Jenn | 10 comments 2015 Read Harder Challenge
1/24 tasks completed

1. A book written by someone when they were under the age of 25

Planned: I'm going to start with I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, White Teeth, The Icarus Girl, Purple Hibiscus, and maybe Falling into Place

2. A book written by someone when they were over the age of 65

Planned: Stone Mattress: Nine Tales by Margaret Atwood (she's currently 75). If I get ambitious I will also read her Maddaddam Trilogy. it wasn't started after she turned 65, but it did end after she was past 65.

3. A collection of short stories

Planned - One or more of the following: Tenth of December by George Saunders, Fantasy For Good: A Charitable Anthology by authors including GRRM and Neil Gaiman, Almost Famous Women: Stories by Megan Mayhew Bergman, or Get in Trouble by Kelly Link, The Most Beautiful Book in the World: Eight Novellas and The Woman with the Bouquet by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt

4. A book published by an indie press

Planned - One or more of the following: The End of the Sentence, Loitering: New and Collected Essays, Rainey Royal, Prophecies, Libels & Dreams: Stories, The Goddess of Small Victories, On Immunity: An Inoculation

5. A book by or about someone that identifies as LGBTQ

Planned: Huntress and Ash by Malinda Lo or maybe something by Sarah Waters like The Paying Guests. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is also possible and something I already own but never read.

6. A book by a person whose gender is different from your own

7. A book that takes place in Asia

Planned - A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini since I loved Kite Runner and The Mountains Echoed. I also want to read some Haruki Murakami set in Asia, particularly After Dark and Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. I've also had A Fine Balance for years and haven't ever manage to get past the first couple of pages, so maybe this reading challenge will give me the fortitude. The Reluctant Fundamentalist

8. A book by an author from Africa

Planned - One or more of the following: something by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie like Purple Hibiscus, something by Nnedi Okorafor, or something by Naguib Mahfouz

9. A book that is by or about someone from an indigenous culture (Native Americans, Aboriginals, etc.)

10. A microhistory

Planned: Something French or Parisian (just recommended to me by another group member is The Essence of Style: How the French Invented High Fashion, Fine Food, Chic Cafes, Style, Sophistication, and Glamour), if not... then Empire of Cotton: A Global History by Sven Beckert.

Other Options: The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester, Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson, Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond, Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky, The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elementsby Sam Kean, The Coffee House: A Cultural History, Maphead: Charting the Wide, Weird World of Geography Wonks by Ken Jennings; The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge Paperback , The Billionaire's Vinegar: The Mystery of the World's Most Expensive Bottle of Wine, The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It, The Secret of Chanel No. 5: The Intimate History of the World's Most Famous Perfume

11. A YA novel
We Were Liars by e. lockhart Finished Jan 3, 2015.
More books will come in this category, as I read a lot of YA.

12. A sci-fi novel
There are so many in my TBR list that I don't need to plan this one.

13. A romance novel
Planned: possibly something by Sarah MacLean like Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover or Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. This is a tough one because there are a lot of things that Amazon places in the romance category that I wouldn't classify a romance.

14. A National Book Award, Man Booker Prize or Pulitzer Prize winner from the last decade

Planned: The Goldfinch, Gilead, and The Road

15. A book that is a retelling of a classic story

Planned - One or more of the following: Cinder and the other books in this series, How a Mother Weaned Her Girl from Fairy Tales: and Other Stories, The Grimm Diaries by Cameron Jace or Laura Briggs & Sarah Steinbrenner Dark Woods Series

16. An audiobook

Planned: Empire of Cotton: A Global History or As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride, Neverwhere, The Hundred-Foot Journey. I have a lot of options in this category.

17. A collection of poetry
Planned Poisoned Apples: Poems for You, My Pretty by Christine Heppermann

18. A book that someone else has recommended to you
Planned: Nora Roberts The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy

19. A book that was originally published in another language

Planned: Marina, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Gourmet Rhapsody. I own a lot of Naguib Mahfouz that I haven't read. I also want to try something by Haruki Murakami (After Dark, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, and/or The Strange Library). I own a couple of books by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, short story collections translated from French, The Most Beautiful Book in the World: Eight Novellas and The woman with the Bouquet.

20. A graphic novel, a graphic memoir or a collection of comics of any kind

Planned: Shoplifter, The Sculptor, and some Neil Gaiman

21. A book that you would consider a guilty pleasure

22. A book published before 1850
Planned: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

23. A book published this year

Planned: This list will be extensive, but I'm definitely going to read The Buried Giant and The Darkest Part of the Forest for starters.

24. A self-improvement book
