☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I decided to start For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, #5) by Kim Harrison I read the physical book a few years back but I started listening to the series in audio a couple of years ago then stopped at this one & hadn't got a chance to continue. Soooooo...here I go. I love the narrator-Marguerite Gavin.

message 53: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 64 comments I've finished Lover Mine. Great book!.

Now I have started Cinder. Both the book and the narration seem pretty good so far.

I'm not sure how I feel about it just yet.

Gavin | 64 comments I have finished Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer by Marissa Meyer.

Really enjoyed this book. It had far more to the plot than just a re-telling of the Cinderella fairytale. It's a pity book two has not been released yet!.

The narrator had a very young voice and this worked for most of the characters, but not all. On the whole though, the narration from Rebecca Soler was good.

Also finished The Running Man by Stephen King by Stephen King. I'm not a big King fan, and despite a few issues with this book I still enjoyed it. I may even read The Long Walk by Stephen King sometime in the near future.

Now I'm onto Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder by Maria V. Snyder. It was one of the first audiobooks I ever bought so I am looking forward to finally listening to it.

Amanda, How are you enjoying The Rook by Daniel O'Malley I bought this during my last Audible splurge but have not got round to listening to it yet. I do have high hopes for it!.

Library Lady 📚 | 64 comments I finished One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich , Two for the Dough (Stephanie Plum, #2) by Janet Evanovich , and Three to Get Deadly (Stephanie Plum, #3) by Janet Evanovich . Now I'm listening to Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult and still working on Moby-Dick by Herman Melville .

Michael Leadingham I just finished up insurgent, and started The Immortal RulesSo far I'm about half way, and it's really an awesome read. Im hooked.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Did you read Kagawa's Iron Fey series Michael? It got great reviews but I wasn't crazy about it like most people. I wonder if I would like this book better.

I finally started listening to Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer . I'm not crazy about the narrator so far but I'm only about 30 minutes into it so that could change.

That's on my list. Glad to hear it's good.

I've got three books going on right now. The Quiet American, The Things They Carried, and The Red Queen.

Audra (audraelizabeth) | 28 comments I started Basketball Jones by E. Lynn Harris the other day.

It took me a little while to become accustomed to Rebecca Soler's narration. She does sound very young!.

I'm currently listening to Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth and Paladin of Souls (Chalion, #2) by Lois McMaster Bujold
I'm just over half way through both books, and both have been very enjoyable. If I was forced to pick one over the other then it would be Paladin of Souls. Chalion is such a richly realized world, while in comparison the world of Divergent seems a little vague.

I'll definitely add some of Julie Kagawa's books to my to-read list.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I'm just over the halfway mark on Cinder & I'm loving it. I think I expected it to be more of a true Cinderella tale - with the ball & the fairy godmother, etc. I'm pleased to find out that there are some similarities but it's really it's own story. I've gotten used to the narrator now & I'm enjoying her as well.

Early thank you for picking this for me Gavin :)

message 66: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 64 comments I have just finished The Paid Companion by Amanda Quick it was more humorous and light hearted in tone than I was expecting. Very enjoyable, I'll definitely try another Amanda Quick book in the future.
The narrator, Michael Page, was excellent. He had a wide range of voices and not a single one was irritating.

Now I'm onto Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1) by Chloe Neill .

message 67: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C Sorry I have been MIA.

Nikki - I enjoyed the narration on Sarah's Key. The narrator, when she speaks French, is just lovely. I watch the movie last week and as always, the book is better. It helped to read the book first as the movie skipped over a lot of information.

I am now listening to The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley and am loving the narrator and most importantly, the story. This was a $4.95 purchase on Audible. Glad I did it. :)

message 68: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I got Sarah's Key on audio through the library but I was in the middle of another book & forgot to go on & download it to my player. By the time I remembered it had expired.

I'll have to check out The Rose Garden. I really enjoyed the other book I just read by her.

message 69: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Finished Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer yesterday & really liked it. I agree Gavin, I wish book 2 was out already.

Started Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, #4) by Jennifer Estep this morning.

Jennifer, I went ahead & used one of my credits to get The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley . I hope to listen to it soon.

message 70: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Gavin - I really liked The Rook took me forever to get thru it not because it wasn't good just had limited audio time. Yesterday I finished The Devil Inside - Wow what a dark dark story that is. The narration by Mark Bramhall was fantastic and had it not been him I might not have made it though. I actually really liked the book just found it very difficult in places to listen to. Has anybody else listened to that one?

