Leah Markum | 7 comments Hi, I'm Leah. There are a lot of history buffs in my family, so even though I'm more of a science nerd I never neglect to learn more and respect history. Lately I've been combining my interests by reading the history of scientific developments and exploration. However, I also love learning history by location such as the American West (grew up in British Columbia, Colorado and Oklahoma), Central and East Asia, and micro history topics.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) So glad that you joined us, Leah, It is nice to see someone say that they "respect" history, as we all should do.....and that is why we are here. To learn more and share our knowledge of all things history. Here is a topic you might enjoy.

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Betsy - just go to Amazon for example and look at the table of contents for a hardcopy version of the book you are reading - and you should be able to figure out an approximate page number which matches the Kindle chapter you are reading. It is not an exact science.

I am told that for some kindles if you hit menu and look at the progress bar...it should have page numbers showing. I am not sure if your Kindle version has that feature. I have also been told that page numbers are not enabled for all books. So you may have to use my technique of going to a hardcopy version on Amazon - peeking inside and looking at the table of contents pages related to the chapters themselves.

Another person on Amazon figured it out this way: (the following is what they said)

a. I figured it out but its time consuming -
1 find the actual amount of pages in the book you are reading
2 find the total number of pages in the book on your kindle
3 divide the number of pages on the kindle and the number of pages in the real book
4 find the page number that you are on your kindle. And divide it by the answer from #3

On Amazon there is an entire thread dedicated to that discussion:

http://www.amazon.com/view-page-numbe...

This is not something for this thread - but in the future we also have a Help Desk Folder and this would fit in nicely there.

My name is Dave, I'm from Fairbanks, Alaska. I'm a recently retired engineering manager. I enjoy reading, mostly nonfiction and within that category, world history. I particularly like naval history and try to read Alaskan history, but I like most anything good. I joined to gain exposure to a lot of other ideas and recommendations for quality history books. I've ready my share of poorly written books and want to minimize wasted time on more of them - there is so much high quality writing out there. Thanks!

Blood Diamonds: Tracing the Deadly Path of the World's Most Precious Stones by Greg Campbell

Just Business: Multinational Corporations and Human Rights by John Ruggie

In my spare time, I'm a huge fan of books on historical topics (hence my subscription to this group), especially on politics. One of my most recent discoveries is
The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History by Boris Johnson. I've been a fan of literature on the British Bulldog, but this one made me feel just as intrigued as the first time that I read a book about Churchill. Presumably because Boris Johnson is a Winston-addict such as myself.

Looking forward to more tips on where to find the same appeal in historical literature!

Fausto Betances Hello everybody!

My name is Fausto. I'm originally from the Dominican Republic currently living in Miami. I work as a project manager for a high tech company (Big Data applications/Software).

The vast majority of books I read are non-fiction with a heavy dose of world history. My interest in history came from the need to discover accurate stories of my personal heroes. It was a big wakening when, in my teenage, I discovered that there was substantial documentation on every subject of interest to me. I stopped asking question and started reading. :)

As for this group, I think it will bring focus to my passion for history books. My objective is to read other members views and reviews on the books they read and share my own.

I hope to be a good member and look forward to sharing ideas and opinions with other readers.

Tom D | 1 comments Hello. My name is Tom Donegan and I currently reside in Chandler, AZ. I work as a law enforcement officer and in my spare time I like to read, read, and read some more. My favorite books are history. As far as my favorite subject in history, it's hard to say because I constantly go through the different phases. For the past few months it's been WWII, specifically memoirs of ordinary soldiers on both sides. I'm a big fan of American history in general but last year I also went through an ancient history and then a European history phase. I'm glad I found this book club because it's usually not too often that I have the chance to discuss these topics with friends and family. I find a lot of people generally regard history favorably but their interest tends to be superficial. I look forward to participating in this group!
