Those are great! I like them all but Lava Ladies gets my top vote. :)

The mods give it actually. If you send a PM they can grant you access. I was able to see the spreadsheet for all the other teams but not ours. LOL

message 10: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments I clicked the button asking for access, so I guess I just wait. I want to look at our 10 tasks so I can find 2-3 that are on my kindle. But I have plenty of time.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I've found books on my TBR that fit all 10 categories, so if you all want to choose first, I'll fit one in. If it helps, I can edit my list above as we go along to indicate who is reading for each task as it is decided.

message 16: by Paula (last edited Jul 23, 2019 06:58AM) (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 1073 comments When do we start to read?
I'll check my books for the categories.

Also, I can see the SS, but I don't know if I should ask for permission to edit

The challenge runs August 12 - October 7. We'll have 2 weeks to complete the 10 tasks above and then the "safe zone" tasks. After those 2 weeks, the mods will announce the next 10-task countdown and safe zones.

message 18: by Paula (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 1073 comments good, then I have books for:

9. With at least nine characters (need to have a speaking part, do not need to be main characters)
8. That has a carnivorous animal on the cover
7. Written by an author who has published at least seven books (as listed on Goodreads)
1. Which is the author's debut novel

I prefer reading for tasks 7 and 1, but any of those I could read.

message 19: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments Cyndee wrote: " If it helps, I can edit my list above as we go along to indicate who is reading for each ..."

I think this would be great, then we are not looking for books for tasks that are already covered. thanks

message 20: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments I can do
#10 first published on the 10th of a month
#6 that is number six in the series

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll start with number 9 (nine characters with speaking parts) and then see what is left to do when I've finished that one.

message 22: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments It's nice to have a little reading decided ahead. Maybe I can find uses for these in other August challenges.

I'm planning on that as well. Fingers crossed. :)

message 24: by Paula (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 1073 comments I'll start with N°1 if everyone's ok with that

message 25: by JenniferJ (last edited Jul 23, 2019 04:16PM) (new)

JenniferJ | 202 comments May I go with

That has a carnivorous animal on the cover
That has two authors (as credited on Goodreads)

I don't do audio books so sadly I be no help at all there. :(

Do we all have to edit the spreadsheets or just one of us? I'd rather not if I don't have to but if I have to I will figure out how. LOL

I've updated the list in message 11 with everyone's preferences for the start. :) We've planned so well now that this 3 week wait to start on the 12th is going to drag. ha!

Luckily for the audio one, we don't have to actually listen to the audio edition, it just has to have one. When I was trying to see what I had that fit, I put one on my list (Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid) that has 4 narrators on the audio edition but I just planned on reading the book.

I don't think it really makes a difference on the SS whether it's all one person, everyone doing their own, or something in between. Linda mentioned being able/willing to take on captain-ish duties after the 17th, and I don't mind updating it either.

I was looking at the team tracking spreadsheet and there are quite a few teams using some variation of Lava .... to the point that it could get confusing. Should we change our team name?

message 28: by Paula (last edited Jul 24, 2019 06:55AM) (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 1073 comments I don't mind about the name, I like Lava Ladies hahaha. But I liked these too:
Magma Maidens
Go With The Flow

I noticed that too. LOL I'm up with whatever is best for everybody. I ain't hard to work with at all.

message 30: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments I think if we want to change then I'll vote for Go With the Flow - different from everything else.

message 31: by JenniferJ (new)

JenniferJ | 202 comments OK so I know we have to read the first 10 books but after that when we move onto the Safe Zone areas......

Like for Part 1 in the Safe Zone do we all have to do a letter to complete this task or just 2 of us read a letter to complete it before moving onto Part 2? Same for part 2 do we all take a task or just 2 of us? Wanting to try to plan some books ahead if I can.

My understanding is that we can/should all work on the Safe Zone tasks but each one has different rules we have to follow based on our classification.

For Safe Zone 1, we have to make sure that at least 2 of the books used to spell out LAVA have been either read by someone on another team since the start of the challenge (so basically one they used for their 10-1 countdown) OR is a previous book-of-the-month for the NBRC group but it doesn't seem to matter how many of us work on this, so if someone is a fast reader and takes the bulk of the reading for this one I don't believe it matters.

For Safe Zone 2, we could all read and take a task each, or any combination that makes sure at least 2 of us are participating, so even if there is one team member who reads a lot more than the rest, there isn't one person doing the entirety of the tasks for this Zone.

