message 171: by Lenore (last edited Nov 18, 2015 09:47AM) (new)

Lenore | 2 comments Plans:A book written by someone when they were under the age of 25 - Karen Russell — St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves - changed to White Teeth - Zadie Smith. started White Teeth by Zadie Smith July 7, 2015. Fin White Teeth by Zadie Smith July 11. I really liked the meandering, stream-of-consciousness tone of this book. I thought the characterization was really great - I was really annoyed by some of them. I mean that in a good way, that they were written true to life and their space in my head was like a real person I could be annoyed with, rather than being annoyed at bad writing. Still plan to read St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised By Wolves, just was having trouble getting my hands on a copy.
A book written by someone when they were over the age of 65 - Raylan - Elmore Leonard. update: since Elmore Leonard was 68 when Pronto (the first in the series) was published, I'm going to read that for the challenge and then read the rest of the series. Started July 20, 2015. I have watched Justified, so I'm encountering familiar names and wondering how close things are. Obviously, this is pre-series for Justified, but I'm seeing them as 2 works that have characters with similar names and some similar characteristics, but fundamentally they are 2 different stories. I don't see the 2 Raylans, for instance, as the same person at all. Just 2 guys with similar backgrounds, jobs and talents. Obviously this might be a case of POV - the show doesn't give the window into his head that the book does - but they are different to me. I like them both, though. fin July 21.
A collection of short stories (either by one person or an anthology by many people) - Esther Friesner - Witch Way To The Mall? - started march 12, got an ILL book and Any Known Blood, with more holds coming soon (probably) very soon after I started, so it'll be awhile before I'm back to this. finished March 19.
A book published by an indie press - A John Joseph Adams anthology, maybe Other Worlds Than These (Night Shade Books). Started Other Worlds Than These Oct. 10, 2015. finished Oct 12, 2015.
A book by or about someone that identifies as LGBTQ - Emma Donoghue - Frog Music - started April 20, 2015. Finished April 23, 2015. I really like how the time shifts helped me empathize with Blanche's confusion and paranoia about the people around her.
A book by a person whose gender is different from your own - Michael Crichton - The Lost World - started March 11, 2015. finished march 12, 2015.

