message 201: by Brodiew (new)

Brodiew I just completed Davis Bunn's Lion of Babylon. At first I was unsure of the the author's beginning, but was quickly drawn in to this Christian themed political/suspense thriller. It is too bad the the lead character, Mark Royce is the novel's least engaging character. The side characters are more richly drawn and interesting. I highly recommend it.

Gavin | 64 comments I'm listening to The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I'm nearly finished and feel confidant in saying this is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read/listened too.

Nick Podehl's narration has almost been as good as the book!.

It's so good that it makes 27 hours seem entirely too short. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I've started reading it twice now and had to put it down both times. Sometimes some books are like that for me though, I have to start reading them several times before they really grab me and start pulling me along. I've heard so many people say it is an excellent book so I'm sure I'll get through it eventually.

How far into did you get?. I found the first chapter a little slow but enjoyed it from the second chapter onwards.

Still even the best books can't please everybody, most people seem to love Lord of the Rings but I hated it!.

message 214: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Was on the road for almost 5 hours yesterday so I finished When Passion Rules by Johanna Lindsey . Even though it was a bit predictable, I still enjoyed it. Sometimes I just need a frivolous read. :D

Started Spider’s Revenge (Elemental Assassin, #5) by Jennifer Estep as well. So far, it picks up right where the last book left off but it's kinda ho-hum at the moment. The animosity between Gin & Mab Monroe is getting a little tedious. I hope it picks up though. I really do enjoy this series.

message 216: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (nocturnalcherry) Finished Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Starting Girl who played with Fire tomorrow.

message 217: by Nan (new)

Nan Kizziah | 26 comments I am listening to a book I think will never end. The Fall of Hyperion is one of the few books I've ever read where I can't decide if I love it or hate it. There are times I want to tell the author to STFU because he goes on and on and on and I'm ready for him to stop. I'm not sure I am understanding what he's meaning to say. But the story is compelling and I really care about what happens to the characters. The world he has created is byzantine in its complexity. I have been challenged by this book, and yet, I'm still not sure it's worth it. Or maybe it's one of the best books I've ever read. I'm not sure.

message 218: by Jennifer C (new)

I listened to "The Chaperone" as well, and loved it. It is a little slow at the beginning, but I'd stay stick with it.

message 226: by Poonam (new)

Poonam | 35 comments I'm listening to Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor . So far I like it. It's just starting to get serious and I'm a little less into it. But that might because I haven't been listening to it in a focused way. I know that people have liked it before. So it must be good?

message 227: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 40 comments I'm having trouble finishing the books I've started. I'm about 20% done with The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart by Mathias Malzieu , halfway through The City of Ember (Book of Ember, #1) by Jeanne DuPrau and about 20% through Labyrinth (Languedoc Trilogy, #1) by Kate Mosse . I've checked out Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer and The Curse of Chalion (Chalion, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold from the library, and they're both due on 9/1 -- but I've also taken the Here's Five challenge, so I need to read The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield next. >_< There just aren't enough hours in the day for reading!

Jennifer C I'm going to start The End of the Affair by Graham Greene on my way to work tomorrow.

message 231: by Robert (new)

Robert Delikat (imedicineman) | 9 comments I highly recommend The Curse of Chalion and The Thirteenth Tale. I read the latter around the time of reading/listening to The Forgotten Garden and could not say which one was better. There are two narrators who are absolutely superb.

The Curse of Chalion is my favorite of Lois McMaster Bujold and just plain one of my favorite fantasies of all time. Again, the narration does the book justice. Neither will disappoint.

I love Jim Dale. I listened to him narrate the entire Harry Potter series. I listened to a bit of The Night Circus after downloading from Audible last night, it sounds very intriguing. But I just started The Name of the Wind, so it will have to wait a little bit. :(

Lisa Tsuruda | 16 comments I'm also listening to 'Daughter of Smoke and Bone' by Laini Taylor. I really like it so far, or it just might be the reader is great! She is able to create the very interesting locales of the novel (Prague, the Middle East, "Elsewhere", etc). I'm in it for the long haul!!!! BTW, How do I add in pictures in my comments (I'm techno-challenged!) :)

message 238: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Lisa, look right above the comment box. You will see "add book/author". If you click on it then you will see a search box. Type in the name of the book and notice at the bottom you can click on link or cover. If you click link then you will only get a link to a book. If you click cover then you will get an actual picture of the book cover. Just click search then click add. Hope this makes sense :)

message 239: by Brodiew (new)

Brodiew I just started listening to The Race. It is narrated by Scott Brick who has done exception work on many of Cussler's works. Dirk Pitt aside, I have quickly become a fan of this new series featuring early 20th Century Van Dorn Detective Isaac Bell. I highly recommend them on audio for adventure seekers.

message 243: by Christine (new)

Christine | 63 comments I finished A Discovery of Witches and then downloaded book 2 Shadow of Night to my Nook. There was a $20. price difference since it's such a new book. Anyway, funny thing I noticed last night is that while reading Shadow of Night I can still hear the narrator and the character voices in my head. :)

message 244: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I wish I read them back to back. :) I am in the middle of Shadow of Night now. I am enjoying it.

message 245: by Gin (new)

Gin Listening to Sacrificial Magic (Downside Ghosts, #4) by Stacia Kane Awesome Narrator!
This is one of those series that is most likely better in audio than actually reading

message 246: by Denise (new)

Denise | 38 comments I just started A Dog's Journey by W. Bruce Cameron this morning in the car and it had me crying before I got through the first disc. I lost both of my Shepherds last year, so I'm still pretty tender-hearted when I read stories about dogs. I see that this is a sequel to A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron , so I'll have to look for that book.

And a biography of PT Barnum, which I just started. It's in my car, and sadly, I can't remember the name of it! I'll figure it out next time I go somewhere.
