Catching up on Classics (and lots more!) discussion

I'd like to join in for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn; I've been meaning to read it for awhile! And next week is great since that's when I get back from vacation (and the pile of books in my room) :)

I would also be interested in the buddy read for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I actually just bought it, so next week is perfect!

I will be starting One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in about a week. If someone want to join reading that would be great. I will be reading it now in any case, as I just got the Danish translation from an interlibrary loan.

That's probably a bit too soon for me, I have voted for it in the August polls, but I don't think it will win.

Maybe, I do want to read them, but there are an awful lot and I'm bad at buddy reading at the moment. What timescale are you thinking of reading them?

I'll be reading it over a period of a couple months. I want to be able to savor each one.

I'll take a look for a second hand copy of his short stories, but I'd probably only dip in and out of them. If you go ahead with a buddy read, I might join when I can.

I wish I could lend my physical copies of books to ppl- As an English teacher, and holder of an English degree, AND having worked at a bookstore with a huge discount, I have an INSANE book collection! (REAL books, though. Heavy hardcovers and such.) --Jen from Quebec :0)

I wish I could borrow them too! Luckily my library provides for most of my wants, though sometimes I prefer to have my own copies of favourite authors.

Nicole and I will be starting Midnight's Children on the 20th. Anyone is welcome to join in.

I read it ages ago, back in school. And it has been ever since one of the most powerful things I ever read. It is beautifully written.

I would also recommend Cancer Ward, which is my absolute favourite.

Question Pink: Is it okay with the group rulesm ways of doing things, that we have 2 buddy reads in the same month. We are thinking of reading NicholasN first before DonQ. This okay?

I didn't know Don Quixote had more than two books either?!

Nicholas Nickleby hasn't been a group read before, so will need a discussion thread created when you're ready. You can do this yourself, or I can do it for you.

If you let me know what month you're planning on reading these two books I'll add them to the buddy read schedule. I'll wait and see if you have any other takers for War and Peace in October, but there's plenty of time yet :)

I'm having a great time over here imagining what a third book might include. A time travel adventure with Ignatius Jacques Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces? A gonzo journalism take on the Spanish prison system titled "Fear and Loathing in Debtor's Prison?" A Fahrenheit 451 dystopia where he has to battle the Firemen who want to burn his books? The possibilities are endless, and I haven't even got to my TNG holodeck ideas.

Actually, I remember someone nominating The Female Quixote, so perhaps that's what Cynda's referring to. If so, that sounds like a fun one to read.

Thanks Pink. The old thread is good for Don Quixote. And yes, we will need a discussiion thread for Nicholas Nickleby Would you set that thread up for August? I am still learning basics.

I will look into how many books Don Q has. I always thought 2. I have read 2 long ago. But I came across something recently that said 5 books. My new-to-me copy has 5 sections.
Who knows? More will be revealed 👀

Oh! Book 1 has 4 parts and book 2 has 1 part, so all together, that's 5 parts. I remember that causing some confusion in the group read!

Perhaps your edition/translation just names them parts 1-5?

I just douuunt know. I am confused. Somewhere I was reading that it has 5 parts total, that most people just read 2parts, the hest parts. The other parts are not as good. My new-to-me cooy is part of a Harvard Series, I believe, and has have section of chapters. I am not at my apartment right now or I would check. I am housesitting until Tuesday afternoon.
