Hi Claire! Another baking fan here, but I can't crochet! Or knit, for that matter :)

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I got a free book about kumihino a while ago, & I'm keeping my eyes open for more books on that, - I've just started a flat braid for the first time, & it is quite easy.

message 560: by [deleted user] (new)

What is kumihino?

:0)

message 561: by Jay-me (Janet) (new)

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments It is braiding - a bit like french knitting I suppose.
These were some of the the round braids I made,

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I think I should be in the grumpy thread as I've just put the back of a very large aran jumper on a stitch holder and noticed a wrong crossover on a cable about 10" up. I just can't ignore it as I shall see the mistake everytime I see him wear it. All pulled undone now and I've given myself a telling off for not concentrating! Can anyone else live with an obvious mistake?

I hate it when something like that happens! I can't live with things when I notice them and have to unpick, sometimes it's hours of work I have to unpick - so annoying!

The braiding looks lovely, Janet!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Just been watching BBC2's 'Winterwatch' - amazing crochet animals!!! Apparently she made some mega sized beasts for the Olympics (I think) - took her 2 years! Bit of a problem with repetitive strain injury tho.

message 565: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll have to try and catch that on the iplayer!

The crocheted hare was on the 'Unsprung' bit of Winterwatch, BTW. Impressive.

Ah, I see how it works - and presumably you follow a chart for each pattern which gives you the letters of the alphabet in a sequence? Clever!

Saw the one at Saltburn Library. Brilliant.

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Love the braiding Janet. What kind of yarn do you use?

Re mistakes Lynne: I read that Victorian girls used to make an error intentionally in their samplers as only God was allowed perfection. Although I am not terribly religious I now use the same excuse myself! Some mistakes I allow myself but if glaringly obvious I just have to redo.

Those braids are all done with rattail, I have used waxed cord and embroidery thread too.

message 576: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments I love the braiding too, never seen that before. Really lovely. (think I might have to add that to this year's Want to Have a Go at list) Is there a craft equivalent of the TBR pile??

message 577: by Nicola (new)

Nicola Palmer | 255 comments Lovely braiding - looks complicated! Reminds me of that plaited loaf I wanted to attempt from the Great British Bake Off, but still haven't!

I haven't asked them, but they do make lovely silky threads and plenty of colours too.

I finally got round to reading the Quilting one, it's the Quilters Pin introduction to using pinterest. It's not free now tho, but it is a useful little book. Don't think I'd pay three quid for it however. Still not actually got as far as signing up with pinterest but I know a lot of scrapbookers find it useful.

message 589: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Did an art class yesterday on acrylic abstract painting. We did a Mondrian style, a texturey one, and a 'Rothko'. Am now inspired to have a go at redoing them in fabrics - the Mondrian wd make a great scrapbook cover (white background, black lines, small blocks of pure colour).

message 590: by [deleted user] (new)

I joined pinterest and have found it fantastic for bookmarking free crochet patterns that I find online. Before I would bookmark them normally, then have lists to look through, wondering what they were - with pinterest it's fantastic because I can search through the photos of the patterns and choose the one that I want more easily. I can also organise them into types, ideas for designs etc. I love it!

:0)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I use Pinterest for fashion inspiration - beauty & make-up too.

I did originally use it for recipes but I've found that they are mostly indulgent and no real use in the long run. You do find the odd one too.

I was emailed about this from a crochet mailing list - I haven't had my usual free kindle book emails yet, if anymore craft ones come in, I'll highlight them later..

It'd make a lovely cushion cover too, I reckon. Really enjoyed making it, it was quite quick.
