Answers Ch. 11-15

1. What do you think of Heart of Stone?
Wish I could master it. Seems to be a very good mental exercise everybody should know. Clear thinking is a very much needed asset.

2. What do you think of the conversation between Ben and Kvothe's parents about Chandrian? What do you think of Blue Flame?
Chandrian - seven. Are they the seven bad people who did not agree to convert to the God's way. But I remember only 6. Anyway I associate Chandrian with evil. Perhaps his parents thought Ben knew more about the Chandrian legend. Each Chandrian associated with one black magic property each, so that the properties add or subtract depending upon the number of them present.
Blue flame was attributed many properties, such as, associated with CHandrians, showing up bad air in mines, or the presence of faeries or bad creatures. Noone knew exactly what it was, or so I feel.
I also think Kvothe;s parents, especially father, differed with Ben as regard to a few aspects of Chandrians.


3. What do you think of Bast and Chronicler's first meeting?
3. They antagonised each other at the start. And I am at a loss how CHronicler recognised Bast to be something else than he portrayed to be. If not for Kote, they would have ended up with a murder, whose, I am not sure.


4. What do you thimk of Kvothe's first attempt to call the wind? Do you think Ben should not have taught him so much for his age and it was his faukt somewhere in this?
It was effective to some extent, but disastrous. If not for Ben's timely intervention, Kvothe would have ended up paying with his life. He must have not realized the power of the wind if coupled to his breath.
Ben is at fault here. It was he who induced Kvothe into drastic measures by repeated questioning and refuting his attempts at answer. After all he was too young, and moreover, Ben did not really teach him about the side effects of power, other than through experiments.


5. Kvothe and Abenthy or Bast and Kote, which pair do you like the most and why?
5. I like both pairs. But I am more interested in Bast and Kote, as there is some unexplained mystery there. Bast does not appear human, though he is well controlled and befriended by Kvothe. I am eager to know how and where they met.
whereas Ben and Kvothe is an open chapter, which I have already read and understood to some extent. Only thing I am curious about, is to know whether they meet again in future.


6. A lot of things happened in these 5 chapters..... Discussion on Chandrian, calling of wind by Kvothe and Ben's going away....

I have no complaints with the pace of the book. I am enjoying the events - the past, the present, as well as the various stories which are intricately wound in. I like this form of narration, where the POV moves from person to person, as well as time to time..
These events have a future significance in shaping up Kvothe's story and life, or so I feel.

The chandrian are really cool. They have been portrayed well.

I like the point ben made about how people make fun of mythical creatures of other regions. But no one no where makes fun of the Chandrian

I was surprised to find out that there are more powerful creatures even they are afraid of

One of my favorite This book is. I just loved how Kvothe was written. And the POV.

About Heart Of Stone, (view spoiler)[I love the concept about the Heart Of Stone. Its a real-life thing. Sometimes all that you need is a clear mind to focus, and the Heart Of stone teaches you that. Its amazing how Rothfuss makes use of daily life principles and invigorates them into his magic. :) (hide spoiler)]

Reading all these spoilers sent me back to the time I was reading Kvothe. He is one of a kind. Makes me want to read it all over again ^_^

So far, I think it is co-incidental. Though Ben's staying back was abrupt. I never saw it coming. I never thought he was the type to be influenced by a dame, that too of such a short acquaintance.

2. What do you think of Haliax and Cinder? Who/what do you think they were?
I am not sure who they are , though Haliax seems the Alpha male and Cinder somehow bound or indebted to him. I am not even sure whether they are the ones who killed Kvothe's parents, whether they belong to Chandrians, or are just a warring group of people. Nothing more was mentioned of them. I also wonder that if they were the killers, why they left Kvothe alone. Agreed, they say that he is not the one who sang about Chandrians, but still, they killed innocent people of the camp and may have killed Kvothe too if he was there.
3. What do you think of four doors of mind?
A very nice concept. Somewhat true even in the ordinary realm of life. I liked the way it was described - sleep, unconsciousness, loss of memory, death. And it is a scientific fact that people tend to sleep more when depressed (though insomnia too can happen) and amnesia occurs after extreme stress.

4. The only thing which Kvothe have, is his father's lute. He plays it in the forests and all those tunes he plays shows his passion. Do you think his lute will play a big role in his life?
I think so. But have to read further and find out. If not the same lute, atleast any sort of music may play a major part in his life.
5. What do you think of Jake and Seth, and Pike?
Jake and Seth were good men. If I were in Kvothe's place, I would surely have accepted their invitation at the first instant itself, the coward I am. But I see that Kvothe also had second thoughts after he suffered hardships at Pike's hands. Pike was horrible, the quintessential bully, whom I have encountered in many a fictional book, thankfully never in real life. It is better if Kvothe keeps away from Pike. One thingI don;t understand is that why Kvothe did not use sympathy to escape from Pike.

Not me. I am okay with the narration.

Yes at times even I felt the narration dragged on too long. Especially second half in the University.

And I already know from Akshay's comments that Kvothe is never going to disappoint. This book is all the way KVOTHE only.:P

@Manju, I am almost at the midway mark, Kvothe firmly ensconced in the university. He's seemingly a little bit cocky, but I am enjoying the story.

I am at the part where Ambrose cheats him with a penny candle and gets him banned from Archives.
I am a bit envious at Kvothe as he makes me feel a dullard, who is neglecting her duties. :/

Since it is first person narration he will always be there.

So far, I haven;t come across any character which I hate, but there are a few characters who had only a couple of pages to them. They are either very minor ones, or perhaps will do a comeback later on. I have to wait and see.

Problem with first person narration is, Kvothe overshadows everyone else.

And the way he makes everyone envious, is another reason I admire him. Bwahahaha! XD

I take inspiration from Kvothe while trying to play Guitar. Sometimes when I almost give up, he is the one thing that comes to my head. :P

So you see how I naturally love him. :P

@Polo, For a book that has a musician for a hero, Rothfuss did not write a single song in the book.

@Anirudh, the book is full of ditties. I enjoyed reading/humming those. :P

But no songs. Even GRRM managed to put a song or two. Kvothe claims to be such a good musician and song writer. One of the Edema Ruh. But no songs for the reader.

About Denna:

(view spoiler)[I'm reserving her judgement until later. But somewhat I like her. I know she gets annoying when she leaves all of a sudden, but Rothfuss describes her as being like the wind. You can't tame the wind, it flows as it wishes. And I love the fact that she doesn't let anyone get a hold on her. She weaves a world of her own and is happy in that. She is independent, and that makes her likable to me.

There isn't much of Denna in NoTW, so I don't want to judge. So far I don't exactly dislike her.

About the music.. Wasn't she the one who sang Aloine's part in the Eolian with Kvothe?

That said, I love Auri the most!! She overruled all other women!!! ^_^ (hide spoiler)]
