But they were both very popular books, by very famous authors.

True. When you gave the clues I knew instantly what they were.

So then is it Lobstergirl's guess with message 249?

Ah. I think Lobstergirl's message 249 and one of mine must have crossed in the post. I didn't see it until you pointed it out. No, that's not the one. (view spoiler). The one I'm after was 1987, and only -could- be about fruit.

Extra clue - Female British author. Her most famous book was about oranges (but they're not the only things). This 1987 novel could be the name of another fruit.

(view spoiler)?"

Sorry, I think this got lost between page refreshes and one of my posts. No, it's not this one. But you're very, very close. 1987, not 1989, and only -could- be about fruit.

There are thousands of writers I've never heard of. I keep discovering new ones all the time. That's half the fun. I'm sure you have read lots of books that the rest of us haven't. And you have seen things that we never will. And have been places, known people, done things, and thought about things, that are entirely outside the experience of others. You have nothing to say sorry about.

Kinda. I've been keeping a "what's current" near the end of the thread (as I stated in the instructions in the first message)... and when that's no longer current (ie: new stumpers, and/or a lot of correct guesses) I post a revised one. Sometimes I've just been going back and editing that post; deleting one or possibly two from the message - if there's not been a lot of action to move the post too far back from the end of the thread.

People didn't like it when I was deleting those messages, so now I just blank them out with a 'no longer current', so it doesn't confuse people who're just viewing this for the first time...

Trouble is, there's thousands of books that more or less fit this description. There's nothing in the clue to differentiate them. Also true of clues 18 and 25. They're too general.

Does it show? I'm trying not to make the clues -too- cryptic, but at the same time construct them so they positively identify one specific book, and no other.

I'm sorry about that. They were intended to be quite vague because if I changed it I'm pretty sure somebody would immediately guess it. For both my stumpers they are extremely popular books and I believe a large majority of people have read them.
