Leslie (msleslie2031) Hi all - My name is Leslie, I am a recently retired public health researcher amongst other things; a Bay Area woman living in Sydney, Australia for the past few decades.

My current obsessions are Constantinople/Istanbul, the Ottoman Empire, and the 1919 Paris Peace Conference that worked out the treaties ending WW1, but past obsessions have included Imperial Rome, the American Civil War, 16th century Britain, the settling of Australia, and Herodotus. I listen and relisten to a lot of long audiobooks and lecture series, but also read hardcopy and kindle books, as well.

I look forward to learning about history with you!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) You sound like a true history buff, Leslie, and we are glad to welcome you to the place for all things history. I do love Australia so!!!! Since you are particularly interested in the Ottoman Empire, I am going to suggest a couple of folders that contain topics about that subject.

Ancient History
World War I

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Richard Watson | 1 comments Hi, I'm Richard, currently living in Yorkshire, in the UK.

I've always been interested in Ancient Greece and Rome, especially their literature. More recently, I'm interested in the Late Medieval to Stuart period in Britain (including both 'civil war' events) and the Cold War. I've also started to be interested in the American Civil War and the Napoleonic Wars.

But my big interest is in World War II (me and countless others, right?), and the period of mostly European history between 1918 and 1950 or so. Sometimes it's more about (geo)politics for me, sometimes it's the military history and sometimes it's more specific things, like the Holocaust.

Plus, there's a book on my Kindle giving a rundown of Chinese history, which I'm hoping will broaden my geographical history horizons a bit.

Katrina Shawver (katrinashawver) | 6 comments Greetings! My name is Katrina Shawver from Phoenix Arizona. History fascinates me. I read nonfiction more than fiction, but am also drawn to a good mystery that keeps me turning the pages. I'm particularly drawn to stories about a time and place of any era I don't know much about and can learn something new. I have a strong interest In Poland and vicinity in the 1930's and 1940's (WWII) as I had a friend who spent three years in concentration camps as a Catholic.

Jim Collett | 0 comments Hi, I'm Jim. I live in the United States, specifically West Texas. I am a semi-retired educator who spent much of his time teaching American History to high school students. I also have a master's degree in History. I enjoy reading a broad range of history books, including the American Civil War, the American West, military history across a broad span of time, and ancient history. I also consider myself an amateur archaeologist and read quite a bit in that area, which sometimes overlaps with history.

Hannah (writeyourownstory) | 1 comments Hi! My name is Hannah Jones, and I am a recent college graduate--History major with a minor in 7-12 education. I absolutely love thr subject of history. It was always my favorite in school, and my father and I would bond over old war movies and documentaries on the history channel (when it actually showed "history") when I was younger. My favorite areas of history are narrowed down to medieval history (especially in historical fiction) and military history (WWII being my favorite), with a bit of random areas thrown in (Pompeii, the Titanic, early 20th century film industry, the Tudors, the Dust Bowl, etc.). I am currently getting my masters in history and am very excited about having the opportunity to do so. Thank you for letting me join your group and I hope to meet others with a passion for history such as mine!

Kate (historymaven) | 4 comments Hi - My name is Kate Stout. I'm in my 50s, and have always loved history. When I was 12, trusting that librarians know everything, I asked the children's librarian the name of the swordsman who cut off Anne Boleyn's head. This led to me being given access to the ADULT part of the library, and the untold wonders of the history and biography sections. I've been pretty happy ever since!

My original interests were in medieval and Tudor history, but are now fairly omnivorous - Most of Europe, Russia, Rome and Egypt, China, Japan, and American history.

Some of my favorite authors are Robert Massie, David McCullough, Barbara Tuchman, and Daniel Hackett Fischer. I find social history interwoven with events particularly interesting. I just finished Albion's Seed, and found it stunningly wonderful.

Looking forward to hanging out with a lot of people who love history.

Hi guys! I'm Sheetal (pronounced a bit like beetle)an NYC transplant now living (for a few more years) in Bombay.

I'm excited to be here, I have always been a bit of a history buff, but my passion is WW2 history, (particularly on the Eastern front) and culling any tidbits on Bombay circa 1920's. Both my maternal grandparents were in the medical field that also has fostered great interest in the medical history of the Bombay Plague outbreak, (though this took place much earlier than my grandfather (doctor) and grandmother (nurse) were practicing, or even born.

Looking forward to jumping right in!

I am a bookhaolic since I have memory, I do not like only a single genere, I read everything I can get (I am more historical atm). I love not only to read but also the books itself, I love getting lost in the old markets to find "old" books who bring with them a story.. books are an important part of my life, my escape from reality ... unfortunately, I think that readers often do not have the fortune to find other people as passionate as them, so I think that GR is a very good way to get in touch with other fools like us :D as well as being very useful to get an idea of the various possible readings!

I said that, I hope to meet many other passionate readers and... I wish you good night !!

Leslie | 49 comments Hello everyone! My name is Leslie and I'm a huge book lover. I'm currently in 6 local groups and a few on-line. I will likely not be able to read with you every time, but will pop in as time allows. Currently, I'm busy getting in all of my work-related reading so the fun stuff is on hold for the rest of the month. Will be with you soon! Wish I could have picked up Cleopatra with you! That looked interesting. I'm currently reading a book called The Founding of Christendom by Warren H Carroll and highly recommend it. Just finished reading The First Thousand Years of Christianity by Robert Wilken (also great).

The Bamboo Traveler | 2 comments Hello! My name is Julie. I love reading. I'll read anything, but I think history is one of my favorites. My BA was in history, specializing in Russian history. However, that was over 25 years ago, and since then, I have read more about the history of China. I like to travel to foreign countries, and before I go some place, I will read a lot about the place, mainly the history of the place. In recent years, I've become familiar with the histories of Peru and Cambodia. I currently live in California, but I have also lived in the Pacific Northwest, the South, and the Midwest in addition to China, South Korea, and Austria.

Leslie | 49 comments Am I reading the site correctly that (under Current Reading) there is one active book and a new one planned for November? It seems like there are tons of subsets within this category. Where's the truly active list? Some of the Current Reading seem to have already been finished, right?

We are having a readathon tomorrow August 22nd. Maybe you would like to sign up for that. We are updating list of books as we have always been doing since 2008 and we are all volunteers who have busy lives.

There are three challenges going on right now - Readathons, Japan, and India.

We will be updating the yearlong Politics selection, adding additional buddy reads to the already extensive list already available that folks can join in on at any time.

So there is a lot out there - and as we update and schedule there will be even more.

Welcome to the group Leslie and if you want to join in on the Cleopatra discussion - our discussion threads are always open and you can post at any time even if we have concluded the discussion timeline.

Greetings and welcome to the group, Mitch. I too am a big fan of ancient Rome - ancient sources, non-fiction and fiction, particularly mysteries, of which there are a lot of good ones.
