Our Work Has Value Too

I recently tried to have a conversation with someone about e-piracy. I went into this already in a hurt mood because I’d been dealing with some unfriendly people. Guess you could say my back was already up and when I get upset, sometimes my conversation reflects that. I’m not so great with argumentative conversation.

So today, I’m feeling kind of down. There’s so much work that goes into making a book. Research, honing the craft, hours and hours of writing, editing…not to mention the cost of promotion. And it’s not just authors who are working so hard to make a living at this. The publishers, editors, agents–we all put in incredible hours hoping it works.

This work has little value to some.

So today, I’m just linking to a post I wrote not too long ago on what e-piracy feel like to authors.

Turned In a Book

scream.jpg

Me right now. Feeling a combination of extreme happiness and relief for making a deadline mixed with a bit of panic because I had no feedback whatsoever on this book. It’s nearly impossible to look at your own work objectively, so there are a few creepy nerves vying for all my attention. Is it good? Does it suck? Normally, I’d have my lovely CP, Rachel Vincent, working on an urban fantasy with me, but I didn’t leave myself enough time on this one. I’d also have my agent, Miriam Kriss, taking a look at it before it goes out. But I changed the entire planned plot of this book mid book. Yes, you read that right. Mid book.

So… now I sit back and wait for my editor’s opinion.

Wait, no. I have another deadline, a print galley to check over and rewrites on a new “still secret” book deal coming in any day now. I’ll be too busy to be nervous. This is good. ;)

Embracing the Chaos

There is nothing like waking in the middle of the night, looking up into a dark room and realizing the last three chapters of a book due in four days are wrong. Completely wrong. So… as you can probably guess, I didn’t sleep much. I also had my laptop open soon after seven a.m. this morning, trying to figure out what to do.

Strangely, I’m not panicking at this point. It’s ten a.m. and I’m still in my pjs and have already written about a thousand words that didn’t work either. I’ll have to throw them out. My house is not even close to being in the shape I like, but I’ve been buried, so I’m learning to accept that occasionally, the carpet doesn’t have to be vacuumed. The Oklahoma spring has been full of hail and frost and the veggie garden we put in too early has managed to survive, but my lack of weeding might change that soon…

It’s a weird peaceful mood despite the chaos of deadline and messy home. It’s Mother’s Day and my husband is making me breakfast and taking care of the laundry so I can continue with the book. The smell of sizzling bacon and hot coffee has me closing my eyes and inhaling deeply often. I called my mother this morning and she sounded cheerful as she was leaving for breakfast with my father and their friends. It made me smile to know my mother is enjoying the day despite the rain-check I had to give her because of the deadline. My daughter and I sent each other funny text messages last night and even though she told her father on me for using him and janky in the same sentence, I still think she’s the best daughter a mother could want. My son spent a long day working behind the stage on shows at his school yesterday and called me for emergency food for him and a friend. I liked knowing that he understood he could rely on me. And then, when he got home late last night, his poor hands red from rope burn, he was sweetly excited about the nice paycheck he’d earned and about being called back for more shows. He smiled at me like I’m the best Mom in the world.

So no, my book timeline isn’t where it should be and my vegetable garden is full of weeds I’ll have to tackle eventually and I’m pretty sure the laundry pile is spilling into the next room…but you know what? I’m a lucky woman.

Fun with Lists & Rank at Amazon

Dweller on the Threshold has been hanging out in the top 20 at Amazon for a few days. It’s hard to concentrate on anything else and I have a freaking CLOSE deadline on a book. I’ve waited a long, long time to see one of my books do this. But… I was in the top 20 of science fiction and futuristic. Dweller is urban fantasy w/romance. My publisher had it moved into the correct genre today and yes, I dropped out of the top 20 as expected, but Dweller is still doing well!

I have to share though. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to see my book right there with two of my favorite authors. Patricia Briggs and Kim Harrison! If I’m this excited to be hanging out online with such company, can you imagine how I’ll be when this is in bookstores? LOL.

Word of Mouth

Dweller on the Treshold72lg Dweller on the Threshold is staying discounted at both Amazon ($4.24)  and

Barnes and Noble ($4.95)

Some really nice reviews coming in. Yes, I’m still reading them. Yes, I know it can be painful. But… it’s so very, very rewarding when you get to see that something you wrote entertained someone. :)

http://vampirebookclub.net/review-dweller-on-the-threshold-by-rinda-elliott-beri-odell-1/

Dweller on the Threshold has everything I love about urban fantasy: strong worldbuilding, a kickass heroine, a solid and entertaining group of supporting characters, and enough smolder to set a room on fire.”

http://fiktshunafterdark.com/2013/04/01/dweller-on-the-threshold-review/

“It was witty and clever. The premise was definitely different – in a great way. The characters were not your typical character archetypes. The enemy – the dweller on the threshold – was more than a little bit scary.”

Also, my book got a mention in USA Today. I’m thrilled. We didn’t get to do a lot of early promo on this book, so every mention helps. :)