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed The Rook because I plan to listen to it sometime this month.

Did you mean The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock?. I have not read it but it does sound very dark. It's not the sort of book that normally interests me, but I think I'll add this to my to-read list. It's about time I tried something new!.

message 72: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Yes sorry I meant The Devil All The Time bad job of multitasking there! Thanks. I would recommend it just be prepared for some cringe worthy scenes.

message 73: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I am so glad you got it Nikki. I don't think you will be disappointed. I am enjoying it a lot.

message 74: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 64 comments I've finished Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1) by Chloe Neill and Friday Night Bites (Chicagoland Vampires, #2) by Chloe Neill . I thought the books were good but not great. I'm unsure if I should continue with the rest of the series or not. Does it get better?. I was not a big fan of the narrator either.

Now I'm listening to Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury It's narrated by the author Ray Bradbury, and not particularly well. I wish authors would just leave the narration to the professionals.

Also starting The Rook by Daniel O'Malley .

message 75: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I started The Expected One (Magdalene Line Trilogy, #1) by Kathleen McGowan this morning on my way in. I love the narrator and the story is has captured me right from the beginning. I can't wait to get back in the car and listen some more.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Gavin...I was worried about the narrator on the Chicagoland series. I didn't care much for the sample I heard. I'm not sure whether to tell you to continue or not. I love the series but I read the physical books. If you aren't crazy about them by the 2nd book then they may not be a series you will enjoy. The first 3 books were my favorite. The 4th upset me greatly (big plot twist) and the 5th seemed to be more of a filler book. I'm waiting patiently on the next one...hoping it's back to the story/characters I love.

I listened to Fareheit 451 and really enjoyed it. I didnt even realize it was read by the author, but generally I like it when the author reads the book.

I just finished The Things They Carried and just loved it.

message 79: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 64 comments Lena wrote: "I listened to Fareheit 451 and really enjoyed it. I didnt even realize it was read by the author, but generally I like it when the author reads the book. "

Lena, it's possible your version of Fahrenheit 451 was not narrated by Ray Bradbury. There are a least four different versions of the audiobook available at Audible alone. The Christopher Hurt narrated version seems to be the most popular version by far. The fact that the Bradbury narrated version is one hour and twenty minutes longer than the Hurt version of the same book hints at the massive differences in style.

I've since listened to the Audible samples of the other versions, and they all sound as if they would have been a better buy. I suppose that's what I get for not paying attention to what I buy!.

I can understand the appeal of an author narrating their own book. Because of course, their interpretation of the characters and plot will be as true as possible. That said I've never really enjoyed any of these self narrated audiobooks', so if possible, I'll try to avoid them in the future.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Just finished the audio of Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, #4) by Jennifer Estep and enjoyed getting back into this series. This book was a bit slower than the previous but I got caught up in the story just as quickly as I did the first books.

Started the audio of The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley and it's taking me a bit to switch narrating styles. I'm not gonna say much about it yet but I think I will like it once it gets started.

message 81: by Dhfan4life (new)

Dhfan4life | 15 comments Finished Dead Witch Walking this morning(the best I can that is, 6 tracks went unheard likely do to deep scratches on the cd) and have to say that I think I can become a fan of Gavin's. But for the hollows series....jury is out on that one. I'll try the second book but that first one just seemed so scatter brained to me.

I also had a quick question. I thought I saw a thread for it around here some place. Can't seem to find it when I'm looking for it now though. But what is the difference between abridged and unabridged audio? And actually what does these terms mean?

message 82: by Audra (last edited Jun 24, 2012 02:00PM) (new)

Audra (audraelizabeth) | 28 comments Finished The Grapes of Wrath the other day and starting Sense and Sensibility. I'm going to try listening to it as I read it because I sometimes get lost in books like this.

message 83: by Michael (new)

Michael Leadingham I'm on about page 215 of the first days(as the world dies trilogy) by Rhiannon Frater. So far I really love it, but I'm a sucker for a good zombie story. Not to sure about the characters yet. I just don't feel a great connection so far. The narrator is pretty good though. I'll post an update once I'm finished.

message 84: by ☻Nikki☻ (last edited Jun 24, 2012 09:58PM) (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I picked up Sense and Sensibility for free from Sync too. I've never read it but I enjoyed Pride and Predjudice so hopefully I will this as well.

