message 401: by Barb (new)

Barb I'm finishing up knitting projects while listening to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, read by Carrington MacDuffie. Not sure how I managed to get through 12 years of grammar and high school without reading this book. Francie's story is so moving and the narrator has the turn of the century Brooklyn dialect down beautfully as well as the various foreign accents.

message 409: by Christine (new)

Christine | 63 comments I am almost finished with Fall of Giants by Ken Follett.
I am absolutely enjoying the narrator, he brings the story and the characters to life and makes it easier to keep straight who is what nationality by the accents he speaks with, and what a great history lesson, I will admit I am not a WW I history buff but I am having no trouble following the happenings when it jumps from the British to the Germans, French, Americans and the Welsh. I have already downloaded the second book.

Lorraine (saanichlori) I'm listening to Mockingjay, the third and final book in the Hunger Games series. Very good so far.

I came across this classic on a Playaway at my library but opted to read the book instead. Maybe I'll start it tonight and try to conjure up a Brooklyn accent from my southern upbringing. Ha ha, that ought to be funny.

This is a good book. I became a fan of Follett with The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End.

Jennifer C I finished At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks yesterday. It wasn't the best Nicholas Sparks book I have read but it was ok. It didn't go the way I thought it would. I gave it three stars.

Not sure when I will start my next audio and what it will be. I will have to think about it.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I just finished Widow’s Web this morning. It was the most recent book in the Elemental Assassin series. I wondered where the author would take the story & I thought she did a good job. I wasn't exactly happy with the ending but I'll be waiting for the next one to see what happens. Since I finished that I decided to start Hexed this afternoon.

April (aprilvoytkokempler) I'm wrapping up Gone With the Wind, but in the meantime started Life of Pi by Yann Martel read by Jeff Woodman with Alexander Marshall. I'm loving it, however, it is gruesome and sad in parts. That is probably the reason I hesitated starting it for so long...I knew it would be hard. Survival at sea (even in fiction) is a hard subject to take.

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Sorry I've been MIA everyone. I've added a 2nd job to my plate & I have not been able to keep up with the group the way I would like. I sometimes get to check it from my phone but I don't like to do much posting from it...too difficult.

I'm at work right now but if I get time I will go ahead & post the poll for the November read. If there are any new recommendations, please go to the nominations thread & add them ASAP so they can be in the running. We will have to do a quick vote since November is almost upon us. Once again, sorry I'm running late.

Christine,
How was Winter of the World as an audio book? There are so many characters...I am on the waiting list at the library for the audio version, I am just wondering if I should switch to the e-version, where I can bookmark sections, keep notes, etc.

I really enjoyed it! The big events of WW II, of course, were included but from a different perspective. I can definitely understand being concerned about the many characters. I had the parents all straight then the kids come along and I had to write some of them down cause mid way through some of them get married etc. I loved the narrator and the story. I'm not really a note taker normally but if you are maybe e book is the way to go. :)