For Safe Zone 3, where we spell out any word used in any of the tasks, there seems to be a couple of ways to approach it. We could agree on a single word and then each take a letter or letters to work together to complete that word, OR we could each choose a word and work to complete it independently, but the entire word has to be complete before the deadline in order to get any credit for it. Another choice would be a situation such as: I knew I could read 4 books before the end of the deadline, I could take on a 4 letter word while the rest of the team works together to complete another 5 letter word, or any combination thereof.

We do not have to do all of the Safe Zones but if we start one, we have to finish it before we can move on a different one. If I'm reading them correctly, those Safe Zone 2 tasks seem brutal! I have 2 of the 4 tasks that I can't even find books to fit. So if the rest of the team is having similar issues, we can choose to just do Safe Zones 1 and 3, or just one, really, if that's what we can accomplish.

Is this how you all are interpreting how this works?? I feel like I need a flow chart sometimes with these challenges :)

Whatever we decide, and for the entirety of the challenge, I'll just keep making changes to the info in Message 11 so we can keep track of who has claimed what and we know what holes need to be filled.

message 34: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 26, 2019 05:52PM) (new)

Also, I believe, say we decided to do Safe Zone 1 and Safe Zone 3, we don't have to wait around for SZ1 to be 100% complete before starting books for SZ3, we just can't post completions for the SZ3 before we've completed SZ1. That way we aren't sitting around all waiting for 1 person to finish up the last book before we can move on. Same for moving on from the original countdown. Say we have 9 of the 10 tasks complete, the remaining 3 team members can start working on the Safe Zone task. Does that make sense?? It's a little confusing because it says that we "can't complete them concurrently" but that "you can start books for the safe zone groups at the same time, but you have to finish a group at a time."

I REALLY hope I'm understanding all of this correctly. LOL

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

BTW, I'm not advocating skipping Safe Zone 2, just using that as an example and venting my frustration over finding books to fit. LOL :)

message 36: by JenniferJ (new)

JenniferJ | 202 comments I agree with you that is how I am reading and understanding it but ok like say the first safe zone we have to spell out LAVA and in the group we in I think 2 folks would need to read a BOM or a book read by another member but would those 2 letters completed mean we are done or would we still have to spell out the whole word before moving on?

message 37: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments JenniferJ wrote: "I agree with you that is how I am reading and understanding it but ok like say the first safe zone we have to spell out LAVA and in the group we in I think 2 folks would need to read a BOM or a boo..."

It says the word has to be all filled out and for Crater teams 2 of the letters are for other team reads and BOM

message 38: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments Cyndee, which of SZ2 did you find?
I have 2 I can do - how do we match up?

#2 Gone With the Nerd (Nerds, #4) by Vicki Lewis Thompson - Vicki Lewis Thompson - red cover - THO (HOT) in Thompson

#4 The Pumpkin Muffin Murder (A Fresh-Baked Mystery, #5) by Livia J. Washburn - Livia J. Washburn - hot item on cover (oven) - LAVA in author name

The same 2, of course. I'm going to spend a little time this morning seeing what else I can hunt down for the other 2. I had only gone through my TBR shelves and works by my favorite authors. I'll let you know what I find!

message 40: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments I'll continue looking also and post what I find

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I've found books for the other 2. Task 1 was much easier to find than I originally expected once I thought about combinations of words that would give the letters needed (i.e. have always) so I bet we could all find one for that task that fits the genres we prefer to read.

The 3rd one was much tougher but I just happened to have a book on my kindle that has lightening/electricity on the cover and has "lava" in the text.

message 42: by Linda C (last edited Jul 27, 2019 12:30PM) (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments I have a copy of J. D. Salinger's Nine Stories on my shelf that was published in 1953. So put me down for #5 in the countdown.

I also found Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton on my kindle that will work for one of the As in SZ1, if we do that after the countdown. It also was a BOM, so that satisfies one of the Crater requirements for that task.

I also have Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas on my kindle for #1 in the SZ2 group, if we go for that. It has red writing and LAVA in the title

We may not do or get to these before I am back from my vacation, but I wanted to verify that I had kindle choices if I needed them while I was away from my print books. I am not worried about SZ3 group tasks. That one is broad.

I'll have my laptop, so I will be available and in contact throughout.

This is great Linda!! I'll go ahead an add all 3 of the Safe Zones to that tracker just in case. Make planning ahead easier. I found the list of the previous BOTM so I'll go through that now and see what I've got as well.

Of the 3 you have for SZ2, do you have a preference on which you'd like to start with? I'll go ahead and put myself in for #3 (hot item with lava in the text), unless Paula or Jennifer have one that they want to read for it...then I'll happily switch tasks. :)