I am 3 hours away from finishing The Rose Garden and I Love this book. It is just a really sweet, romantic read. I can't wait to find out how she wraps it all up. As of right now, I really can't see how she will do it.

message 85: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 64 comments I have finished listening to Crave which I really enjoyed. It's the tenth J.R. Ward book I have listened to and I have not been disappointed yet.

Now I'm listening to Vampire Academy. I have heard a lot of good things about the series.

It's been a good week for free audiobooks. I picked up Sense and Sensibility and Irises from Audio Sync, and Vixen and The Chicago Way from Random House Audio.

Dhfan4life | 15 comments Thanks Nikki. I'm surprised by the differences there. Going to make sure all my audio books are unabridged. I like being read to word for word. The other way sounds like they could be making stuff up.

message 88: by Gavin (new)

I'm listening to an abridged version of Paradise by Judith McNaught and while there is nothing made up, I'm familiar enough with the story to notice the massive chunks that have been edited out. It plays havoc with the pacing of the plot.

message 89: by Dhfan4life (new)

Dhfan4life | 15 comments That sucks Gavin. I guess it is good for cliff notes version. But still I would feel cheated if chunks of the plot was missing.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to enjoy the abridged versions of books I consider 'fun'. I do still think it could be a good idea for some of those stuffy old classics. A little less description and a little more action surely cannot be a bad thing?.

Too true. Hence I was thinking of the cliff notes version. You get the meat you are after without the excess detailing. And come to think of it if there is abridged version of Little Women, I might actually finish that.

I hate when that happens Amanda. Always leaves me unsure how to rate or review a story when it is like that.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I'm listening to Her Royal Spyness (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #1) by Rhys Bowen and it's okay. The narrator is really good but so far the story just isn't yanking my chain :D I'm hoping it gets a bit better since I'm only about 2 hours into it. I happened to get this one free through Audible a few months back so it's no huge deal if it isn't great.

message 94: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 64 comments I've just finished The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy . It was an enjoyable listen.

The book first came to my attention when I searching for more audiobooks narrated by the excellent Michael Page. As it happens I would not have been able to buy the Page version until September, so I decided to give the Librivox version a chance. Glad I did!. It was narrated superbly by Karen Savage and I found very little difference between it and a professional recording.

message 95: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I've not checked out any of the Librivox books. I'm leery of them since I don't know whether the narrators are any good or not.

message 96: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 64 comments I'm no expert on the Librivox audiobooks. I've only tried three and of those this is the first time I have made it past the first hour.

Karen Savage also narrates a few Jane Austen audiobooks so if I enjoy Sense and Sensibility, I'll give those a try as well.

Since the Librivox recordings are free it never hurts to give them a try!. You can also sample them on the Librivox website, which is useful as there is sometimes multiple different versions of the same book available

I've downloaded a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray and Frankenstein from Librivox, so I'll be sure to mention it if they turn out to be any good.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I am an hour away from finishing Her Royal Spyness and I will be glad to finish it. It's not a horrible book but, unless something amazing happens in this last hour, I will be lucky to give it 3 stars. It's defintely more of a light mystery but I'm pretty sure I've figured out the culprit. Plus, I never really warmed up to the heroine. She's funny at times but kinda boring. I will say the narrator does a really nice job but that won't make me rate it any higher. Sigh...oh well, like I said before, it was free :)

Library Lady 📚 | 64 comments I'm listening to The Gunslinger, the first in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I read it about ten years ago and didn't find it that absorbing, so I never read any others in the series. Now I'm going to try to read the whole series, and I thought listening to a few of them might help me make it through.

message 99: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I'm only about 90 minutes into The Kitchen House but so far it is very engaging. I am still going to wait til I'm a little further in before I start discussing it on the discussion thread. I hope everyone else is ready to discuss it soon as well. :D

Jennifer C I am listening to The Third Circle (The Arcane Society, #4) by Amanda Quick . The narrator is ok, I am starting to get bored with this series. Im glad I got it on audio so I could cross it off my TBR list and donate my hard cover copy - this is not a keeper.
