Hailee | 277 comments Great! Pink could you add Don Quixote to the schedule for the start of April? Thanks

message 752: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments I've got Darconville’s Cat in April too, but I can do both - just need to slim down a few of my other planned April reads... (goes off to play with spreadsheet...)

message 753: by Pink (last edited Feb 14, 2017 02:43AM) (new)

Pink | 5491 comments I'll add Don Quixote to April, with links to existing threads :)

Paula and Laurie, let me know if you'd like Little Women added to the list for March or April? :)

Is anyone still planning on reading A tree grows in Brooklyn this month? It's still on our schedule for Feb, but I'm yet to pick up my copy from the library and don't think anyone else has started reading or discussing it yet?!

If I've missed anything else just let me know!

message 754: by Holly (new)

Holly | 37 comments Paula, I'd like to read Little Women with you!

message 755: by Ellen (new)

Ellen B A number of us have discussed reading Kristin Lavransdatter, and since it's ineligible for a long read, could we buddy read it in April-june? I didn't want to forget about it.

message 756: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 1285 comments It doesn't look like Dune is likely to win the poll this time either, so would anyone care to buddy read it? In March or April? Or March and April, seeing as it is a bit of a brick.

Sarah | 468 comments Leni wrote: "It doesn't look like Dune is likely to win the poll this time either, so would anyone care to buddy read it? In March or April? Or March and April, seeing as it is a bit of a brick."

Dune is definitely a brick. I started reading it last month for another group. Feels like I've been reading it forever and I'm barely halfway through it.
I'd probably join in if there was enough interest, it would help motivate me to actually finish it.

Marilyn | 720 comments Ellen wrote: "A number of us have discussed reading Kristin Lavransdatter, and since it's ineligible for a long read, could we buddy read it in April-june? I didn't want to forget about it."

I would join in on Kristin Lavransdatter. Although I am very much about following the rules, I was disappointed when my nomination was thrown out on a technicality. April or May?

message 759: by Ellen (new)

Ellen B Hi Marilyn,

I'm fine with either. As I'm already planning to start a long read (Don Quixote) in April, how about May. :)

message 760: by Lesserknowngems (new)

Lesserknowngems | 81 comments I'm in with reading Kristin Lavransdatter as a buddy read in May, or is it an invite only thing?

message 761: by Paula W (new)

Paula W Holly, I am in for Little Women. Is early April good for you?

message 762: by Ellen (new)

Ellen B Lesserknowngems, you can certainly join us in reading Kristin. :)

Hailee | 277 comments Leni wrote: "It doesn't look like Dune is likely to win the poll this time either, so would anyone care to buddy read it? In March or April? Or March and April, seeing as it is a bit of a brick."

I'm definitely tempted even though I have so many others books I should be reading in those months. If a buddy read happens I'll most likely join in.

message 764: by Pink (last edited Feb 18, 2017 02:11PM) (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Quickly scanning through, it looks like we have -

Paula, Laurie and Holly - Little Women in April (Link to previous group read)

Ellen, Marilyn and Lesserknowngems - Kristin Lavransdatter in May (edit* Link to previous buddy read)

Leni, Sarah and Hailee- Dune. I can add this to the schedule for March or April, if you're all interested? (Link to our previous group read)

Brina - Love Medicine, or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. I don't think there's been any interest in these as yet.

Here's a reminder of what else we have on the schedule list for the next couple of months -

FEBRUARY
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Link to previous group discussion here
The Maltese Falcon Link to previous group discussion here
The Mill on the Floss Link to buddy read discussion here

FEBRUARY/ MARCH
War and Peace Link to previous group discussions here

MARCH
Doctor Zhivago Links to previous group discussion here
Le Morte d'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

APRIL
Darconville’s Cat
Don Quixote Link to previous group discussions here

As always, buddy reads are very informal and can change as and when required by those reading. The schedule is simply to keep everyone informed of what's going on and give more people the opportunity to join in!

If I've missed anything or there's any changes to make, just let me know!

I'm good with May. Looks like it is going on the schedule.

I would be up for the "East of Eden" buddy read.

We already have a Buddy Read Discussion thread for Kristin Lavransdatter.

Several of us did a buddy read last March - May, here is a link to the thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 768: by Ellen (new)

Ellen B Thanks, Kathy. I know I'd seen last year's buddy read of it.

message 769: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Thanks Kathy! I thought it had been read before, but couldn't see it on our bookshelf. I forgot to check the buddy read threads!

I'll update the schedule list with links to everything :)

Astrid and Holly, if you'd like to buddy read East of Eden together, we already have discussion threads for this too, as it's been a past group read. Once you decide which month works for you both, I can add it to the schedule list.

message 770: by Ellen (new)

Ellen B Pink,
Since Phantohm of the Opera is hovering around the middle of the polls for rereading in April, can you put it on the schedule for March, please?

Will do :)

Hailee | 277 comments Since it's looking less and less likely that The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle will win the April poll, does anyone have time to buddy read it in March?

