WHSmith and Kobo Stab Indies in the Back

WHSmiths and Kobo have messed up and indie authors are paying the price. They are quite clear that they disapprove of erotica concerning rape, incest and bestiality, yet allowed such books onto their site. As soon as they came under fire for their abuse themed titles, Kobo pulled all self-published books. They plan to reinstate them after they've conducted an investigation.

Why this is very wrong

- Kobo should have had an effective vetting system in place to begin with, if they want to practise...

World Mental Health Day - We Need to Talk

It's World Mental Health Day and campaigns such as Time to Change are urging people to talk about mental health.

Do you know somebody who suffers from a mental health problem? Yes you do. One in four people are affected.

Why not take the time to ask your friends, colleagues and family how they are? Just knowing that somebody cares can make a huge difference to somebody who's suffering.

Here are some tips on supporting a friend with a mental health problem:

- regularly ask how he or she is doing

-...

Snotacular Travel Game (For Kids and Big Kids)

Want something funny to play on long journeys? How about making up snotacular place names?

1. Think of Funny Words

Think of words that makes you laugh, or even better, words that makes you go 'ugh'. Suitable words include 'bogie', 'slime' and 'sausage' but you can come up with your own.

2. Look for Real Place Names on Sign Posts

Look around for sign posts. Read the place names.

Do you notice any patterns? For example: 'Falmouth', 'Plymouth' and 'Exmouth' all end in 'mouth'.

If you don't see any pat...

I'm Coming to Kill You! (Or so The Sun would have you believe)

Watch out folks - today, The Sun published the headline '1,200 Killed by Mental Patients'. Apparently they want the nation to believe that people with mental health problems are dangerous. I'd better chain myself to my bed tonight in case I feel the urge to go on a killing spree, because I was feeling a bit depressed this morning.

Dear oh dear! When I saw the headline I wanted to scream and shout, "Are we getting nowhere with mental health awareness?"

Still, 1,200 sounds like quite a large numb...

Introducing the New Trolls in Book 3

Every troll book has at least one new troll. I am pleased to announce that Trolls on Ice has nine! You'll also see the return of some existing, much-loved characters such as Bruno Super-Troll-Knobbly-Foot. The book, which will be the third in my Smelly Troll series, is all about the Winter Trollympics - a sporting event in which trolls from distant lands compete to win events like the troll vault and figure skating.

Trolls On Ice Cover Revealed

"A sledge. I think I want a sledge. But that might not fit in the portrait space. And I want a sense of calamity and danger. So maybe skis. I think I want skis. But then it has to have Brawnulator Powerknees on it and he doesn't ski in the book. I'm just not sure that a sledge is chaotic enough. I really need slippery humour. And can there be a rat. I really want Ralf the Rat on there. And mustn't clash with cyan. Oh! Do you know who else I want on there? Mama Bulbousbum Stenchmistress."

Usual...

The Dexter Finale - A Writer's Perspective (Contains Spoilers)

The final episode of the final season of Dexter has aired, and with it has come a tidal wave of criticism. But is it as bad as its fans and critics say?

A quick recap or spoiler, depending on your viewing habits. The character, Dexter Morgan is a serial killer, having been 'taught' by his foster father and a psychologist to only kill bad people, after his tutors presumed he was a psychopath. The show begins with Dexter stating that if he could have feelings, he'd have feeling for his foster si...
