DAY 86 - Session In Bloom
Welcome my wonderful readers!
As some of you know,. I'm currently living in a foreign country in order to be with my wife. We live in Baguio City, the only tolerable climate in the Philippines, and every year at this time they have a flower festival, with the main street being turned into an avenue of vendors. Sometimes U.S. restaurants from back home come up from Manila, (Dominos, Cinnabon)which is always wonderful to have a taste of home! We'll on our way to check out this years offerings, and will share pics tmrw.
See you tomorrow:)

DAY 85 - Oscar
Welcome my wonderful readers!
Well, this weekend is the Academy Awards, aka Oscars, so I thought I'd share a few of my favorite facts about the long-running ceremony.
Oscar's official name is the Academy Award of Merit. Though the actual story of how the Academy Award of Merit came to be known as the Oscar is unclear, the most popular story has been that Academy librarian - and eventual executive director - Margaret Herrick believed it looked a lot like her Uncle Oscar. After she made that observation, the Academy staff began calling the award 'Oscar.' The Academy didn't officially use the nickname until 1939.
The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. It lasted 15 minutes. A ticket to the show was $5.00.
Most people won’t know who John Cazale is, and with good reason: he’s only been in five films. But all of them have been nominated for Best Picture. Cazale only acted in The Godfather Parts 1 & 2, Dog Day Afternoon, The Conversation and The Deer Hunter; the first three actually won Best Picture (and The Conversation only lost because it went up against…The Godfather Part 2.) Unfortunately, Cazale died soon thereafter of cancer.
And lastly, this is more of an opinion, although in my eyes it remains a fact: The most important Oscar goes to...
The writers! Without them there would be no other winners! Story is king! And I love it when the Academy presents the two categories in this fashion...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJL7H1...
It helps the audience see the fact that it all starts with the screenplay.
See you tomorrow:)
P.S. Wanna see an example of some interesting screenwriting? Pick up a copy of Starving For Genius. Writing scripts is part of the main character's job, and I include a sample of his work in the novella.

DAY 83 - So(m)bering Satistics
Welcome my wonderful readers!
Like any other industry that entertains, becoming a published author by a big publishing house appears to be as likely as winning the lottery. Upon researching the odds, the general number that keeps coming up is between .1% and 1%. Some claim the chances are a bit better if you happen to have a great book, but unfortunately, in reality, this is subjective. It takes talent to spot talent, so a lot of "great" books end up getting passed over, while many average ones end up getting through thanks to the whole know someone who knows someone game.
This is why YOU, the reader, is so important to someone like ME, an indie author. Time slows for no one, so I couldn't wait around and place all my bets on finding a big wig publisher that might see my talent. This doesn't mean I have given up all hope in my literary works lining the shelves of your local bookstores. But in the meantime, I've got to try and let the world know what I have to offer. A pretty tough endeavor when readers are still gravitating towards the rock stars of literature. (Rock stars because they have a huge marketing campaign behind them).
So like The Little Engine That Could, despite the overwhelming odds, I still think I can, think I can succeed. But I need your help. The majority of those who have read my work have great things to say about it, so you don't have to take my word for it. After over 25 years of honing my craft, the proof is indeed in the pudding.
Have some, won't you...?

Welcome my wonderful readers!
Thought I'd give you guys a secret about my novella, Starving For Genius. See the guy on the cover? If you look close you might recognize him...
Yep, it's me, portraying the main character of Xavier Zerylnick. Why? The answers lie within the pages of my autobiography-hee!hee!

Day 81 - People Finder
Welcome my wonderful readers!
Heard about Google's people finder, so I looked it up. Turns out it's for emergency-type searching. Like natural disasters. Was kinda hoping it was something I could use to help find the dad I never knew. Oh well, we'll see in time.

DAY 79 - Face-To-Face With A Beast
Welcome my wonderful readers!
Well, I've got two more weeks until I leave the English Academy I'm currently teaching at to return to full time writing. One of the things I won't miss is the beast of a dog that I pass each day that the owner has stationed just a couple of yards from my classroom! The other dogs on the estate are friendly, and some even run up and greet me, but this particular dog I'm speaking of is a monster. Every day without fail he spins on the end of his chain like a Tasmanian devil, just wishin' he could sink those fangs of his into me!
Well, yesterday I had no choice but to be face-to-face with him...!
Right now I'm privately tutoring two different students. As the second hour wrapped my pupil and I were gathering our things to leave when we noticed the beast right outside the classroom door. He had somehow got off his chain! None of the groundskeepers were around, so we were kinda stuck.
I decided to take a chance and head to the bathroom. You see, the classroom is in the garage, and if you go further in there's the bathroom. So I armed myself with an uncapped ballpoint pen and headed for it, making sure not to make eye contact as I tested the waters.
Cujo just stood there, unsure of what to do.
When I left the bathroom and returned to the class I let my student know that I thought it would be ok for us to leave, as long as we acted 'natural', didn't make any sudden movements, and didn't make eye contact. Still had the pen in my hand, hoping that the ol' Ninja training wouldn't let me down if I needed to conjure it back up.
Leaving the garage, the beast was now in front of us, and as we stood still he smelt me. Recall any number of horror movies where a monster beast has someone at bay and you'll understand how we felt! (This dog had bitten one of my other students a couple of months back, so we knew there was danger)
Slowly, I led us away. Once clear, I headed upstairs to let the owner know that his beast was loose.
Close call!
See you tomorrow:)

Day 77 - V.I.P.
Welcome my wonderful readers!
Sometimes I think that if I weren't a Visually-Impaired Person I'd be super human. I'd get so much more done. Imagine taking away the entire sight of your left eye and impairing your right eye to the point to where you couldn't see anything beyond a foot. That's my world, and yeah, it sucks. But I'm a doer, so I just keep soldiering on. But I'm not gonna lie, waking up each day wondering how much longer my remaining sight is going to last is a very scary thing to go through. I do find comfort in knowing I could still write if the worse were to happen, although I'd have to train myself to use the keyboard without looking at it. (I'm a traditionalist. Love using pen and paper).
