Lockhart at Walmart

So. I am in a hotel in Indiana where I am working for a few days. (Yesterday John Green and I read at Kids Ink bookstore and then ate cupcakes.  The Nerdfighters who came out to see us were awesome. Yes, they were, as far as I could tell, ALL Nerdfighters. Dressed in T-shirts with like, pictures of John's dog, pictures of John with  mustache, stuff like that, and carrying books that John had signed already and having him sign them again...)

I have the day off today and I am writing writing...

Oh! Fun stuff.

Remember my blog about the Whimsical Bakehouse and the shark cupcake and Karin Slaughter? Well, Karin (or Slaughter, as I prefer to call her when she's not standing in front of me) and the Bakehouse women teamed up to make THE COOLEST CUPCAKE CONTEST EVER because it is the cupcake contest of incredible bloody grossness.   It includes instructions on how to make things like the CUPCAKE OF SKELETAL REMAINS

As you all know (or you do if you've read The Treasure Map of Boys), adorable baked...

More This and That

My friend Sarah Mlynowski's new book, Gimme a Call, is out.  It's Sarah at her best:  awesome and hilarious premise (girl has cell phone that allows her to call her 14 y.o self and try to fix her life by changing the past) --

and there is this great "Dear H.S. Self" thing going on on Twitter, where people give advice to their younger selves.  Click here to read all the entries people have written, including those by Neil Gaiman, Libba Bray, me, Lauren Myracle, John Green, Maureen Johnson...

Lauren

Get Lauren Myracle to come to your school in the fall.  Details here.

I promise, Lauren is more fun than a barrel of monkeys and some M&Ms too.  I've been on tour with her!  I know!

Georgia Peach, Random Buzzers, Vintage Veronica

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks is a Georgia Peach nominee for next year! Click here to see a video about the nominees. Congratulations to Suzanne Collins for Hunger Games' win this time around.

Also, you can win a paperback of Fly on the Wall over at Random Buzzers, with the hot new superhero cover.

In other news, I am reading Vintage Veronica by Erica Perl. It's a first novel by the picture book author of the awesomely addictive Chicken Butt.   For anyone who loves vintage...

Drama Books

YA author Karen Healy makes a list of theater novels for teenagers, including Dramarama and Maureen Johnson's Suite Scarlett -- but also a lot of others that sound great!

In other news, I am deep in the rewrite trenches.  Every author has books that go easy and books that go INSANELY HARD.  The one I am working on is one of those.  I think I am changing every single sentence and the entire structure and most of the plot. I mention this because I think it is nice to know that other writers...

Shark cupcake, teaching, etc.

Here, on Paul O. Zelinsky's blog, is my Whimsical Bakehouse custom-made Spark the shark cupcake.

Sometimes my job is just so cool. Right now I am in a DORM ROOM at the VT college novel-writing workshop where I appear to be on faculty.  I have to give a lecture explaining HOW TO WRITE A BOOK.

This is challenging for me because I forget how every time and panic. Maybe I will tell the students that!

This morning I heard a great lecture by Uma Krishnaswami on scene structure (plus Uma is SO...
