I haven't finished the book yet. I am just about half trough but I would still like to say what I am thinking right know. I pretty much like both of them. Cal is the typical more badass guy and Maven is the softer one. For me it seems very obvious that mare is going to end up with Cal. It's simply so typical but I am feeling very very sorry for Maven. Especially after he said that he has always been in cals shadow and that's why I would really like him to get the girl instead of the typical bad boy hot guy. I always tend to like the cute and nice guys more than the bad boy. So my fingers are crossed for Maven.

Cal, all the way. I was on Cal's team the first moment he entered the story. What really sold me though, was the dance lessons.

I'm the only one who really loves Maven. Even if he doesn't end up with Mare I want him to have a great ending in the trilogy.

You're not the only one. Maven is great and that is, what frustrates me so much about this book right know. Mare is all the time like cal here and cal there and I hate that. That's why I hate love triangles, the one I love does usually not get the girl :(

After you finish the book, the question pretty much answers itself. I think only one brother may be a possible contender in the sequel.

ok so this might sound weird but def maven the kid has great potential to become so much more as a character and i think he'll surprise us all in the next book (call me crazy but i actually think maven's chances of ending up with mare are higher than cal's)

Definitely Team Maven. For the first half of the book I wanted her to end up with Cal but, while I still like Cal, I don't find him "attractive" anymore; I like the snarky, sarcastic guys, the ones with good come backs who can handle their words and challenge the heroine with discussions and talk and that's definitely not Cal's style.

Still, (spoiler) when someone revels in a gleeful method to kill me in gruesome manner (with a gleam in his eye, and a cruel twisted smile), it is sort of a turnoff. I think Maven is more likely to end in a relationship with his mother.

Oh, yeah that might be possible :D but even after finishing the book I can't stop but liking him. I believe that it is all his mothers fault and I still think that he is the most interesting character in the entire book.

I liked both maven and cal, but I liked cal from the beginning. I may be the only one lol

Maven. No doubt about it.

I def liked Cal in the beginning. He caught my attention right away. But as the book went on, I found him to be slightly annoying (which was still ok) and found Maven to be more sweet. Now that the book has ended, I really only see one way of this ending... I mean... (view spoiler)[Maven was acting the whole time, so it made me feel like he really isn't capable of emotion or feeling or love at all. If this is true, then he wont be getting any relationships. (Maven is an intelligent character, so I don't think he would be stupid enough to just follow along with what his mother wished without having his own reasons. This is why I don't think he is in any way innocent) But there still is the chance that he will melt and and be the boy we saw in the middle of the book, and if this does happen, I'll be more than happy to have him with Mare. However. (hide spoiler)] Currently, Cal is just so much better for Mare. He has strong enough opinions to have some great fights with her. Where as I didn't get this vibe from Maven. He seems to much like a quiet follower to have his own backbone.

I seriously love Maven. It's weird because I usually fall for the manly more bad boy type, and Cal fits that description much more than Maven, but something about Maven really intrigues me, and (spoiler alert!) even though he betrays her in the end I'm seriously hoping there was some hidden reason behind that or he'll regret what he did, because I seriously need Mare and Maven to be together!!

Its super hard to come up with a ship name for Maven and Mare! I mean its... Marven? Mavare? there's not many options haha

I am team Maven. Gah! Even if the book have a twist but there is something about maven that caught my attention I saw him having faults but still he loved mare.

I'm with Team Maven, even through what happened at the end of the book. I think his mother is controlling him with her mind. Can't wait for the second book. Can it come now?

I'm team Cal to the end. I see Maven being compared to the Darkling and Warner, and I am just... nO.

The Darkling is a villain who believes with all his heart that he is saving the Grisha and freeing the population from a tyrant (sadly he doesn't see that he's become a tyrant himself in the process). While Maven is none of that. He has no charismatic appeal, is weak physically and mentally, and he cowardly hides behind his mother's skirts. Maven does the despicable things he does, knowing full well of their destruction, and he revels in it.