Hailee wrote: "Since it's looking less and less likely that The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle will win the April poll, does anyone have time to buddy read it in March?"

Hi Hailee, I've been meaning to try some Haruki Murakami for awhile now, so I'm interested in reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle next month!

Astrid (Lillelara) wrote: "Holly wrote: "Anyone interested in reading Middlemarch, The Idiot, or East of Eden with me?"

I would also like to read East of Eden :) When would everyone like to start the book? March or April works for me.

message 775: by Bat-Cat (new)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Hailee, I very much want to read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles but am not certain yet if I can commit to March - April or May would most likely work better for me. I don't mean to delay you guys, I could just carry on the thread as I progress. I am very glad that there is interest in reading this book so now I won't have to nominate it again. ;-)

I would also like to read Don Quixote but I know that is out until later in the year - if at all. Too many books so little time. ;-)

I am really close to finally finishing Don Quixote. There are 168 installments using Serial Reader App & I've now got less than 20 left to read. So you can do it really slow if you need to.

message 777: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments I would like to buddy read WUBC but am choc-a in March & April, so May would be earliest for me, but if others want to go earlier I could just join the discussion later :o)

message 778: by Bat-Cat (new)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Thanks for the reminder Kathy, I may just to that. ;-)

Darren, I looks as though we may end up being the tail end of this WUBC train. ;-)

message 780: by Bat-Cat (new)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Okay Tara, I will shoot for May and will put it on my reading calendar NOW!!!! Thanks for being flexible. ;-)

message 781: by Hailee (last edited Feb 21, 2017 10:21AM) (new)

Hailee | 277 comments If May works better for other people then we can set that as the month for buddy reading WUBC?

Depending on how my reading goes I may still read it in March but I can still take part in the discussion anyway. Although knowing me I'll get distracted by other books in March anyway and so end up reading it in May ;-). (April will be dominated by Don Quixote for me. In fact I may start that a bit early as it's unlikely I'll be able to read it all in April anyway). We can maybe nominate WUBC for the New Classics poll in May but have the intention to read it in May whether it wins or not. Does that sound good to everyone?

message 783: by Brina (new)

Brina I may join you in May just to read something out of my comfort zone. I have D Quixote at home and could join that too. I'd like to read it serially but how would I do that with the hard copy of the book? Any ideas.

It's pretty episodic,
There's 74 chapters, so you could do one chapter a day, or one every two days, or three per week, etc.

Three per week equals 172 days worth, which is more or less the length of time Serial reader app takes.

You could also just divide the number of pages by the length of time you'd like to take ad read that many pages per day - but that's going to leave you in the middle of the action quite often

Depending on how many segments you wanted to divide it into you could split it by page numbers? For example my copy has 961 pages if you wanted to read it over one month that would be about 30 'serials' which is about 32 pages. You could go though the book beforehand and put an index sticky note every 32-ish pages (wherever might be a good place to stop for the day) that way you can easily identify where you need to stop without having to think about it. I think the serial app comes at a certain time each day (one that you have picked) so you could set an alarm on your phone as a reminder to go off at the same time each day to mimic this... just an idea :-)

You could extend the time frame to read it over to suit you.

message 787: by Brina (new)

Brina Sounds good to me. I will tentatively plan on both as long as D Quixote has a reading schedule. I read a modern, abridged version when I was in school but not since.

Hi Tara. I would love to do the buddy read and both months would be fine by me :).

message 790: by Brina (new)

Brina Adrian that was me. I'm trying to read it but in a rut now. If you could start next week that would be great.

message 791: by Brina (new)

Brina Hailee-- I think mine is 1000 or so pages so I'm going to do that with sticky notes every 33 pages. What a great idea. So yes I will join in April even though it's my busy holiday month. Reading 30 or so pages a day I should be able to keep up.

Brina lol I almost forgot. You see I'm in a total reading read rut and can't completely remember what books go where. Yes, my mother recommended East of Eden to me and I would love to read it in May. So no go for the WUBC because I committed to EofE first.

Yay! Glad you like the idea and that you're going to join the buddy read.

I think that's roughly the schedule we'll keep to in order to have a chance to complete it in a month. But if people start to fall behind we can reassess the time scale and maybe extend it into May if needed.

I may cheat and read a bit in March to give myself a chance to keep up though since I can be quite a slow reader ;-)

Hi Holly and Brina. Tara and I would like to join the East of Eden Buddy Read as well. Tara asked if March or April would be okay, but May would also be fine, at least for me (I don´t care which month I will be reading it). I don´t know about Tara, though.

message 798: by Brina (new)

Brina Astrid, I can not do before May. March and April are my busy months in real life. I hope May can work for the two of you as well.

message 799: by Holly (new)

Holly | 37 comments Glad to have you both along with us. I hope May works for you both as well.

Perhaps you, Tara and I could do a separate buddy read for something next month if you both are up for it?

message 800: by Ellen (new)

Ellen B I might join the East of Eden buddy read as well; I should give Steinbeck another chance.
