial and Death I: Euthyphro
Trial and Death II: Apology
Trail and Death III: Crito
Trail and Death IV: Phaedro
-Meno
-Symposium

I am good with reading one selection every two weeks, so two selections a month. That is my vote.

Maybe another year I will read The Republic. I read selections at uni. I might have to leave it at that, at least for this year.
