Each entry in the mini says spell out Thalia -T. The letter after the - is the one that is being spelled in that task. So we use books where the title, authors first or last name, a characters first or last name or the series name start with that letter. The narrator or translators names can be used for audiobooks and translations respectively.

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 609 comments JL wrote: "So for the minis when it says spell out Thalia are we picking books that start with Each letter in the name until we spell out the name or books that have all the letters of that name in the title?"

"the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version."

You can check out all the Mini rules here - May Mini

I copied this from above - it was hidden under the spoiler. :)

Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

How is everyone's weekend going? Had an alarming moment out with the children earlier. Joe was drinking from a glass and then showed me a shard of glass he had in his mouth. The glass had broken while he was drinking. Luckily apart from a small cut on his lip, he was fine!

Navi (nvsahota) | 730 comments Oh my goodness! That is terrifying, Sophie!! I’m glad he’s okay😭

I’m so happy it’s the weekend. Planning on reading for a few hours today!

Audrey Jane | 1815 comments Sophie, that's indeed terrifying, glad he's fine !

Worked double shifts yesterday so took it easy today. However there are some local fesitivities in my town this weekend; at the moment it's karaoke night. As I'm typing this an awful rendition of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is resonating through the whole town. My ears are bleeding.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend !

Audrey Jane | 1815 comments Fyi, I'm interested in both June's BOM. I'm planning to participate and might write DQs. Will decide closer to date.

He was so calm about it, I didn't have a chance to freak out somehow.

Navi - enjoy reading time. I spent a few weeks on Vancouver Island a few years ago and one of my favourite memories is sitting reading in the sun, overlooking the sound.

Audrey - Karaoke shouldn't come out of the building it being sung in. Have had a lot of fun in a soundproof karaoke pod with friends, but no one else needed our 'singing' inflicted on them.

For those of you who haven't seen the BOM for June are:
1st June The Book of Cold Cases
16th June The Witch's Heart

Nominations for July will be opening soon. The 1st is a general adult/non-fiction book and then our theme is 'the sea'. If the book you nominate is pucked we automatically get DQs for it.

Audrey Jane | 1815 comments Unfortunately the karaoke event is outdoors. I live next to the park they are holding it under giant tents. That soundproof karaoke pod sounds fun! Never done that before. Do you have a go to karaoke song ?

message 161: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 405 comments Apologies for responding to things that had already been answered. I think I must've had a GR glitch. It looked like no one had been chatting at all. Then when I logged out and logged back in there were a dozen new posts! Anyway...have a great weekend--with or without karaoke!

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments oooooh... A Book of Cold Cases... I want to read that one. I am currently #294 in line for the audiobook, so not likely to get that in time. #4 in line for a print copy at the library, so maybe before the end of the challenge for that one.

Argh, no escape! Hope it didn't go on too late.

It was good fun and took away from the stress of not being a good singer/not wanting to perform. I don't have a go to song at all. Don't do it often enough so tend to go with 1990/2000s pop.

294 for audio is insane!

I've requested the ebooks from my library and the wait is 4 weeks and 7 weeks for them. Fingers crossed they come through in time. Might not be able to do DQs though if I don't know I'll have it.

message 166: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments I've volunteered for DQs for Witch's Heart. It's showing as available from the library so I've reserved it. Just waiting on it making its way to my local.

Unfortunately no copies of Book of Cold Cases anywhere and it's still too expensive to buy so unlikely I can take part in that one. It's a pity as it's a book I really want to read. Will maybe investigate the audio as I have a credit kicking around.

message 167: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments @Sophie, that is scary. He was lucky to only have a small cut, it could've been a lot worse.

@Audrey, listening to strangers do karaoke is my idea of hell. Hopefully the other festivities will be a bit more enjoyable for you

I seem to be having an Austen-athon this weekend. I discovered Brit box had Sanditon, Persuasion, Northanger and Emma. I figure I may as well get my binge watching done this weekend in between sorting out the garden and doing some baking.

message 168: by Insiyah (new)

Ouch! I hope you didn't get too soaked by your neighbour.

message 172: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments No not too wet, more of a shock than anything as had headphones in and didn't even realise my neighbour was in the garden.

It's looking like I'm going to have to instigate a book buying ban as smoke and a burning smell coming from the lawnmower, I guess I'm going to be buying a new one.

Today is not going well.

Is anyone else struggling with what to pick to read this week?

My audiobook for the way to work, I finished last week and have replaced it with podcasts. Don't have as easy a sub in for my actual reading. Though I suppose I could get on with The Pillars of the Earth which is this year's weighty tome (1000p+ that we do a year long group read of).

I haven’t read most of those and it's been a few years since the last Ellie Griffiths. So many books, nowhere near enough time.

message 187: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments picked up a print copy of the Travelling Cat book, so maybe I can get started on it this week (I read too slow to keep up with DQs otherwise). Trying not to read too much before the challenge officially starts so that I can use my books for the challenge.
Might read a graphic novel tonight.

message 188: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5687 comments Mod
Please don't start this week if you want to read it for the challenge. We can't use anything that you start befire the challenge starts.

We know that people can struggle to keep up with the DQs so you have a month from the start of the BOM to read and answer for points. There are normally a lot of people (including me) running behind!

That rule is so infuriating for me right now because i'm itching to get my hands on A Little Life, but alas...

message 190: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5687 comments Mod
If we don't have it, people would stockpile a lot of books with a chapter left to read just after the challenge starts which skews the numbers (or it definitely did before the team targets).

message 191: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments I thought we could start the book but couldn't read more than 50%. Maybe that was in a previous incarnation of the challenge. I can wait for it, no problem.

message 192: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments It's that weird pre challenge phase isn't it, where you feel like you shouldn't start anything substantial.

I'm trying to finish off a couple of library books that are due back and another book I'm partway through. I do have a couple of books I preordered arriving tomorrow so it's going to be tough not diving straight in.

Oh no that is scary! We had a pretty good weekend we are at my mom's house for the week because the twins are doing swim lessons. I can not wait to make my list of books for the mini challenges!

I have loved getting caught up on all of everyone's intro post and can not wait to get to know all of you a little better. I have loved seeing all of the different genres people enjoy in this group and can not wait to get some new recommendations.

Hope you all are having a great Tuesday!

Those look great, but the last 2 have already been claimed on the planning SS. If you have access, it would be really helpful if you could add them to the Books tab, including the mini-code so that we can avoid duplicating tasks where possible.