Warner might have killed, fully conscious of the immorality of the act, however, he takes no pleasure in killing. He does what has to be done, as he operates by his own code of justice, and [spoiler] to protect his mother. On the other hand, becoming a villain was Maven's grotesque version of being a petulant child: when he doesn't get what he wants, he lashes out at everyone. There is no noble goal, no disillusions about his actions. In fact, Cal, with his bloody acts and a stubborn mind on the righteousness of his philosophy, are much more Darkling-esque. So no, I wouldn't put Maven in the same category as those like Warner, the Darkling, Julian the Shadowman, or Death from the Arcana Chronicles.

ok lets see ... first of all this is only the first book did you as a reader know that warner took no pleasure in killing from the first book only ? i'm sure you know that in ya novels specifically everything turns out to be different than what they seemed to be in the first book so yeah when i look at maven and i see potentials i see what he could be as a character okay lets start with some of the things i found completely wrong :
'He has no charismatic appeal, is weak physically and mentally' in more than one occasion throughout the book mare said that maven is more charismatic than cal that cal's more of a soldier and maven is more of a people person the one that charms you into believing whatever he says and i think it worked even on mare considering he lied to her and us and we totally fell for it and i think that mare hinted that maven would be a better leader than cal once (if i remember correctly) so yeah maven is extremely smart and charismatic now lets get to the physically weak part personally i think maven was faking it maven's not the underdog maven pretended to be the underdog in order to not look suspicious (don't get me wrong he'd been the underdog for most of his life but as the guy said everyone around maven could sense he'd had a 'change of heart''
now the 'he cowardly hides behind his mother's skirts' and the intentions part : i believe we'll figure that out in the next 2 books (like we did with aaron) and actually we saw maven stand up to his mother for mare and i'm sure we'll see more in the next book , i'm telling you if maven turns out to be a momma's boy and all that i myself will unstan him i won't ask you to like him bc i fully understand where you're coming from it just takes little faith to like an unlikable character with potentials normally i ignore opposing comments but i only commented on this bc you were kinda judging people who like maven and compare him to warner the thing is we see what he could be you see what he seems to be which is totally cool just wanted to clear thing up (a summery lol : it took warner 2 books and a novella for us to understand his actions and we only got like 2 chapters of evil maven give him time or don't totally your choice just like its ours to compare him to whatever character we like)

I am still firm on my stance with Maven, however. He's just not my kind of villain lmao. But I see where you are coming from as well. YA characters have evolved a lot and no one is quite how they seem at the beginning. It'd be interesting to see how his fate, and Cal's and Mare's, unravel.

yeah i feel you its impossible not to love warner he's like my ultimate book boyfriend only problem is he hates everyone thats not Juliette and i'm not lol but a girl can hope (ps i feel kinda embarrassed bc i don't know who darkling is and before y'all give me the eye i'm more of a na person bt if he's anything like warner i def should read the book he's in )

Cal and Maven are just great and I just fell in love with them but it is just too hard to choose!!!
hope both of the princes have a good ending at the end of the trilogy

Warner is in the Shatter Me trilogy (amazing books omg), and the Darkling is in the Grisha trilogy. Check them out!

I also rooted for Maven but now knowing that her goal at the end of the book is to kill him. I don't know how he's supposed to fix this in the next book...Although I really hope he finds a way.

While Maven has some potential for a redemption arc, him and Mare shouldn't be together before that. I mean, he manipulated her the entire book and then tried to murder her on national television mostly because she rejected him. If she decided to be with him after that, I would seriously doubt her judgement. But, after a lengthy redemption arc, maybe, I guess. I'm not enthusiastic about Cal and her either, though. I probably would have wanted her to be with false-Maven the most, but that feeling ended with the realization that there was something more sinister under that façade.

*Spoiler Alert* If you haven't finished the book, stop reading. Since the start of the royalty thing, I rooted for Maven. There's just a spark of something really... peculiar about him which makes me like him even more. BUT THEN, WHEN I REACHED THE FREAKING ENDING, I KNOW MY SHIP WAS WRECKED. My "Bae" turned into a monster hungry for power and stuff so I doubt he and Mare will ever be together in the end of the trilogy unless "I hope" there's some king of evil puppeteer controlling Maven (ehem, Elara) though I doubt that'll happen. I'm gonna miss that shadow that Mare knew. He was already perfect :( As for this issue between Cal and Maven, I still ship Marven for I am loyal though I doubt them ending up together and Cal+Mare ship isn't looking good either. The three of them betrayed and used each other. Shade and I's love story has a brighter future than those three because of how their stories ended up.

I disliked Cal from the start. Cliche'd, boring, the usual 'oh so very noble' crown prince... When Maven came along, I fell head over heels for him, even if I saw from the start that he was going to become a traitor. I really hope that Tori will twist the story in favor for Marven shippers, because, heck, it would make the story even more amazing than it already is.

And also, has anybody made the connection of Thor and Loki to Cal and Maven?

I disagree with you all. I don't really like either of them. Cal, to me, is a bit of an ass, while Maven…well, YOU know. Didn't like him when I started reading the book, still don't like him after. How come I'm the only one on Team Mare and/or Team Have A New Guy Who Isn't An Asshole?