A book that takes place in Asia - The Calligrapher's Daughter - Eugenia Kim. Started August 24, 2015. fin Sept. 13, 2015.
A book by an author from Africa - Mother To Mother - Sindiwe Magona - ordered by ILL. This just came in (Feb 4) & I'm about 50 pages in. I had forgotten what the blurb said because it was awhile ago that I planned to read it. I definitely have to read for context and look some phrases up, or just read a little more and figure out what something means (like getting a stomach = get pregnant). This is also very interesting because it's very sympathetic. This woman is trying to understand what's happened and who her son is, and feeling for the girl's family, all while she deals with the rest of her family and public opinion. Finished Feb 5. I definitely recommend this. I said before that it was sympathetic, and what I mean is that you feel what the author has her character feel - I was pissed at the people who were unfair or took advantage of the protagonist, and I found her very reasonable and true to life. Also, it's sympathetic because there is a tendency to blame parents, especially mothers, in publicized cases like this. I think this book destroys that idea (at least the idea that it's always that way) more completely than anything I've ever read. The protagonist is witheringly sarcastic when it comes to people assuming she somehow caused or influenced the tragedy.
A book that is by or about someone from an indigenous culture (Native Americans, Aboriginals, etc.) - Thomas King -The Inconvenient Indian/The Grass Dancer - Susan Power. I do want to read The Grass Dancer sometime, but I came across a copy of Inconvenient Indian easily, so I'm reading that. Started Sept. 13, 2015. finished Sept. 15, 2015.
A microhistory - Coal: A Human History by Barbara Freese - start Jan 10, 2015 - finished Jan 12
A YA novel - Patricia C. Wrede - Dealing With Dragons & Christopher Pike - Remember Me. Both started and finished March 19.
A sci-fi novel - Stephen Baxter - Stone Spring (have finished this as of Jan. 8, 2015. At first, I didn't even realize it was an alternate history, I saw that it was about prehistoric humans and tried it out, and figured I would find out in the book why it was in the SF/F section at the library. I plan to read the rest of the trilogy.)
A romance novel - Georgette Heyer - Lady of Quality. I also finished this as of Jan. 8, 2015. I was reading them together because the copy of Stone Spring I had was kind of awkward to hold and I would take breaks. I was very much in sympathy with the main characters Annis & Oliver, who often found themselves exasperated with certain personality types.
A National Book Award, Man Booker Prize or Pulitzer Prize winner from the last decade - Eleanor Catton - The Luminaries. finished march 28, 2015.
A book that is a retelling of a classic story (fairytale, Shakespearian play, classic novel, etc.) - Longbourn - Jo Baker. Reading Longbourn as of Jan 14, 2015. finished Jan 29. While I was reading this, I found it went very fast, apart from the lull when I was reading some library books that had come in.
An audiobook - The Ocean at the End of the Lane - Neil Gaiman - in progress. I'm not an auditory learner, so this is going slow. I have to listen a bit, maybe go back, then listen more. finished march 16, 2015. I knew this was probably going to be the hardest one for me, which is why I chose something by Neil Gaiman (1 of my favourite writers). I still expect to rate this as the worst challenge in the Read Harder challenge when I'm finished.
A collection of poetry - Pablo Neruda - Twenty Love Poems & a Song of Despair - Finished Jan 10, 2015.
A book that someone else has recommended to you - Any Known Blood - Lawrence Hill - started March 15, 2015. finished March 17.
A book that was originally published in another language - Gabriel Garcia Marquez - The General in his Labyrinth. started June 2, 2015.
A graphic novel, a graphic memoir or a collection of comics of any kind (Hi, have you met Panels?) Attack on Titan: No Regrets volume 1 & 2 - by Gun Snark (Author), Hajime Isayama (Creator), Hikaru Suruga (Illustrator) - Ordered by ILL. I was able to find them in another library before the ILLs came, but I'll enjoy reading them again. Both started and finished May 2, 2015. I like the prequels (I got Before the Fall at the same time) because I like getting some backstory, whether of familiar characters or of the history and context of the Attack on Titan world.

A book that you would consider a guilty pleasure (Read, and then realize that good entertainment is nothing to feel guilty over) - Something I spend a lot of time on, and then feel guilty for neglecting other things – maybe something by Lois McMaster Bujold, Diana Wynne Jones, Stephen King, Georgette Heyer, Naomi Novik, Michael Crichton, Patricia C. Wrede, maybe an anthology edited by John Joseph Adams... Yeah, I've decided to read Young Miles by Lois McMaster Bujold. Young Miles is a collection of short stories (maybe novellas?) in the Vorkosgian Saga series. Started Nov. 5. Fin. Nov. 6
A book published before 1850 - William Shakespeare - Troilus & Cressida. started June 6, 2015. finished June 9, 2015. Footnotes are a pain, but I do like it whenever I read them and find that I've gotten the double meaning from context. It's also frustrating with the sexism of the times, both of the source material and Elizabethan period. Of course this is expected, but a woman being considered immoral because she's been abducted or betrayed is really something that provokes a visceral reaction even with foreknowledge. Obviously, these attitudes are not unique to history, but a work of art in which these themes are so important to the story is somewhat tiring.
A book published this year - The Fifth Heart - Dan Simmons/Trigger Warning - Neil Gaiman (I pre-ordered them) - update june 9: so these arrived awhile ago, and I'm just trying to sort through when I'm going to fit them in. update # 2: The Fifth Heart started June 17. update: fin The Fifth Heart June 22, 2015.
A self-improvement book (can be traditionally or non-traditionally considered “self-improvement”) - try to learn something crafty? started Complete Guide to Needlework Aug. 29. fin. Nov. 18, 2015.
