Elle | 1 comments Hello. My name is Elle. I pretty much enjoy all of history; it makes a great story in itself. I enjoy reading historical fiction. I also like learning about the myths, legends, and religions of different cultures. I joined the group to meet other members interested in history and for book recommendations. I look forward to being a part of the group.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Hello and welcome, Elle. There is much to see and do here and a wonderful place to find great book recommendations. Let me get you started with something that might be of interest to you.

History of Religion

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

I am a freshly retired law enforcement officer with a lifelong love of all things related to books, especially history and biography. Pia Hello everyone!

My name's Andrea, a student living in Finland. I'm delighted to have found this group as I'm very passionate about history, among other subjects such as; science, politics, philosophy, psychology etc. Some of my main interests in history are; the ancient times, the Europe and the Middle East, history of women, history of science and scientists. Just to name few of them. Hopefully I'll find several fascinating history books while being part of this group, and expanding my knowledge of the areas I like.

Morgan Read-Davidson | 1 comments Hello, I'm Morgan, a professor of Rhetoric and Writing at Chapman University in Orange, CA (USA). I've always been fascinated with history and love to read various attempts at recreating the past, particularly Dark and Iron Ages, where little written evidence has survived. I used to be quite uptight about historical "accuracy," but I've since mellowed out, realizing that storytelling is universal tool of understanding our human condition. So I look for unique and interesting stories above all else.

I'm currently reading Gary Jennings' RAPTOR, a fascinating tale told by a hermaphrodite Goth in time of King Theodoric.

Mohamed Hello! I'm Mohamed, a medical student in Bahrain. I've always adored history for as long as I can remember. Coming from a region that's in the news most of the time, I've been interested in Middle Eastern history (and Bahrain history too!), European history, 20th century history and history in general (I'm indecisive when I have to choose specific parts). I blog occasionally on history.

I'm keen on finding out what wonderful books you guys recommend and just observe some good reviews here and there. Right now, I'm reading Napoleon: Man of War, Man of Peace by Timothy Wilson-Smith.

Lark Benobi (larkbenobi) Hi, I'm poingu. I'm doing a lot of re-thinking of history and of historical methods lately, which has led to some interesting reads. I'm a U.S. citizen and I grew up with a lot of Manifest Destiny kinds of messages in my grade school history classes. That message was dying out at the time, though, and evolved into Howard Zinn/history of the oppressed kinds of classes in high school and college.

In the last 20 years or so, though, especially with the advent of Atlantic History as a concept, it seems that historians are going back to first principles about historical research, and are trying to re-envision modern history to be a far more encompassing look at human interactions than either of these earlier approaches to the same stories. I'd like to learn more.

I've focused my reading on U.S. history/history of slavery, because that's where I feel the most need to revise earlier thinking and teaching. Some of the books I've really gained a lot from reading include these:

The Half Has Never Been Told Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism by Edward E. Baptist The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism by Edward E. Baptist

The Problem of Slavery in the Age of Emancipation by David Brion Davis The Problem of Slavery in the Age of Emancipation by David Brion Davis David Brion Davis

Race and Reunion The Civil War in American Memory by David W. Blight Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory by David Blight

This Republic of Suffering Death and the American Civil War by Drew Gilpin Faust This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War by Drew Gilpin Faust

and, on another topic entirely:

After The Party A Personal And Political Journey Inside The Anc by Andrew Feinstein After the Party by Andrew Feinstein Andrew Feinstein, a first-hand account of early years in South African politics following the rise of the ANC

message 5888: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1 comments Hello, my name is Barb and I'm from Chicago, Illinois (USA). I'm primarily a fan of science fiction and historical nonfiction. I enjoy reading about many times/places/events, though if I had to pick an area I go back to regularly, that would be early United States political history. The parallels to today are endless!

I'm in fundraising at the University of Chicago, so my job has very little to do with history. I do love working in universities, since I get to meet incredibly interesting people and have a chance to learn a tiny bit about everything through free lectures and events. Since I have this thirst for knowledge as a non-academic, I tend to choose an area of history that I feel I know very little about and find an appropriate book.

I'm always open to suggestions for books you think are well written and as balanced as possible, from any area of history. If it's on Audible, even better- I listen to a lot of my books. Looking forward to interacting with this site and all of you!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) We are glad you chose to join us, Gokulakrishnan. If you love history, you have come to the right place. Here is a link to one of your favorite topics.

Current Events and Politics

Thomas Jefferson The Art of Power by Jon Meacham by Jon Meacham Jon Meacham

Joshua (brotherbooks) | 1 comments Good day fellow History lovers! My name is Joshua and I look forward to being an active member of the group. I love History in all it's various forms, joining this group to find individuals that share the same passion. It is my hope that with said interactions between myself and the community, we may all benefit with continually improving insight and expanded perspective. I am currently reading "The Transformation of the World: A Global History of the 19th Century" by Jurgen Osterhammel. Osterhammel's Magnus Opus is an extremely nuanced book thus far and I highly recommend it. And please by all means recommend books in the same vein, I love vast history tomes with an abundance of minutia. The Transformation of the World: A Global History of the Nineteenth Century

Pakeeza | 1 comments Hey fellas, its Pakeeza here and I wanna be a part of this group because firstly the group really seems to be helpful and I don't know why but I have been always intrigued by the history. Moreover, I like the company of people who could reveal me more about the history regardless of their ages. My interest has been piqued much lately and finally I have decided to lay my hands on books for it because all I have read uptil now is just from Shakespears, Austen, Dickens or related stuff.

Vikram Prasad (vikramprasad) Hello everyone,
This is Vikram from India. Working in a corporate role with one of MNC's here. I loved reading in my school days but it somehow faltered in college and early employment days. Now I am trying to get back my mojo. Due to change in perspective over last 3-4 yrs, History is now of one of may favorite topics while picking up a book. History interests me because it enables me to develop a perspective on the background behind things happening currently in the world and also points directional views for the future. It helps understand the world better. Have read some history books and not restricted to only political or civil history but also related to finance, science, industry etc. Hoping this book club would provide valuable insights and suggestions and also contribute myself for benefit of the others
